WHAT IS THE “UNDAUNTED” PROJECT?
“Undaunted” is the title of a large visionary conceptual body of work to be created by Northwest artist Judith Kindler, for a major exhibition. The project includes a film documenting Kindler and the art-making process by Ty Migota, an accomplished Seattle Filmmaker. Paul Klein, Arts Writer for the Huffington Post, will organize and mastermind the major exhibition of Kindler’s work in New York or Chicago.
WHAT IS KICKSTARTER AND WHAT ARE THE REWARDS?
Kickstarter projects are efforts by real people to do something they love or something significant in their life. It is a call for funding in exchange for valuable rewards unlike typical investing. In addition you get to watch and be a part of the project as it unfolds through blog posts, pics, and videos as the artist brings her ideas to life with your help.
But key to Kickstarter's unique format is that every project must be fully funded before its time expires or no money changes hands. Click on a level of funding to the right and pledge an amount. You will receive all the rewards listed for that level in exchange for your funding if the final goal is met. Judith has put together some great rewards at each level. Almost all levels include either original art or limited edition art. Much of the original art is from Judith’s personal collection that she has held in reserve. Similar art is selling through her galleries at up to twice as much as the reward value. Here are some images of the rewards.

SO WHAT IS SO GREAT ABOUT THIS PROJECT?
This is your chance to be an actual participant in a major American work of art by Judith Kindler. Your image or words will be in galleries, maybe museums. Judith wants to include images of you and your words in major works that will transform our ideas of ourselves. Think of it as "groupthink" gone wild! Judith wants to explore what happens when the individual becomes part of the psychological phenomena of "groupthink." The installation will address the impact of how the attitude of an individual is a product of identification with groups of people or collective consciousness, and how their view of the world is through filters defined by a particular group. For example, people understand the world around them through group filters, like a favorite radio show or watching a particular cable TV show, or membership in a specific group. Judith seeks to create a new collective consciousness here through this art, utilizing "audience participation” in the art-making process.
HOW YOU PLAY A DIRECT PART IN THE ART?
(THE AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION FACTOR)
You will have the unique opportunity to be photographed in Judith’s studio in Seattle (for those of you that live in the area or are traveling there.) Your images will be organized and analyzed, not only informing the work, but becoming a direct part of the final art and installations. Also, all participants will be asked to answer one to three questions (posted below) in depth. Those words are an important part of the art. They will inspire large mounted installations that start as two-dimensional works but develop into three-dimensional sculptural constructions reshaping space. Judith will be using the innovative new mixed media, she has created combining rubber-like polymer derivatives with the altered image and other media.
HERE IS THE IDEA FOR ONE OF THE INSTALLATIONS: COLLECTIVE CONSCIOUSNESS
With these contributions, Judith will create a number of large installations for a grand exhibition. This main focal installation will be made up of life-size human structures bound together in vast groups by their expressions and/or their words. Each of these life-size human structures will be one of our backers. In this concept model and illustration, I multiplied an image of my assistant, Dino, to give the sense of individuals large groups. In reality, each group will be made of many different individuals. One of them could be you.
This is from Judith, herself: “Through the participation of my backers, I want to look at language, both verbal and unconscious body language, to understand social constructions of reality and attitude. Through engaging people directly in the art-making process, the art is open to the idea of chance or change from the initial platform of thought. This challenges the fundamental idea that creativity is solely the product of an individual artist, because, by its very nature, the process creates a collective consciousness (the participants), which then informs the final art I will create. Therefore, true to the subject of the work, this process is vital. The social constructionism of this group becomes the resultant construct, or basis, of the new art I create.”
IT’S ALL IN THE WORDS
Whether you have yourself photographed or just can offer up your words, we would like everyone to take a stab at answering at least one of these questions in depth. But hopefully you will answer all three.
1. If you could do anything in the world what would it be and why?
2. What gives you the most pleasure in your life and why?
3. What upsets you the most in your life and why?
Please email you responses to me at this email address firstname.lastname@example.org
Write “words” in the subject line.
NOTE: You must be a backer to take part in this.
SCHEDULING YOUR PHOTOSHOOT
If you want to be a part of the installation, we will need you to schedule a time when you can come into the studio for your shoot. This shoot will take about 30 minutes max. Please email us at email@example.com and write “photo” in the subject line. Give us your contact info including name, email address and phone number and we will contact you to set up a time.
NOTE: You must be a backer to take part in this.
WHAT DOES THE MONEY GO TOWARDS?
We are looking for $125,000 to fund all the costs associated with the making of the art: R&D, materials, the creation and production and assistance. Also the funds cover the costs associated with the exhibition of the work including shipping and installation. Finally the funds cover the costs of the creation of a documentary film
WHAT HAPPENS IF OVERFUNDED?
A second phase of our project is the documentation and writing of a book entitled Undaunted, covering the final completed works and installation, with some historical references of Judith's life. Over funding will go towards this phase.
