Concerning the wanton destruction of stretch goals

Posted by Isaac Childres (Creator)

Man, every day I sit down to write an update, and every day you all have demolished yet another stretch goal. You are like machines. Unstoppable wrecking machines.

But seriously, you guys are champs. We've got handy dandy monster stat envelopes now, so keep up the good work.  Keep spreading the word and being generous with your thumbs, and we will triumph over all the stretch goals.

New character class

Oh, hey, so let's talk about the new character class coming in at $150k.

I'm going to be honest with you: I wasn't planning on releasing a new starting class for the game. All the classes that I was excited about unlocking with stretch goals - that I had commissioned art for and started designing ability decks for - they were all more advanced classes - classes that I don't think would work very well to start out the game with.

Sure, in the back of my mind, I was like, "Man, I should really design another starting class to add a little variety," but then I never actually did.

But worry not! The backers have spoken, and they are very eager to get a new starting class, so that is what were are going to do! I won't have any cool art for you for a while, and I'm still working on an ability deck, but I think I'm headed in a pretty cool direction. The whole thing is gonna be great.

GREAT I tell you! I think you will all be happy, and I will reveal more about the class when we unlock it.

What? You want to know more now? Okay, fine, I'll give you the name of the class at least: the Savvas Cragheart. I'll leave you to speculate amongst yourselves about what that means.

      Ravendas: exactly.

Bill, while the game will be balanced for 4 players, house ruling a 5 player scheme whereby you use +1 level to each enemy you face may work. The balance won't be perfect but might be serviceable.

Playtesting time concerns aside (and I have those too) I'd actually like to see at least 6 starting classes. I will be playing Gloomhaven with 4 players, and as someone else pointed out, it would be nice if all players felt like they had a choice in what class they started with.

Bill: One would think. It's built to have different setups for 2p-4p (with 1p using 2p's values).

I'm glad there's a new starting class. If there's 4 classes in a 4p game, that means the first person gets 4 choices, the second person gets 3 choices, the third person gets 2 choices and the last person gets no choice, just whatever's left.

A 5th class lets everyone have a choice in what to play, and not be 'forced' into one just because there's no other choices.

A 5th starting class does NOT mean it's 5p though.

Will it break the game if we play 5P?

Yes, there is time to adequately play test a new class. Worry not!

Oh this makes me so happy.
Thnx Isaac for listening to our requests.

But I also suggesting another starting char - so that you can offer more characters to a larger group and you dont need to use the same char twice.

What I am now hoping for is a Vermling Shaman class :) which got banned from his tribe! :)

+ 1 to what TOM said, new stuff is great but if its not as refined as the rest it will stand out , not only that but this is already such an ambitious project and i can see this and any other "unplanned" stretch goals just delaying the project even more

Stay with 4p if balance is good. The 4 peeps can select from 5 starters, which is good as well.

Just by breaking down "Cragheart" into it's two parts, it could be some kind of earth elementalist mage...

    13. Josh N. on

Savvas guess is a melee battlemage

    14. Nakano

Excited for a new starter class to choose from. Thanks for listening!

I hate to be a downer but is there time to adequately play test a new class?

There are always more stretch goals.

With 22 days still to go. You very well may need several more SGs. :)
