About this project
After a deadly virus has wiped out humanity, a young man struggling for survival unexpectedly time travels into the past. Will he be able to save the love of his life?
LUCID eliminates the EITHER OR and gives you both. Our characters are 3-dimensional people struggling to navigate love, loss and regret just like each and every one of us, but what makes it exciting is their extraordinary circumstances and the seemingly impossible choices they face. What would you do if you could suddenly travel back in time and correct your biggest mistakes? Would you even dare to try? We want to answer that question with this film.
Lucid is a dramatic thriller written by Melinda Cohen and Adam Roa and directed by Ravi Vora. It tells the story of Seth, a storybook artist, who has fled to a remote cabin after a deadly virus has wiped out humanity. He lives in isolation, injecting himself with a daily Antidote until one day, Seth's only syringe is compromised and he is forced to alter the state of the Antidote. This has an unexpected side effect: Seth can now travel back in time to when he first met Ari, the love of his life.
At first, Seth is thrilled to relive the past. But with choice comes responsibility. Not only must Seth now attempt to save everyone he loves from the apocalypse, he also uncovers troubling events of the past that his mind has blocked from his memory. As he makes these dark discoveries, Seth comes face to face with a chilling truth: He was not the person he thought he was.
Lucidity explores two major themes: Forgiveness and addiction. As Seth struggles to overcome the mistakes he's made, he is confronted with the painful realization that his inability to forgive in the past is what haunts him in the present.
Deep down, Ari firmly believes that she is not worthy of love. To numb the pain of her own self loathing, she habitually abuses drugs and alcohol. When she meets and falls for Seth, she is faced with the biggest challenge of all. In order to accept his love, she must first learn to love herself.
We are so thrilled to have such an incredible team on board for this project already. The combined forces of all these talented people will result in an amazing film.

After having broken down the budget several times it's become clear to us that 70k is the absolute bare minimum for which we can make this film, and that means calling in A LOT of favors. After the Kickstarter fee and the cost of perks are deducted, really we're left with about 62k, which means the majority of the people involved in making this movie will be working for free and we will not be able to get a lot of the equipment that would take this film to the next level.
So the reality is: Even with our solid network of passionate and dedicated people who are willing to donate their time to this project, a budget of 70k will still be a real challenge to pull off.
WHICH IS WHY OUR REACH GOAL IS 100K.
Hitting 100k would help in so many ways. We could afford:
- Bringing on actors who otherwise wouldn’t be able to work with us for free
- Other vital production members whose expertise and talent will take the finished product to the next level
- Better equipment
- Hire more experienced post-production people who can give this film the “Studio Quality” look that we want to achieve.
When making a feature film, there are so many steps and hidden expenses. Just submitting to festivals can cost up to $100 per submission. Every second of that footage has to be color corrected, scored and sound designed, not to mention special effects and marketing.
With the current budget, we’ll be pinching pennies on a shoestring budget. The extra 30k would give us room to pay people what they deserve and keep everyone in good spirits while creating an overall better film.
Every penny you donate above the 70k will go directly into the film.
The script was written specifically with a small budget in mind, so there's very few locations, most of which we can use for free. One of our main expenses is renting the cabin that Seth lives in. Our plan is to rent two cabins in close proximity. One will be for filming, the other for the cast and crew to sleep/live in for the duration of the shoot.
The majority of the budget will go to equipment rental costs, location fees, accommodation/travel, food, and crew. Here's a breakdown:
PRE-PRODUCTION: Everyone works for free. In addition to prepping and running the Kickstarter campaign we have production meetings, auditions, table reads, script polishes, location scouts, wardrobe fittings, renting of props and set pieces etc. We assemble as much equipment as we can. We nail down and book our cabin location.
PRODUCTION: Our goal is to shoot in Dec/Jan. Most everyone will still work for free but we pay each crew member a low day rate. Remember, these people are hard-working individuals and this is their livelihood. They will work a minimum of 12 hrs a day, sometimes more. Another big chunk of the budget will go towards keeping everyone well fed. We will have a paid editor on set who will be editing the film as we shoot. There's many huge advantages to this, the biggest one being that by the time we wrap principal photography, we'll already have a rough cut of the entire movie ready to go! That means you'll get to see the completed film that much sooner.
POST-PRODUCTION: Since we'll have an editor doing the bulk of the work on set, most of what's left to do is color correction, scoring, sound design and special effects. All of the people in charge of this phase will be working for a fraction of what they would usually charge, but they will all need to be compensated for their time.
FINALLY, GETTING NOTICED: The best route for an independent film of this nature to be seen is through the festival circuit. This requires lengthy and costly submission processes, as well as cost of transportation to attend the festival screenings and promote the film.
**If you want more than one perk, you will need to donate from more than one email address. Only one perk is allowed per email address.**
IF YOU LIVE OUTSIDE OF THE U.S. AND WANT A PERK THAT REQUIRES SHIPPING, ADD $7 USD TO YOUR PLEDGE AND MESSAGE US TO LET US KNOW!
We want you to feel like an integral part of our movie, which is why we have spent many hours coming up with some incredible perks. For example, our dazzling production designer Lauryn Myers has created these hand crafted necklaces.
Also, for those of you with creative aspirations, wanna learn how to take a picture like this WITH YOUR IPHONE...??
...our director Ravi (who has established himself as a highly respected photographer in the Instagram community), is offering unique insight into his process with a variety of workshops and consultations.
The delivery date on the majority of the prizes is listed as 'December 2014' although certain perks (like the necklace/script/invite to wrap party etc), will happen way before then. We expect the film to be completed much sooner than that, probably towards the end of spring, but until the film finds distribution (theatrical or other means such as DVD or VOD), we are not able to make it available to the public. However, we plan to have several private screenings to promote the movie and will keep you informed so you can see what you helped make.
I'M NEW TO KICKSTARTER. HOW DOES THIS WORK?
Kickstarter is an ALL OR NOTHING fundraising platform, meaning that if we don't reach our goal before time is up, we don't get to keep any of the money. That's right, everything is returned to the people that invested and the project doesn't see a dime, which means no movie. So please! Spread the word to your friends, family, and social networks!
It is truly an exciting time to be a filmmaker. Even five years ago it would have been impossible to pull off what we're setting out to do, because the technology wasn't advanced enough and crowd funding hadn't been invented yet! Today, we can make a feature film for 70-100k that will look and feel like a real studio movie. Help us achieve that dream. We firmly believe this project has amazing potential, and you can be a part of helping it reach that potential.
Thank you for each and every contribution.
Sincerely, Melinda Cohen, Adam Roa and Ravi Vora

Risks and challenges
When making a feature film, you always face certain risks and many challenges. Fortunately, we have the most important thing in place: A team consisting of highly trustworthy, dedicated and extremely professional people who have the necessary experience to know what making a movie entails. We KNOW it's hard. We KNOW it takes hundred and hundreds of hours of grueling work, not just on set but especially after principal photography is done and post production starts. All of us have spent the last decade doing nothing but WORKING IN THE FILM INDUSTRY, and even though there's ups and downs, we've all been on enough sets to know the process inside and out. Also (and this might be the most valuable of all): We've gotten a lot of mistakes out of the way already.
We genuinely believe we have invested the time to ensure that this project will succeed on every level. Thank you for putting your trust in us. We will not let you down.
