A 10-week summer project where teens from Chicago's Englewood neighborhood will learn how to build their own websites from scratch.

Teamwork Englewood believes the best way Chicago can stay competitive in the new economy is to not only attract the best tech talent to our city, but to grow that talent right here in our neighborhoods.

UPDATE! Stretch Goal: $10,000

Because of the overwhelming support of our project backers, we exceeded our pledge goal within the first four days of our Kickstarter campaign! Meeting our stretch goal will enable Englewood Codes to expand our reach from 15 teens to 30. Any amount raised beyond our stretch goal will be used to further enrich the experience of our 30 participants.

The Project

This summer Teamwork Englewood will teach 15 (UPDATE! Stretch Goal: 30) local teens how to build and host their very own website from scratch. Participants will learn basic HTML, CSS and JavaScript code to build their sites. They will also learn how to configure a Raspberry Pi - a small $35 computer designed to teach programming - to act as a web server to host their site. The teens will also form small groups to compete in a website makeover competition for a local organization.

At the end of the 10-week project, students will celebrate their accomplishments and showcase their websites to family, friends and project backers at a Demo Day event.

In 2011, Teamwork Englewood partnered with After School Matters and Kennedy-King College to host a summer workshop where teens learned basic HTML and CSS.

The Raspberry Pi

The Raspberry Pi Model B is a $35 computer built by the Raspberry Pi Foundation in the UK. The web capable device is roughly the size of a credit card - and designed specifically to change the way young people interact with computers. You can read more about the Raspberry Pi at the Raspberry Pi Foundation's FAQ page, as well as articles on CNNThe New York Times and The Los Angeles Times.

Project Plan

The 10-week curriculum will start with Raspberry Pi basics. We will then move to basic HTML and CSS (including Twitter Bootstrap). After acquiring these basics skills, participants will compete in small teams to do a website makeover for a local organization in the neighborhood.

After the competition, the program will introduce students to basic JavaScript and, finally, to configuring the Raspberry Pi to host their sites online.

Project Budget

The total project budget for Englewood Codes is $5,500. This can be broken down into student costs and project costs:

Student Costs ($200 x 15 = $3,000)
Raspberry Pi Model B
SD card
Casing
Power supply
Peripherals
Domain name (1 yr registration)
Book stipend
T-shirt

Project Costs ($2,500)
Additional Raspberry Pis and supplies for instruction ($250)
Demo Day event ($1,000)
T-shirts for project backers ($750)
Kickstarter and Amazon fees (up to 10% = $500)

The Participants

Englewood Codes participants will reflect the diversity of youth in the Englewood community. Teamwork Englewood will leverage our relationships with families, Chicago Public Schools and local organizations to promote the program and identify youth who are interested. We will also recruit teens directly from Teamwork's mentorship programs.

RESOURCES
Our Kickstarter fundraising goal is a bare bones budget that covers only direct program costs (i.e. student supplies and learning materials). Teamwork Englewood is pursuing other funding sources that may allow us to add an additional instructor, travel costs for field trips, snacks, etc.

LOCATION
We are working with a local partner to confirm the location for the 10-week program. Our default option is to host the program in our own offices.

LOCAL HOSTING
In the past, we've taught students how to build websites, but we've never hosted the sites locally. And we've certainly never hosted the websites using a Raspberry Pi. We are confident we can work through the inevitable technical difficulties - especially with the expertise of our project backers.
