When I first had the opportunity to participate in the San Francisco Opera as a supernumerary, in 1997, I developed a passion for a world I would have at one time dismissed. For the past six years, I have been working on a photographic project that captures the transformation I witnessed that occurs when the artist puts on a costume and becomes a character. I set up my studio in the opera house, capturing the artists just before they appear on stage. The culmination of this project will be a book of portraits of opera artists in full costume and makeup that celebrates and re-contextualizes the character with the media of lens and light.
Top art-book publishers require the submission of a book dummy, which, created by a talented book designer, costs a lot. We need the front money to make this happen.
