About

Why!?

Growing up, I was often misunderstood. I struggled with relating and connecting with others my age and had a hard time making friends. I was often bullied and I always felt like I was "that weird guy." It also didn't help that I wasn't exactly an exceptional student...though deep down I believed there was something deeper, more brilliant, bigger than me, that I was supposed to accomplish in life.

So...how did I escape my mess. I watched cartoons! It was my place of escape...from the reminders of daily bullying and teasing...from the reminders of failure in school...from the reminders of being misunderstood...from the reminders of feeling alone in a really big world.

But, with cartoons, I felt a connection. I felt connected to the characters, the struggle of those characters, the heroism and the victories and defeats that came with it.

I'm passionate about creating stories and drawing cartoons that send a message of hope, freedom and overcoming low self-esteem, depression, confusion, bullying and so on.

Why? Because, during my childhood, other great artists did that for me and for a generation of other kids who may have felt and experienced the same things I did.

I owe it to every kid and adult whose being bullied...whose feeling alone, unaccepted, confused, hurt, lonesome...who needs a laugh or a moment of positivity and encouragement...who needs to know that someone, even if the character is in a comic strip...can relate to them.

And thus..."By and By," the webcomic was born!

The Introduction

"By and By" is a weekly webcomic about Walter Ayo, a socially awkward 11-year-old and his struggle to understand God, girls, government and grown folk!

Life is a mystery for Walter. And he will stop at nothing to figure it out no matter how intense his overactive imagination becomes!

The series can be followed on http://kencomics.tumblr.com

With Walter are his friends, Dylan, Anita and Wayne.

Dylan is Walter's moral compass who often tries to move Walter's awkward ways towards what most would consider normal...only to end in failure. Anita is the only girl in school who even understands Walter, much less hangs out with him. And Wayne is the eyes and ears of all things geek and anything on the interwebs, from memes to conspiracy theories, causing him to put a LOT of gasoline on the fire that is Walter's already overactive imagination.

Behind the Scenes of "By and By" Webcomic!

"By and By" is a comic strip I started creating when I was working for a major bank...inside a lonely cubicle.

The name, "By and By," came from the title of an old hymnal that we used to sing at a church in Dallas I grew up in. The comic strip was at first called, "Kid Eccentric," but I wanted something that had a sort of backstory to it.

During my breaks and during lunch, I would use sticky notes to draw and create and before I knew it I created a little boy I first named "Ken." I later realized, I didn't want to use my real name and I chose to change his name to "Walter."

It was during that year that I started experimenting with the idea of creating a comic strip, writing stories and drawing the characters. Originally, I was going to have someone else do it but more and more I started experimenting with the idea of drawing the characters myself.

During Summer 2015 I started experimenting with turning my comic strip into a webcomic and I chose to launch "By and By" on Tumblr. I also share some of my behind the scenes work on Instagram @CartoonDaily1.

I've always drawn the strip via pen and paper, but, I have decided to reach out to you guys (and ladies) and ask for help to support my Kickstarter for a new piece of equipment...a tablet!

So...Why A Tablet!?

During the Fall of 2015, I suffered a loss...my equipment was stolen, leaving me no choice but to survive by drawing traditionally on pen and paper. The experience is good, but, I know it can be so much better and readers of the comic deserve so much more.

Currently, the only tool I’m needing in order to make “By and By” more standardized much like other webcomics is a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 that is valued at $899 and a Surface Pen for $59.99.

With your help the cost from out of pocket would be reduced immensely.

With your help, I should be able to purchase an efficient and affordable tablet that will allow me to create a more digital (yet still traditional) webcomic of "By and By" as well as serve others with my gift of creating various pieces of art and illustrations.

In order to keep in step with other great creatives who have set the standard for webcomic creation, I decided to step out and use Kickstarter to help move "By and By" to something greater.

My Passion for Cartooning, Writing and the Future of "By and By"

The tablet will be more than just for creating "By and By" webcomics. I also will expand towards publishing books and using it for blogs and other writings, whether they are mine or others in need of a good illustrator.

Once I develop enough strips of "By and By," my goal is to self-publish a collection of the first "By and By" comics.

I have been given so much by other great cartoonists and artists just from the things they published and created both in books and online and my goal is to do the same for kids and adults alike.

Ever since I was a socially awkward 11-year-old (because, needless to say, Walter is loosely based on my own life as a kid), I always came up with stories, ideas and concepts and realized that it was my gift to people. Mix that with my passion for art and illustrations I realized now was the time to bring my work to the table...or in this case...a tablet.

Updates

On my blog, KendallLyons.com, you will receive updates on this Kickstarter and what I'm working on behind the scenes.

Risks and challenges

The biggest challenge I could see after this project has been successfully funded would be the acquisition of the right software that will run on the tablet.

However, this problem is not likely to occur due to the availability of multiple programs that will allow me to properly draw and create comics and other art. I'm already thinking way ahead on this and am looking at Adobe Illustrator, which I might add in the past, has served me well!

And it certainly wouldn't be an issue acquiring the tablet once the project is successfully funded.
