********************* PROJECT UPDATE ***********************
Having further assessed the samples and following feedback from our Kickstarter community we have decided to make a small design change to the branding on the Roam and Ranger. Instead of an embroidered badge at the top of each bag it will be replaced by a leather embossed one similar in execution to the badges further down on the bags. Our design gurus have used the magic of photoshop to create an artist's impression of how they will look. See below. We hope you agree that it's an improvement!
Also, After hearing from many of you that you’d like the Ranger Backpack to have a sternum strap, we’ve decided to include one at no extra cost!
The Ranger was designed with webbing on the shoulder straps to allow the addition of a sternum strap. We’re going to add this strap with every Ranger backpack — it’ll connect easily to the shoulder straps and then you can just click them together for extra secure backpacking. The below photo is an approximation of what we’ll be producing. Thanks for your feedback!
The Ranger and Roam weren't created to simply carry your stuff around. No, they're here to serve a higher purpose... They're here to cure our collective nylon fatigue. We know it's a lofty goal, but with buttery waxed cotton canvas and rich oiled full grain leather, we think they're up to the task.
Don't worry, we're not "big pharma" over here. We're not going to cure one ailment only to give you another as a side-effect. We won't, for instance, cure your nylon fatigue with our beautiful waxed canvas only to leave you feeling saggy and depressed. No, the Ranger and Roam will not become saggy baggies. We've designed structure into them with a combination of EVA padding, TP reinforcement, and the use of a light tarpaulin lining.
Our PU coated tarpaulin is super tough and provides just the right amount of rigidity. It allows the bag to move in a natural way, but won’t ever let it become so soft that it gets baggy. It’s also waterproof and easy to clean, so it’s a great, if unconventional, lining material.
Speaking of waterproof...
If you're afraid our rugged tarpaulin lining will be too harsh for your most sensitive accessories, you'll be pleased to know we've lined some pockets with sumptuous micro-suede. Its super soft synthetic suede that makes it easy to slide your precious cargo in and out with no worry of scratching or scraping. Now your walkman will have a cozy place to hide out.
Like we said before, these bags are about the material story. They weren't born to revolutionize the backpack, in fact, quite the opposite. We think a classic daypack is a wonderful design. It's elegant in its simplicity and we see no reason to overcomplicate it in the name of "design".
We've kept the styling pretty simple. We've got big pockets for your big junk, and other smaller pockets for your smaller junk. We're not going to tell you what each little pocket is for. That's up to you. You've navigated this big bad world for at least several years. You've gotten all the way to here, so we're guessing you know how to pack a bag. If you want to put a jar of Nutella in the hide-away magnetic bottle pocket, be our guest.
If you think you can fit your turntable in the TSA friendly laptop sleeve, go for it. We don't think it will fit, though. Unless it's no bigger than a 15" laptop. However, whatever you put in there, you'll be pleased to know that the suspended and EVA padded design will keep it safe.
The Roam is built from the same high quality materials as the Ranger, and it's a really great companion bag. It's a really useful size as well, not too big, not too small.
The interior micro-suede lined pocket is large enough for an iPad mini, but again, we're not telling you how to organize your carry. If you want to throw a cream-cheese bagel in there, go ahead. Actually, don't. Put your cream-cheese bagel in the main compartment. The tarpaulin lining is cream-cheese proof. Or, if you're off carbs, you could easily fit a full size iPad in there.

Some people have asked us, "Ridgemont is a fully functioning footwear brand with retailers and its own online store, why are we releasing products on Kickstarter?" For us, the answer is clear, and it comes down to a few key factors:
The Kickstarter community is vibrant and full of people who are excited about backing new and exciting opportunities first, and they understand the value that's associated. You're tuned in to what's going on, and you communicate with creators as well as other backers to help the entire community learn and grow. As a brand, this kind of interaction with our customers is invaluable.
The crowdfunding model allows us to pass our savings on to you in a very real way. We offer wholesale pricing to you in exchange for helping us pay for the initial development and production costs. All subsequent production runs of this product will be priced at an MSRP which is roughly double what you'll pay here.
Developing and producing new products the traditional way is risky because you don't truly know if it will resonate with your customers. If it doesn't, you've wasted a lot of time and money. Kickstarter is the ultimate free market. If you like it, you back it. If enough people back it, we make it. If it doesn't get funded, we don't make it.
Ridgemont is a fully-operational brand and although this is a special project, it’s not outside the realm of what we do everyday. In fact we've already successfully funded two projects on Kickstarter before! A motorcycle riding boot collaboration, Outback II x InR, with our buds over at Iron & Resin.
Plus we also launched our hugely successful 'Heritage' boot on Kickstarter - a combination of alpine elegance mixed with modern construction techniques. This boot sells so well we're struggling to keep up with demand!
Both of these boots have been brought to life through the backing and belief of the Kickstarter community. Thanks again!
Risks and challenges
Whilst we are not factory owners, we have strong relationships with everyone in our supply chain and regularly visit them to ensure our designs are built to the highest quality. That said, we do have to compete with other businesses for use of their facilities. Should we encounter any issues with capacity or supply of materials, we are one step ahead of the game and have alternative pre-vetted suppliers in place.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
