One summer afternoon, Kurt emailed me a photograph. It featured two miniature HO scale railroad figurines posed next to a huge june bug. He simply wrote: "Here's what I want to do with the rest of my summer."
That lush, mossy backdrop alongside a creepy bug made the kid in me light up. My reply was just as short: “OMG. THIS HAS TO BE A KIDS BOOK!”
And Welcome to the Small World was born.

Welcome to the Small World, A Book of Big Surprises is a compilation of vignettes capturing these hardworking and adventuresome minis at work, at play, and in a variety of surprising situations. From trying to milk a giant cow at the farm, to selling balloons at the fair, to running from a giant squid, these minis guide us along a delightful tour of their small world, which is really our own!
We wrote this book with 4- to 8-year-old kids in mind, and so far all of our audience testing indicates the magical imagery and imaginative stories are shockingly good fun. And like most things that fill kids with awe and wonder, it has big appeal with adults too.
The book is almost complete, but we’re still working on a final cover design. Back our project at any level and you’ll have the exclusive opportunity to decide which cover makes the cut!
Soon after sending those first images in 2010, Kurt launched into the world of the minis and titled his project, Un Petit Monde (A Small World in french). Since then, he has enchanted readers through coverage on:
Please help us reach our goal
All photos have been shot and selected, the stories are written and the book is 90% designed and ready to go -- all we need to do is publish it. You can help!
If our project is fully funded, we will be able to print the first run of books, which includes all the reward copies and more to sell at local bookstores and boutiques.
Please help us put this quirky book into print! If you do, you'll get some great rewards -- just look to your right.
**Please note: some rewards include your very own mini. Due to their impishly little size, mini's can pose a choking hazard with children, so please back these reward levels at your own risk.**
Please help spread the word by sharing on Facebook and Twitter

Put our book under your tree
We won't have the books printed in time for the holidays. However, we will supply a gift card. Once the project is fully funded, we will unlock a variety of downloadable and printable holiday cards featuring our tenacious minis. The card will let your kid, friend, loved one or cousin know that their premium quality book is on the way – and that their holiday gift helped fund a whole lot of awesomeness. Then we'll deliver the book straight to you when it's complete.
STRETCH GOALS (updated 12.1.13)We've been able to raise our initial funding goal in 12 days. Thank you! For new – and past – backers wondering what we will do with any extra money raised, here’s what we’re planning:
FIRST STRETCH GOAL: $12,000
- Everyone who has backed at this point will receive a free eBook version of Welcome to the Small World! From this point forward, we will offer this as a pledgable reward for $15.
- We’ll also be able to increase our initial print run from 350 to 500. These extra copies (over and above the reward copies and copies for local small retailers) will make it plausible for us to offer our book for purchase on Amazon and other online booksellers.
SECOND STRETCH GOAL: $17,000
- We will be able to add more pages (which means more pictures of minis!) to the book. It is likely we’d increase from the original 44 pages up to 52 pages.
- And at this point, we'll be on a much bigger adventure! So we will hire an experienced publishing/marketing consultant who will focus on extending our reach through the publishing world.
If you have any questions or comments about the goals or the project overall, don’t be shy – send me an email through the “Contact Me” link (on the right under my profile picture) OR post a comment through the Comments tab. If you have a question, it’s likely someone else has the same one. So ask away.
Risks and challenges
This book is 90% complete. As a project manager and a graphic designer, I've been guiding large projects through the print process since I was knee-high to a ... june bug (which translates to over 20 years of hands-on experience.) I'm confident we can get the book printed in a timely fashion. I will be in regular contact with our backers from start to finish; you'll know where the book is every step of the way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
