Elegant and timeless. Swing Bin is too beautiful that you would not want to use “waste” or “trash” to call it.

What is so special about Swing Bin?

It’s so sculptural that at first glance you might not notice that it is a waste bin. Swing Bin might seem typical with a simple cylinder-shape, but if you look closely you will recognize its true uniqueness. Its diagonal opening has been dramatically cut with a wooden lid, a lid that swings and tilts. It is this simple lid that hides a magical element to make the Swing Bin distinct from all others.

How it swings

Swing Bin has no mechanism. No screws, gears or wires to tilt the lid. It consists of only two things, a cylinder with a diagonal cut and a lid that fits precisely. Why then can the lid balance so perfectly as it swings?

Do you see a very slight difference in level cut into the end of the tube? This slight but precise and delicate form enables the lid naturally balance every time you throw your trash away. Among so many waste bins in the world, only Swing bin has this naturally balanced lid that contributes to the overall simple form.

It is elegant as well as practical

You can remove and replace the lid so easily that I believe keeping this waste bin clean is simpler than all others.

Swing Bin displays ultimate simplicity and elegance by eliminating all unnecessary elements but still retains its practical utility to integrate into various scenes of your daily life.

Swing Bin will add an elegant and sophisticated atmosphere to your living space, whether it’s your room decorated with a monotone taste, a living area where your family spend time together, a neatly arranged office or even a kid’s room, Swing Bin will suit naturally and perfectly.

White creates an elegant and bright mood whereas black adds a sense of classical elegance.

Moreover, Swing Bin may remind you of unconscious memories or bring a sense of nostalgia. Every time you throw your trash away, every time the lid swings, the memory of when you played with tumbling toys as a child would be brought into your mind.

 Design Process

In 2009, I devised the concept of creating the most elegant waste bin, one with the very minimum of components, and one that the world has never seen before.

After visualizing the idea with CAD drawings, I then created cardboard mock-ups and experimented with numerous variations to determine which size would achieve the most elegant look, what angles enabled the lid to perfectly balance, and how to make the lid close firmly yet quietly.

At this point of prototype development, I found that the Swing Bin needed small stoppers inside the cylinder body to prevent excess movement.

Later in 2009, I materialized the idea in aluminum and steel and further examined all aspects of the prototypes. While the details were further honed, the Swing Bin was first introduced to the public in November 2009 through the online Architecture and Design magazine dezeen.

In April 2010, I exhibited Swing Bin prototypes at Milano Salone. They were so well received that I was approached by many manufacturing firms interested in the design. Since its first public appearance, my Swing Bin has attracted many fans in the design industry and people around the world.

Although it gained a lot of attention I had to face the facts that some problems still remained with both the aluminum and steel prototypes:

1. The welded areas in both metals were not smooth, which detracted from the clean ideal I wanted to achieve.

2. The manufacture needed highly skilled craftsmen and hand-finishing to smooth out the welded areas, which raised production costs above what is practical.

3. Aluminum is a light but expensive, whereas steel was a little heavy for our needs.

After struggling to find a suitable solution without success, I decided that bringing Swing Bin to a commercial reality was not possible at that time.

However, even though I had decided to stop working on Swing Bin, I kept receiving many emails and inquiries from people telling me they wanted it, and that Swing Bin was a great achievement. Swing Bin continued to win design awards including the “Wallpaper DESIGN AWARD 2011” by Wallpaper and “Design Directory 2010/11 Top 25 products” by MONOCLE in 2011.

 Why Kickstarter?

In 2013, I decided to start again and deliver Swing Bin to people around the world. And in June this year, the prototypes were showcased  in Japan at the exhibition “Interiorlifestyle TOKYO 2014” and again, they have attracted many people in the industry.

After further investigation and meeting with several manufactures, I concluded that using ABS with a custom mold and manufacturing locally are my best way forward. By using a highly skilled Japanese factory that met my requirements, I can solve my previous problems and be able to bring the Swing Bin to market.

Now I have come to understand:

Swing Bin looks super simple, and its ultimate simplicity can only be realized successfully by perfect manufacturing.

Swing Bin is truly elegant, and its elegance requires a stylish touch and sedate matte finish of ABS. I have carefully chosen a particular kind of ABS to materialize my ideal design and texture, rather than other commonly used plastics.

Swing Bin manufacturing requires the creation of a special injection mold as well as minimum order quantity costs, which are significant.

These are the reasons why I am using Kickstarter, to share my story with you all, and to move my project forward.

After this campaign successfully ends, I plan to manufacture Swing Bin under the brand name called “MOHEIM”, which has welcomed me as the brand director. www.moheim.com

With your support I can finally bring Swing Bin to market, and I am more than eager to deliver it to every one of you.

Join this campaign and be part of my Swing Bin team!

Thank you!

UPDATE

Swing Bin has been upgraded to be able to meet the request from many of you who want a bag to be attached inside!

As you can see in the pictures below, Swing Bin contains a sheet of thin PVC rolled around inside.

You will be able to attach a bag on this elastic PVC sheet to keep the bin and its inner surface clean. For those who don't need it, don't worry. This sheet is easily detached!

The frequently asked problem of how to attach a liner or a bag inside has been now all solved in a very simple way just as a concept of my Swing Bin creation.

And I believe that this solution would not disturb the design of Swing Bin at all but would 100% maintain its beautiful appearance.

Swing Bin will be mass-produced at highly skilled factory in Japan and thus it will be shipped from Japan. For backers living outside Japan, an international shipping fee will be additionally required.

  • 20USD for one Swing Bin
  • 35USD for two Swing Bins
  • 45USD for three Swing Bins
  • 55USD for four Swing Bins

For large orders please contact me for further details.

Also, please note that backers outside Japan will be responsible for applicable tariffs and customs fees.

Risks and challenges

My biggest challenge was actually this campaign on Kickstarter. To achieve a successful campaign and to deliver my Swing Bin to everyone in the world, I have been working so hard for so long. I have found a great factory which meets my demanding requirements and which has the necessary skills to materialize my Swing Bin exactly as I want it to be. I have a well-designed prototype and everything is ready to go with all the backer’s support.
The only potential issue that I can foresee would be a delay in mold creation due to Swing Bin’s delicate design. The mold might need to go through several adjustments and strict checking steps before mass-production.
I will keep all the backers updated if any delays were to happen in delivery due to a hold up in production or shipping.
