This is the fourth installment of the Covers with Friends series. That's crazy to me!! Each one has had it's own challenges and benefits. I was amazed, humbled, and elated to see that the last album made it onto billboards top 100 albums for the first time ever! I owe all of that to my kickstarters. I've been in the studio quite a bit since my last campaign, and have had the amazing opportunity to produce solo albums for a couple of the friends on my previous projects (Gil and Briana!) and non of that would have happened with out you guys. I've got a few more projects already lined up as a producer, and we're hoping to record another Station Breaks album before too long, so I'd love to be working on another volume of 'with friends' on the side while doing all that other stuff, which is why I'm starting the funding now.
As I detailed in one of my last updates for Re-covering with friends, even though the last one was the most successful fundraising effort of all the projects, at over $68,000, projects like these are amazingly expensive, and I spent every single dollar (and more!) on making the record. Not to go into too much boring detail, but about 40,000 of the total was initially set aside for taxes, fees, shipping, purchasing licenses to cover the songs, and printing the CDs, and the rest was pretty quickly spent on actually making the record through studio time, musicians, engineering, mixing, mastering, travel & food.
There are obviously corners I can cut if needed, but I really enjoyed sharing the success of these albums with the folks that helped me make them sound so good! The musicians, and engineer all got a little extra for the last project, which they so very much deserved. I'd love to be able to do that again on this one if possible. I set the goal for the last album at $1, and was happy to come out of pocket however much was needed, thankfully the costs weren't too much more than what was raised. This time, however, if I'm going to make an album of equal quality, I'll need to make sure we reach at least a certain level of support so I can achieve that goal. I wish I could just go in and make the record by personally funding it, but unfortunately that's not in the cards at the moment. I've got a little baby boy arriving this month, and in addition to my addition, I have a couple other projects/artists I really believe in that I'm investing some time and capital into this year to help them make records. (I think you'll be really happy I did!)
Ok! All that to say, I love making these Cover albums with my friends, and I'm happy keep working hard on them as long as you guys want me to! It is, however, completely up to you guys if you want to make it happen. If you can't support this one right now, trust me, I totally understand! Or if you wanna just wait and download it, or buy it from me at a convention, all good! I'll probably be promoting this campaign just to make sure everyone hears about it, but I'm definitely not gonna do the hard sell. I know there are a ton of worthy charities, causes, campaigns, patreons, and other kickstarters, not to mention bills, family, and just life in general. We all have our own financial ups and downs so if we don't reach the goal I won't be heartbroken, and I'll try again some other time!
Risks and challenges
This is (counting Gil and Briana's albums) the 7th time I'll be using kickstarter for this purpose. The challenges to slightly change for each project, but specifically, for this one, my main challenge will be to provide a more interesting look at the process for the backers. that was the thing I think most lacking from the previous projects, and I think I've got some ideas as to how to capture more interesting content from the process this time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
