Now capable of ending friendships

Hello residents of Gloomhaven!

As if these mercenaries didn't have enough trouble with all their selfishness and hidden agendas, now open fighting has broken out in the streets! I guess we'll need to build an arena so the local vendors don't get caught in the cross fire.

That's right, another stretch goal has been cleared and I hope at least some of you are excited about it. Gloomhaven will always be first and foremost a cooperative game, and everyone who is here solely for that type of play is of course most welcome, but there's nothing wrong with a little competition every once in a while, right? No one's getting killed or anything. Just, you know, beat down and exhausted.

In case you can't tell, I'm excited about Versus Mode.

The next stretch goal

But what's that on the horizon? Another stretch goal? Upgraded elemental tokens? That sounds cool.

For those of you who haven't plumbed the depths of the rule book, elements are used as sort of a combo system. Certain abilities will create elemental infusions, moving the corresponding element token to the strong side of the element chart.

Fire orbs create fire, as notated by the fire symbol on the card.
Fire orbs create fire, as notated by the fire symbol on the card.

At the end of every round, these elements will wane, moving one column to the left.

Fire and light both decrease at the end of the round, moving to waning and inert respectively.
Fire and light both decrease at the end of the round, moving to waning and inert respectively.

While an element is in the waning or strong column, though, other actions can be used to consume that element to augment the abilities on the card. When an element is consumed, it goes back down to inert.

Flame strike consumes the fire to ignite the enemy in addition to doing damage.
Flame strike consumes the fire to ignite the enemy in addition to doing damage.

So all of this is tracked by these 6 tokens on the cardboard chart. Currently these 6 tokens are just cardboard chits, but when we hit that next stretch goal, we'll upgrade them to thicker wooden tokens with the icons screen printed on both sides. I think this will make them feel a little more important when you're moving around, and that's good because these tokens become very important when you start getting into the more complicated character abilities and also run into enemies who can manipulate the element track as well. It doesn't matter who created the elemental infusion - anyone can use it once it's out there.

More stretch goals

Then we've also got more fan-made scenarios coming up after that. I've been pretty impressed with the submissions so far, but I know that's not all you have in you. Plus, the earlier you get your submission in, the more feedback you'll get from me, the judge. Every Sunday (i.e. tomorrow), I'll look through all the submissions and message each creator with some feedback on how it could be improved, thus increasing your chances of actually getting into the game.

And of course the next stretch goal will also double your chances of making it in!

And then we've got a new character! This one isn't a starting character, but it is very, very cool. I can't really say much more than that outside of spoiler space.

Helping out

A little bit of chatter has been popping up about how the campaign has been slowing down, which is understandable, but it is still nothing to be sad about. Our momentum has carried us very far, and we've still got 17 days left to keep things moving. If you want to help out, you can continue to keep our visibility high on Board Game Geek by participating in conversations and thumbing images.

You can also spread the Gloomhaven love to other parts of the internet by sharing it on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, whatever you are comfortable with. You know the game is awesome, so now it's time to give other people the chance to discover it and realize how awesome it is too.

We've got plenty more stretch goals to get through, so let's keep this train rolling!

Yeah, wooden discs with the icons on them sounds nice, I like it.

There seems to be enough tokens in the game, that having a few of the important ones stand out will be nice.

The upgrade for the Elemental Tokens is a great stretch goal! Cool idea! And seems unlocking this will be soon reality.
Also wooden tokens are great and seem to fit into the fantasy atmosphere of the game quite nice.
Thanks for keepng us posted and those updates, Isaac. They always make me happy :)

On an unrelated topic, have you thought about a laminated map with reusable vinyl stickers? That or something similar seems like it would let you alter the world, but also undo errors and appease those who don't want to permanently change their copy of the game.

@Justin - While I do loves me some acrylic, do you think it would fit with that aesthetic of the rest of the game? Also, IIRC they tend to be a *lot* more expensive to produce than wood..

I think it would be cool to have another human character class...the only one I see at the moment is the scoundrel, which is cool, but maybe having something like a human paladin, who can heal and fight really well, would be a super cool new character...what do you think?

We see wooden token so often, wouldn't it be cool to go with a laser cut acrylic? A was thinking something like: http://www.dp9.com/content/new-acrylic-token-packs-preview or http://www.artofwarstudios.co.uk/category-s/107.htm

Where's the bad in a way to play-test your build ideas and try out new progression paths in a quick match in the arena? Nowhere. It's nowhere.

Because this is awesome~ :P I'm super happy we have this one, I'm gonna have a ton of fun messing about with options in this!

Plus, like I said before, it's a good way to come up with a wide variety of interesting but usable pre-made characters for new, clueless-but-interested people and groups to get the ball rolling faster~ nOn

You could keep a pack of pre-made characters on you to show off should the opportunity arise :P
