About this project
Bikes have been in my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up in Germany, I raced road, mountain, BMX and track bikes. Life just seems better when you ride a bike. Today I own many different bikes for many different purposes. So when I was looking for a way to hang them on the wall, I couldn't find one solution that would work for all my bikes. I didn't want to scratch the paint on the top tubes or kink the cables. That is when I decided to design Shelfie. The first "patent pending" bike shelf that uses the seat to hook and hang your bike.
As seen on:
No more scratched frames or kinked cables.
Bikes are more than just cheap transportation. With our cities growing larger and becoming more densely populated, it is only logical that bicycling is going to get more and more popular. Programs like City-Bike sharing and the construction of additional bike paths will introduce more people to riding in the city. Additionally the positive health effects and simply put “FUN”, will lead many to try out faster road bicycles or even mountain bikes and slowly adopt cycling as a recreational sport. We want to make sure that bikes can be a part of your life and that is why we developed the SHELFIE.
Any will bike look great hanging from a SHELFIE.
Display old races bikes, collectable frames or show off your hard earned trophies.
A well displayed classic bicycle in a living room is one of most interesting focal points you could have. There is no better conversation starter than handcrafted Italian racing steel mounted to the wall. Think of all the memories that could be revisited and how it might motivate you to create new ones.
Get a helping hand from SHELFIE when ever you need it.
Unless you have three arms, working on your bike can be a little cumbersome. SHELFIE is not a professional work stand, but a great little helper for smaller tasks little changing tires, adjusting your brakes or derailleur and so on.......
How much space is needed to hang two bikes?
Prototyping out of wood allowed us to make changes without breaking the bank.
We made sure all the angles and curves will work for your bike.
One size fits all.
Here is the Shelfie plan:
As soon as we reach our funding goal, the Shelfie mold will be produced by a well established tool and die shop. When the tooling is completed, it will be sent to our plastics manufacturer, where the first Shelfie test pieces will be cycled through (we were told that tooling and set-up will take roughly about 90 days). Once everything meets our high standards, the Shelfie production will begin. This should give us enough time to source packaging and wall anchors (which we will supply with the Shelfie). Last, the vinyl protectors will be cut to size by our friends at Usheco Inc. in Kingston NY.
The first "ever" plastic molded production Shelfies should reach our backers by October.
SHELFIE can be used with or without a vinyl protector.
A fun and easy way to bring some color into your house. The SHELFIE's will come with two vinyl protectors, (Kickstarter special) a black one and an additional colored one. (you will have a choice of red, blue, orange, purple, silver or green) They are easily applied or replaced and will come already cut to size. Just peel the backing off, place on the SHELFIE and rub the air bubbles out while applying some heat with a blow dryer. DONE !!! EASY!!! (you can see an installation of the vinyl protector in the prototyping video above)

Help us spread the word and put a SHELFIE in every home.
We are 100% committed to make Shelfie a reality and solve any problems so that we can deliver on our promise.
Thank you sooooooo much for your support !!!
Risks and challenges
With any project there are risks associated, however it is our job to make sure we minimize these risks for our backers.
We hired an experienced Industrial designer from Sprout by Design and narrowed down our search for a well established manufacturer. Although we tried to rule out any possible production delay through the prototyping process, there is always a chance that something unforeseen pushes a projects deadline further back. As a supporter, you will be getting updates on a regular basis and will be informed when a later arrival of your reward is anticipated. We are committed to offering the product as promised, if in the unforeseen event anything happens, we will alter our delivery time until our high quality standard is achieved.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We talked to UPS and the USPS and have the following prices for this large and not light package.
Shipping domestic (within the US) = $ 30.-
Shipping to CANADA = $ 50.-
Shipping to EUROPE = $ 90.-
which means that the early bird specials are selling for $ 95.- plus shipping.
and after the early bird special runs out they are selling for $ 120.- plus shipping.
I am sorry that I am not able to offer cheaper shipping costs at this time, but this is part of the growing pains (without distribution) we have to go thru. Anybody who supports this campaign will always have first priority to me. thank you for understanding.
the plywood versions (prototypes) are made out of 19 layers of 3/4 inch plywood (13ply without voids). It almost takes a whole sheet (4x8) to make one Shelfie, which costs about $ 70.-. Then you need paint, glue and sandpaper = another $ 10.- which adds up to $ 80.- in materials. It takes me roughly four days to make one plywood Shelfie. At this point I would have to ask too much for them. ( roughly $ 800.-) I want this to be available to everybody and injection molding will allow me to do this.
Due to the high cost of tooling we had to make a choice on the first edition Shelfie's being left-handed. Our Facebook survey revealed that almost 90% of riders prefer the drive train side to face away from the wall. The plans to make a right-handed version already exists but will have to wait until more funds are available. If this Kickstarter campaign does better than we expect, any additional funds will go towards the second tool.
There are four holes, one in each corner inside of the shelf, this is where you attach the Shelfie with wall anchors to the wall. The screw heads get concealed by a plug/cap. We will supply anchors for Sheetrock, wood and concrete/block. You will also get a paper-template (hole-pattern) with the instructions, that way pre-drilling the holes is super easy and accurate.
