My name is Colleen Kwok and I am the writer/director of Rectangibles. This film is my MFA pre-thesis project in the graduate film program at NYU-Tisch School of the Arts and will act as a resume piece for my directing career.

SYNOPSIS

In 2009, it was announced that a legendary film stock was to be discontinued by the manufacturer. In the Christmas day of 2010, two teenagers from a trailer community unearth loads of 8mm films under a mysterious mattress. They and their neighbors try to put their limited knowledge together in order to get them developed. As they find out that the only lab that still processes this film stock will be finishing their last batch of processing on December 30th, they discover the films of kodachrome are stored in the trailers around the nation and the loss of poetry of life.

THE HAPPINESS

is the trailer community where the protagonist and his neighbors live in.

In this past summer, I incidentally past by a beautiful trailer community in Staten Island near the Goethals Bridge. That's how The Happiness existed in this story. Since we reached out to the residents from Goethals community, they have been thrilled to have a movie made there and generously offering all sorts of great help. I am deeply saddened about the recent event of Hurricane Sandy and the devastation of Staten Island. Despite the difficulty, I still plan to shoot and hope through this film we can spread the message of rebuilding and regrowth.

WHY MAKING THIS MOVIE

"When we announced that Kodak was exiting this business, the sadness we experienced was equivalent to the death of a loved one. A piece of me died that day." - a former Kodak's digital marketing manager.

Stories of shooting their last roll and send it to Dwayne's in 2010, and the screening in early 2011 when people shared their last roll of kodachrome footage are the essential inspiration for this story. Today with the only kind of motion picture slide film still being manufactured, I must make a movie shot with Kodak ektachrome, I must tell a story about people and when they step into the future holding vivid, warm memory from Kodachrome. but it's not just personal, its a united sentiment that we all share.

MY DREAM TEAM

Among many excitements to make this movie, the best part to me is the preciousness of having a group of my favorite people to work with. I can't wait to share about how awesome they are.

PRODUCER - "Rainbow Ruthie" Marantz

Ruthie Marantz was born and raised in the West Village of New York City. In high school she starred, directed, edited and produced her own public access television show “Rainbow Ruthie” that broadcast for four years. She studied film production for four years and shot her thesis “ The One” in San Francisco. “The One” was a study of Marilyn Monroe and the icon on camera in which she performed and directed. “ The One” screened at Ocularis in Brooklyn. After completing her University studies she returned home to New York to pursue filmmaking. She started working as a line producer for “Out of Our Minds” a film for rock icon Melissa Auf De Mar which was a selection at Sundance 2009. Recently she collaborated with filmmaker Bill Brand to create “Susie’s Ghost.” It was selected at BAMcinemaFEST, New Museum, Millenium Film WLA Film Forum, Black Maria Festival, and the National Gallery in Washington D.C. She is currently studying in the NYU Graduate Film Program.

DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY-  JOSHUA JAMES RICHARDS

The son of a travelling church minister, Joshua’s early life was spent moving through various towns across the UK until he finally arrived on the dark granite coast of South West Cornwall.  Here began his fascination with those on the periphery, marginalized people otherwise unrepresented by the dominant society, an interest he would later explore fervently through his photography and film work. He graduate with a first class BA Honors in Scriptwriting for Film and Television from Bournemouth Media School. With a relentless dedication to visual storytelling, he wrote and directed various short films across the country, winning first prize at the Cornwall International Film Festival. Increasingly frustrated with the limited resources in Cornwall and lack of support in the UK in general, Joshua participated in a series of medical trials, raising enough money to travel to New York to enroll on NYU’s prestigious Grad film program at the Tisch School of the Arts and was subsequently awarded an NYU Scholarship. Now drawing towards his third and final year, he dedicates himself wholeheartedly to the craft of filmmaking, writing and directing six short films whilst further developing his skills in Cinematography.

PRODUCTION DESIGN - Shannon Hogan

Shannon Hogan lives in Milwaukee Wisconsin. She studied film and media theory at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee with a focus on the future of media, receiving a BA in Film Studies and a BFA in Film. Shannon primarily works on 16 mm film, but also in media installation and photography. She enjoys working in the art department and on costume design. She has also spent time working for local non-profit Woodland Pattern, teaching kids to write and shoot their own videos. Some of her inspirations are Carolee Schneemann, Italo Calvino, and Chantal Akerman.

PRODUCTION DESIGN - Bo McGuire

Bo McGuire hails from Hokes Bluff, Alabama, where his parents met while working at The Waffle House. Coming from a Southern working-class town, Bo understood quickly how you must simultaneously celebrate your roots and break from them. He spent most of his life in Alabama. He spent another life in Tucson, Arizona where he learned better how to hammer poems. Now he hammers cinematic spectacles in film and on paper simultaneously without stopping, without bullets. He attend the First Baptist Church of Dolly Parton.

PRODUCTION DESIGN/First AC - Lilian Mehrel

Lilian Mehrel is a filmmaker on a quest to cup the poetry of the world in the palm of her films. Her cinematic eye for storytelling developed as she studied literature at Dartmouth, worked for peace and diplomacy at Seeds of Peace and the U.S. Department of State, led film workshops to youth from conflicted countries in the Middle East, and founded an arts, leadership, and peace program in Tel Aviv-Yafo for diverse girls. As a Reynolds Fellow, she wrote and illustrated a 226-page family memoir. In the past year as an MFA candidate at NYU’s Graduate Film program, she made three short films in the city of her childhood. Her most recent film will screen in a historic NYC theater blocks away from the 3rd Street School of Music she attended at the age of 3. Her films have been nominated for the Kodak award and have won her the Maurice Kanbar scholarship. Maira Kalman called her work “epic and cinematic… full of heart and curiosity.” Lilian promptly fainted.

WHY WE NEED HELP:

*There is very limited photo labs remain processing reversal(slide) film without cross-processing it. It would be really significant for this project, shot on 16mm color reversal stock, to be delivered to Kansas and processed in Dwayne's Photo Lab.

Grant Steinle, I can't wait to meet you!
