About this project
A Spin top in its raw form is a spectacular piece of engineering. But we wanted something even more, a spin top that can be interacted with and break a few of the physical laws. Like, gravity.
At 3 inches tall and 2 inches wide, Spin is one of the biggest if not, THE biggest metal production top machined from one piece of aircraft grade aluminum. Because of it size its also about 2.5 times heavier than other production tops. The size and weight feels amazing; and when the string is pulled it feels like a quite mechanical machine is turned on, that does not want to stop.
Every single curvature was carefully designed and engineered to look beautiful and spin indefinitely. Instead of spinning by hand, Spin is driven by wrapping Kevlar super strong woven string on the shaft of Spin and ultimately pulling the string resulting a high spin rate which is critical for a long spinning time and most importantly a stable and harmonious experience.
When it comes to the engineering of a top the tip is the most crucial part. The tip of Spin is precisely machined into a 2mm ball for distinctive stable spin. Aside from the stable spin the ball like tip directs all the force applied by pulling the Kevlar string to spinning rather balancing itself if it was on a pointy cone shape tip.
There is a rewarding feeling about a spin top spinning upside down on its head. Because of this we knew we had to design the head in a way where Spin can spin upside down for minutes and not seconds just so the rewarding feeling can last longer. Just like its tip, Spin’s head is also in a ball form but bigger to accommodate the upside down weight shift which insures the same distinctive stable spin no matter how its spun.
While its an amazing feeling to stare and appreciate every turn a top takes, its not enough, we want to interact with it and see even more. Things naturally fall if they are not stable because of gravity of course. But there is a loophole to this basic physics. If a heavy enough disk is spun at a fast enough rate, something phenomenal happens, it wont fall until the disk slows down! This is the gyroscopic effect.
The weight of Spin is concentrated on its bottom half (the disk). At 60 grams, the bottom half is 5X heavier than the top half which is 12 grams. The Kevlar string is about an arms length to take Spin to the highest spinning rate possible, which is very fast! At the top of Spin, the string gets wrapped in between the walls of a rectangular metal part which we call it the Generator. These three factors makes Spin act as a gyroscope where the weight concentration and the fast spinning rate keep Spin from falling, and the Generator becomes the setting point to set it on a table or hang it from a string.
The Base is the docking station for Spin when it's not spinning. It is machined from an aircraft grade aluminum and fine brushed. We see Spin as a merger of art and engineering-wonder and we think it deserves to be showcased on a table next to a computer while its not in motion. And that is why we created the Base.
The design and engineering process of Spin has been as mind bending as its functionality. Every little characteristics of Spin has been carefully engineered numerous times to achieve what Spin is now. Spin has 4 parts; spin top, 2 high speed bearings, and the Generator. The Generator and the two bearings are the key parts that makes Spin's strange behaviors possible and also the shape, size, and weight of the spin top portion has a tremendous effect on Spin's functionality.
At first we thought it was a crazy idea to combine a spin top and a gyroscope. Now it doesn't look so crazy anymore, we're just amazed by how we made it work. Help us in spreading the word so we can showcase our product to the world. Thank you.
