About this project
Did you miss the Kickstarter?
No problem! For a limited time, you can still pre-order the game. Just click on the "Pre-Order" button above!
Building a city is no easy task. You would think so many races working to toward a common goal might make things easier, but everyone is just out for themselves, and too many dissonant voices cause only chaos.
Still, building the legendary city of Gloomhaven is the task before you. Can your race use the resources of your opponents effectively enough to hold the most prestige when the city is complete? Can you leverage your influence and construct the building projects that will benefit your race the most?
Founders of Gloomhaven is a competitive 2 hour city building game for 1-4 players. It is not an expansion to Gloomhaven, but a stand-alone Euro project that features a unique mix of tile placement, action selection, hand management, worker placement, and blind bidding.
All 18 stretch goals are included in all copies of the game!
In Founders of Gloomhaven, you will have control of a number of resources that you can place on the board as tiles.
You must combine your own resource tiles with those of your opponents to create more advanced resource tiles, and then deliver these resources to prestige buildings to earn points.
This is all accomplished through your decks of action cards. On your turn, you can play a card to take a variety of actions:
- Trade: Placing resource tiles or buying access to others' resources.
- Recruit: Hiring adviser cards to add to your deck, giving you more influence and extra powerful actions.
- Upgrade: Building advanced resources to increase your income and scoring opportunities.
- Construct: Erecting personal buildings like houses and bridges, which will give you more control over the board state.
You can also call a vote, which will retrieve all the cards you have played, but doing so will allow all other players to collect income, and then it will trigger a blind vote on which new prestige building gets placed on the board and where it gets placed.
Prestige buildings offer the major scoring opportunities in the game, so you would do well to control the vote whenever possible by spending influence, making sure the building which scores the resources you control is built.
Interested in trying it out? No problem! One of my main Kickstarter goals is to give everyone the chance to really get in there and play the game before they back the project.
There are two main ways you can sit down and give the game a test drive.
Alternately, you can download the print-and-play files to construct your own physical copy of the game. Currently we just have a high-ink version, but there will be a more printer-friendly version very shortly.
High-Ink: [Double-sided 11x17 cardstock (2 pages)], [Single-sided 11x17 cardstock (8 pages)], [Map board]. (There are two copies of each tile so you can tape/glue them together to give the cardstock more weight and avoid any bleed issues.)
Low-ink: [Full file - includes map] (Print it all single-sided, then tape/glue together the front and back of each tile.)
Keep in mind that in all these versions, the art and design is not final and is subject to change.
Or if you just want to watch someone else play the game, we have you well-covered there, too.

New to Kickstarter? No problem! The number people pledging to Kickstarter board game projects seems to be getting larger all the time, and we are happy to have you on board.
Becoming a backer is very simple. Just follow these steps:
- Step 1: Look through the banner at the top right of this page and click on the reward level you'd like to receive.
- Step 2: Choose the correct shipping location and the pledge amount should automatically adjust to the correct value. This step is important!
- Step 3: Click the green "Continue" button and then finish filling out your information on the subsequent page.
- Step 4: Click "Pledge" and you're done! Welcome to the city!
$10 for shipping is included in the base price, which means there is no extra shipping charge for the US, Canada or China. All additional shipping fees for other countries are added automatically when you pledge.
In addition, the game will be fulfilled from distribution centers in the US, Canada, the EU, Australia, Singapore, and China, so there will be no customs fees for backers in these regions.
Also note you can pledge for additional copies of the game by manually increasing your pledge amount, and you only have to pay the extra shipping fee for every three copies of the game. And don't worry if you can't do the math - the pledge manager will sort you out after the project ends.
I am no stranger to slaying rats, destroying skeletons, and defacing board game components to honor and commemorate my wonderful Kickstarter supporters. This time around, however, instead of destroying things, I want to build.
For anyone who pledges a single dollar to the campaign, I will toil away in a variety of city-building video games and erect a grand structure in your name. This will be caught on camera, of course, for you to marvel at and cherish for years to come. You can watch the videos linked above to get a feel for what this will look like.
The main reward level will get you a copy of Founders of Gloomhaven, plain and simple, with no further effort required. All stretch goals are included.
There will be no add-ons, no Kickstarter exclusives, just the game delivered to your doorstep before it comes out in retail, at a significant discount off the expected retail price ($60-$70, depending on stretch goals).
Not only that, but pledging to the Kickstarter gives you a chance to watch and interact with the game as it develops. You will get weekly updates on the progress and development of the game.
I love bringing games to Kickstarter because it gives me a chance to collaborate with this community, taking suggestions from the game's fans and using them to make the game better.
Founders of Gloomhaven has been in development for over a year, and I am really excited to get it out into the world. As with all my designs, I believe it offers something unique and innovative to this great hobby, adding an incredibly high level of player interaction to the city-building genre and melding many disparate mechanics into a cohesive and engaging design.
Once you have played it, I hope you will feel the same way.
Isaac is the driving force behind Cephalofair Games. His first game, Forge War, was published three years ago, and his second game, Gloomhaven, was released to much acclaim back in February. Isaac designed and developed these games and is basically a one-man publishing army. He writes a blog about board game publishing, design and whatever else he is thinking about at www.cephalofair.com. Isaac graduated from Purdue University two and a half years ago with a physics PhD, but now works full-time designing and publishing games. He is very happy.
Josh McDowell started playing board games after his wife encouraged him to find an inexpensive hobby. The joke is on her, as that encouragement turned into an expansive collection and regular schedule of playing games with his friends. He turned to his graphic design prowess to offset the costs and is now completely engrossed in all things board games. He lives in Indiana with his wife and three young children, gamers in the making. You can find his portfolio at www.behance.net/mcscowl.
Alexandr lives in Ukraine, Odessa and works as a freelancer and specializes in several styles: sci-fi, cyberpunk and fantasy. He's looking for hard-core projects in the styles that he likes. Most of all he is proud of his artwork for cards in board games. He dreams to release his comics and develop the indie game with a small group of people In the future. You can see his work at https://www.instagram.com/alexandrelichev/ and http://kotnonekot.deviantart.com.
Risks and challenges
This is Cephalofair Games's fourth Kickstarter, and, at this point, I believe the company has developed a reputation for delivering solid projects. I try to be as communicative as possible in my weekly updates so that you never have to wonder what is going on with your game. I will always let you know.
Admittedly, my delivery estimates have been off in the past, but with those mistakes in mind, I firmly believe that January is a very realistic goal to deliver this game to you.
There is a lot of art left to do, as well as some graphic design and making sure any mechanical changes or additions brought on by the Kickstarter process are implemented well, but all of us are dedicated to delivering this game to you in a timely manner.
I also stand by the quality of the game and my customer service. If ever you have a question or concern about this project, or you would like a refund on your pledge, up until when the game actually ships, just message me on Kickstarter, and I will be happy to help!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
