Easily brew ridiculously good coffee at home. A dual chamber "twist" on a traditional French press. Big bold taste, no gunk.
All We Have to Say...
I'm Jake. A few things you should know about me before we take this relationship to the next level:
I adore coffee (clearly, because what says "I love coffee" more than pouring hot bean juice on your face). I also happen to know a thing or two about coffee from my previous career as a Brand Manager at Caribou Coffee. I have been brewing coffee at home for years. For home brew I go back and forth between a French press and a pour-over. Both can make a great cup of joe, but each have their respective drawbacks. The French press is great because the coffee grounds get to hang out with the hot water for a few minutes (a full immersion allows for a robust extraction), but the single filter leaves a lot of coffee gunk in your cup...or mouth. The pour-over produces a crisp cup, but it's a very manual and tedious process. If you don't know what you're doing you'll end up with under-extracted coffee...brown water, not black gold.
This project started with a simple question: Can we design a product that incorporates the best features of both a French press and a pour-over? Can we design a product that makes it easy to brew ridiculously good coffee at home?
To clarify for the people following along at home:
- Easy to use, easy to clean, easy to love. Basically, you don't have to be a skilled barista to make this sucker sing.
- Ridiculously Good means a big full-bodied cup of coffee without any sludge. The power of a French press with the crispness of a pour-over. Oh, and complete control over the extraction time would be nice.
Eight months and over 50 prototypes later we are at a place where we can honestly answer our initial question with a confident YES!
Cold Is So Hot Right Now
Duo is also perfect for brewing iced coffee. If you prefer a traditional cold press brew, fill Duo with coffee and water and let it sit in your fridge for 12 hours. It’ll be the best cold press you've ever had. If you’re more the instant gratification type, go with a Japanese style iced coffee. Use Duo just like you would for hot coffee, but fill the bottom chamber with ice before you start. The Japanese method produces tea-like aromas and flavors due to the rapid cooling of the coffee over ice.
We're nerds. You'll thank us.
We worked with a Stanford PhD candidate to test over 60 different filter combinations to determine the optimal micron rating (basically the size of the holes in the filter) for each filter. Each filter is stainless steel and removable for easy cleaning.
Stage-One: the primary filter holds the coffee and prevents most of the grounds from entering the lower chamber. The stage-one filter is removable to allow for easy clean-up.
Stage-Two: any stray coffee grounds that wiggle their way through the primary filter are removed by the much finer stage-two filter.
Separation of Grounds and Coffee
A big problem with the French press is that even after you "press" the coffee, the coffee grounds remain in contact with the coffee. This results in over-extracted coffee if you don't immediately pour out all of the joe. With Duo's dual chamber design, the coffee grounds remain in the top chamber and your precious coffee passes into the lower chamber. Coffee in the bottom chamber can now sit without fear of over-extraction.
More Color Options:
The RED, BLUE, and GREEN color options are now unlocked!
If we reach our funding goal of $50,000 we'll be able to offer the grey color option featured in our video. However, with your support we can unlock up to three additional color choices. $60,000 unlocks red, $70,000 unlocks blue, and $80,000 unlocks an exclusive Kickstarter green. You'll be able to select from any unlocked color at the end of the Kickstarter promotion. Both the lid and silicone grip will be the same color.
Stretch Goal: The Bean Bonus
This is a big one. If we reach our stretch goal of $90,000, everyone who orders a Duo Coffee Steeper will also receive a FREE 1/2 pound of coffee from one of Jake's favorite coffee producing countries: Costa Rica. Jake fell in love with Costa Rican coffee on a coffee trip to the Tarrazu coffee region of Costa Rica.
How Do you Clean?
Give Duo as a Gift
We've created special cards that you can print out and give to your friends and loved ones to let them know you purchased a Duo Coffee Steeper just for them. Print the card here: http://goo.gl/e5wO4W
We started working with our manufacturer months ago to ensure that Duo was designed for manufacturability and that we can actually deliver on our promise to you. Working with any overseas manufacturer can be challenging. To ensure the process goes smoothly we will employ a manufacturers' rep to assist with production. Our rep will visit the factory, perform quality control, and ensure that we are getting the best possible product within our promised time frame.
What People are Saying
Duo would like to thank: Jon Denis, Matt Bulloch, Michael Dearing, Perry Klebahn, Cassandra Brooksbank and Poison Inc. Productions, The Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at Stanford Graduate School of Business, Grizcoat.com, Will Ferrell for his performance in Elf, and the countless other individuals who supported us along the way.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We're trying to build something that currently doesn't exist. Although this excites us, we realize we are going to run into obstacles along the way. However, Duo is a relatively simple product (i.e., no fusion reactor), and we anticipate climbable obstacles and not project crushing road blocks.
Luckily for us (and you) this isn't our first rodeo. The fine folks at Enlisted Design do this sort of thing for a living (Check out Enlisted's rocking Kickstarter project, Urbio: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1627079510/urbio-vertical-garden…). We are confident we will be able to deliver on our promise. We also promise to be fully transparent and provide our supporters with regular updates as we move from concept to production to fulfillment.
There are many great methods to brew coffee at home and we encourage you to try out different methods to find the one that best suits your taste profile. For us, we happen to prefer the steeping method for two reasons. 1) Since the coffee and hot water get to hang out for a longer period of time the steeping method can bring out difficult to extract flavors that drip coffee might miss. And 2) A metal filter allows more of the coffee oils to remain with the coffee. We believe these oils help create a more flavorful cup of coffee.
As coffee lovers, we designed Duo to steep a great cup of coffee. However, as many of you pointed out, the exact same steeping method that Duo uses is also used to make tea. And the dual chamber design would prevent the tea from over extracting. We were hesitant to make the claim that Duo can steep a great cup of tea until we had a few tea experts/lovers give it a whirl.
We gathered a few tea people, including Lindsey Hansen, the CEO of Tea District, for a tea taste test. We are thrilled to report that Duo received high praise.
Loose Leaf All-star: We recommend using loose leaf tea. The Stage One and Stage Two filters will ensure that all of the tea leaves will remain in the top chamber after you twist.
Any type of loose leaf tea should work: We tested Rooibos tea, a tea with very fine leaf particles, and had great results. The particle size of Rooibos tea is greater than the particle size of coffee, so we didn't have any issues with the Rooibos leaf draining into the lower chamber.
