Time to steal your mind

Posted by Isaac Childres (Creator)

Well, the BGG admins took the wind out of my sails a bit and put up the Mindthief player mat a little earlier than I expected, but in case you haven't seen it:

Now if you really like it, go give it a thumb on BGG. Then give a thumb to all the other images.

If you want.

The Mindthief needs some more development time, but I'm really excited about the idea. You may notice that she has very few hit points, but she is also very focused on melee powers. Most of her ranged attacks will be very low damage status effects. To be effective, she'll have to get into melee and mix it up, but how will she survive?

The dynamics of the class revolve around psychic enhancements to her weapons - persistent bonuses she plays that will give advantages when she performs a melee attack.

So, like, when one card is active, she may get Shield 1 for the round when she attacks. When another is active, she may heal every time she attacks. Or she could just go full glass cannon and get bonus attack power. But only one card can be active at a time.

So I hope that sounds cool to you. I'll certainly be updating you on the development of the class as we move forward past the Kickstarter.

Map tiles!

I know there's been a lot of clamoring to see more map tiles. Josh has been working hard on this, and I just wanted to show you a couple tiles he sent me last night. Hopefully these will give you a better idea of what you'll see in the box.

Josh may have already shared these on BGG and they should be popping up in the images. And he's not done! He should have more for us before the end of the campaign, but I hope these images allay your fears.

More stretch goals?

Never fear! As I said before, more stretch goals are in the works. I will get them updated as soon as I can.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention there are two more Gloomhaven-related podcasts to devour, if you're into that sort of thing.

The first is part two of Paul Grogan's interview with me for Gaming Rules! I answer some hard-hitting listener questions, so check it out.

The second is a podcast called Maker's Paradise, which is sort of focused on giving advice to crowdfunders, but I think it is definitely worth a listen, as well.

All right, now get back to being awesome!

Yeah I never heard of that either.

Oh, wow, I never knew the GeekMod system existed. This is fascinating.

For the record, BGG images are approved by the "GeekMod" system, not the admins. Any BGG members can go into GeekMod and, hopefully by consulting the guidelines, vote to accept or reject images in order they appear in the queue. (They are rewarded with tiny bits of GeekGold.)

So if it's a low image day, or if a lot of BGG users are helping out in GeekMod, images can get through the queue pretty quickly. Whereas if eight people just tried to upload decades of photos of painted minis or the minute-by-minute documentation of their weekend-long wargame... it can take somewhat longer.

I would be awesome when the Mindthief has one or more Cards to control enemies fpr one turn. Maybe one Card for normal monsters at lower Leven and when you Level up a Card for Elite MOnsters. That were my first thoughts when I read Mindthief.

Tiles look very nice. The triangle in the middle of the latter may be a little out of place/unnecessary.

The Mindthief looks awesome, but the 'brain'-symbol on the backside feels a bit misplaced. The map tile with the stone floor looks a bit too clean, I think that some drops of blood or some dirt'n'grime would suit it very well.

@Bobby Allen: The map tiles will be interlocking. I just didn't add that part on to them for these examples.

You're playing with weird people Dominc if they won't play a character due to their sex.

Anyways, this kinda race seems rather difficult for us humans to determine the gender of. Just call it an 'it' at your table.

    9. Bobby Allen

Map tiles need to be like a jigsaw puzzle, (DOA II spoiled me). A means of locking the pieces together into a solid map. Many games of Catan have been interrupted because the map was tussled.

      @Dominic - That's... kinda sad.

My favorite class! Great Lore. But why do you call it a she? It looks like a he! I hope it's a he! The reality is that all of my female characters in my games are left virutaly untouched. Let's make this cool one a he so HE can see playtime.

Back when I demanded on BGG you should give us a Vermling hero I would have never even expected to have one in the final game. Great sutff! The idea and lore for the Mindthief sounds pretty cool.

    13. Rogue Process

Mindthief sounds cool, interested in how the activation/deactivation of abilities works - do all played cards remain in the active array and get marked/flipped to show which is active?

      Love the road tile!

*opens box, looks at card, sees elongated brain/thought bubble* ... PERFECT. \(^0^)/

It's like a fig leaf. I might just be doing you all a favor. Some things you can't unsee.

    16. Isaac Childres 4-time creator on

Yes, we'll be resizing/rearranging things to address that...issue.

    17. Joseph T. on

Okay, I'll be the one to say it, that MIND/BRAIN/THOUGHT BUBBLE icon has to be relocated a little bit or changed because... uhm... yeah...
