HUM is a short Sci-Fi film that draws inspiration from real life events surrounding the hum phenomenon, experienced in Bristol and Taos. A story of grief and loss, HUM blends together elements of character drama and mystery with contemporary quantum physics theories.

It is written and directed by Stefano Nurra and produced by Scott Imren.

STORY

Chris Page is a plumber in his late thirties with a bullet-proof approach to life: everything can be fixed. After his brother’s death he is tormented by a mysterious low-frequency sound that seemingly only he can hear - the Hum. He reluctantly seeks help from a so-called expert, Prof. James McAven, a disgraced quantum physics professor gone rogue. McAven reveals to Chris that the Hum is a clue to something much bigger - a door to another universe, a deeper dimension laying beneath our reality.

STYLE

Set in the present day suburbs of London, HUM touches on themes such as death, grief and the search for wonder in our existence. The film’s visual style will mostly feature real locations portrayed with natural light, awkward perspectives reached through wide-angled lenses and a constant juxtaposition of static and moving shots. Think of Close Encounters meets The Wrestler.

PEOPLE

In the role of Chris Page is Adam Shaw, a London based actor whose strong performance in the casting sessions impressed us as much as his previous high profile credits. Adam's been in Saving Private Ryan (his first gig!), Dr. Who, RED 2, The Bill, Wire in the Blood, just go check out his IMDB page!

Alongside him, as Prof. James McAven, will be James Bryce, a Scottish actor and theatre performer, whose previous role as Lou in Stefano's Border Queen has been acclaimed at many festivals and whose latest theatre work Nijinsky's Last Jump has received incredible reviews.

Rounding up the talented cast is Cravats frontman, Shend (Revolver, Merlin, Torchwood) and the wonderful Emma Kilby.

HUM is produced by Parsley Productions, an established TV and Film production company based in Brighton UK. From creating award winning short films for the London 48 Hour Film Project to working on Formula One Grand Prix they have the experience to deliver this film to the highest standards. Scott Imren, Hum's Producer, is a very experienced Director and Producer who’s credit appears on BBC, ITV, Channel 4, AlJazeera, RT and has worked extensively for Reuters, AP and ABC to name but a few.  He currently makes The Keiser Report.

HUM is written and directed by Stefano Nurra, a Director whose previous drama work, Border Queen, has attracted huge interest within the industry and is currently in competition in the prestigious Series Fest in Denver having already won best VFX at the Independent TV Fest in Vermont. Stefano’s script for HUM was a semi-finalist in LA's Screencraft Short Film Competition and was selected for the Glasgow Film Festival One to One pitch sessions.

The crew are all highly experienced film and TV professionals. Our Cinematographer, Michael Hawkins, who has worked with the likes of Alan Rickman, is currently Director of Photography for the global Formula E series and previously won us the award for Best Cinematography for the short Sorry You’re Leaving.

Our Visual Effects Department all work in the CG/VFX industry in London and have been featured in CG magazines. They recently won Best VFX at the Independent TV Fest in Vermont for Stefano's Border Queen.

Our Production Designer, Wendy Cairns, is also multi-award winning and has worked on many TV series, commercials and feature length movies.

WHY CROWDFUND?

The short film HUM is based on a feature film project currently in development. The Producers intend to showcase the short at international film festivals throughout 2017 in order to raise the funds needed to make the feature length version.

Through our amazing crew and partners we've managed to cover 80% of the budget needed to make the short film. We will be shooting in August on a Red Dragon camera and vintage Cooke Lenses (yes, the 20-100 lens used in Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut!), we have all the gear for camera movements, including a steadicam and Segway, a great post-production team already lined up but we still need a further £10,000 to complete the film.

This campaign aims to raise at least £7,000 that will be needed for production -  to cover expenses, travel, props, locations, accommodation, etc...

We also want to build a community around this project.  There is a long way to go between here and the final release of the feature film version and we want you to come on that journey with us. Get involved, spread the word and give us your feedback.  By contributing at this early stage you'll be able to share in any success the film eventually has and we have very high hopes for it!

HUM's script has been getting incredibly positive reviews from within the industry and everything is lined up for it to be a successful short film. We just need you to come on board with us and make it possible.

Risks and challenges

Film-making is never straight forward. From actors being sick to technical problems and the UK's unpredictable weather there will always be challenges along the way.

However, with the highly talented team we have assembled and Parsley Productions' 20 years of experience in the industry I am very confident we can overcome any hurdles that we come across.

We have contingency for most things and have not set any unrealistic deadlines that will compromise our ability to produce an excellent film.

The intention is to use this short film to help raise funds for the feature length version. We cannot guarantee success in funding the feature but the better we can make this short film, the better our chances of success will be.
