xPirate Game Board with iPad
xPirate Game Board with iPad

xPirate is the worlds first and only board game with integrated game play through the use of an Apple iPhone, iPod touch, iPad or iPad Mini, patent pending.  Only xPirate gives users the ability to bring a board game to life through the use of multiple apps and mobile platforms.

We have created and produced an actual boardgame product and currently have inventory.  The requested funds are needed to develop our marketing and media campaign.  We are gearing up to have product in stores for the 2013 Christmas season.  We require more funds to hire the appropriate PR firm and begin a national media campaign.  You can view the product at www.xpirategame.com or view a video on You Tube by searching xpirate boardgame.

Risks and challenges

Industry Overview:

Children and families today spend a lot of time focusing on their mobile devices; playing games, texting, surfing the web, etc. How often do you see kids talk to their parents without ever taking their eyes off their mobile device? This worry is around the fact that it’s getting more difficult to pull kids away from their mobile devices for “Family Time.” In another article by NPD.com “households with kids ages 4 - 14 own an average of 10 different devices, with kids using an average of five of those devices.” Kids are overwhelmed with technology that they have access too in a typical home. Kids with a device in hand, zone out others in the room and it takes multiple calls (yells) from a parent or friend to get their attention.

Board games used to be king of the family games. Growing up, kids have loved to play board games but that is changing. Board Games for the family have been on the decline since the 80s and mobile apps are taking off. What’s the reason for this? The reason is the explosion in mobile devices in households.

The key issue that parents are presented with is “Family Time.” In a technical world it’s sometimes difficult to get or even keep the attention of kids. Board games are so yesterday for a lot of kids that have succumbed to the technical draw of the mobile devices and the apps they love. Parents are looking for a better way to interact with their children and why not use the technology they love to help bring them together with the whole family. If EXIM Games can offer a solution to this issue, parents will be able to have time with their children and play a good to honest board game. Families need something to entice their children to play a family board game.

xPirate brings family and friends together with a board game that has that technology appeal to keep the kids fully interested and engaged. xPirate brings the cool factor to the board game industry where in the past they have tried to meet this demand with cheap electronic interfaces that are basic and inflexible. With the help of Apple’s iTunes Store, EXIM Games has a large audience for promotion of the xPirate product offering and can track usage and bring new games and functionality to life.

Competitive Overview:

xPirate is a unique game and EXIM Games is unique in its approach to the game industry, with a game that does not really fit exactly into a specific game category. Is xPirate an electronic game, an app or a game board? EXIM Games is working to create a gaming experience for young children; that is entertaining, educational and thoroughly fun! There is competition, there is one game in the industry that has an interface with an iPad but it was released after xPirate and they don’t have the ability to integrate with multiple mobile devices, like an iPhone. The rest of the competition is really other mobile games that are only on the mobile device, traditional board games with or without electronic features and other games like handheld or console games similar to the Wii.

EXIM Game’s whole focus will be in this new sector of game boards and integrated mobile devices. EXIM Games filed for a Patent over two years ago for this integrated concept and are close to receiving the final patent. This patent will give even more protection from the completion in the market. EXIM Games also received an award last year, the “2012 Game of the Year Award” from Creative Child Magazine. This was based on an interview at the 2012 Chicago Toy and Game Show in Chicago, Illinois. Subsequent to this interview, Creative Child Magazine tested xPirate with a number of families and awarded it this prestigious award.

EXIM Games was first to market with this idea and introduced the xPirate Game concept at the 2010 GenCon show in Indiana. At this point the iPhone was King and iPad and Android devices had not taken off yet. EXIM Games’ booth had constant lines with people checking out xPirate, including Hasbro and other large game companies. There were even representatives’ from many game companies at the EXIM Games’ booth taking pictures. In December 2011 EXIM Games was the first to release a board game with integration to mobile devices. The first xPirate production game was sold at the Chicago Toy and Game Show in Chicago, Illinois. EXIM Games still remains the only company to offer a fully integrated game board solution for multiple mobile devises.

Benefits EXIM Games Business and xPirate Product Provide:

EXIM Games is focused on the family and bringing the family together around a board game through the use of integrated mobile technology. xPirate is EXIM Games’ first offering around this concept. EXIM Games will initially be focused on children with some of the kid-friendly FEAR factor around initial game concepts. xPirate is about pirates obviously but the approach is still more of a kid-friendly game concept, not too scary. As mentioned before, xPirate will bring a lot of the game play to the mobile device, where players interact with the mobile device for moves and battles and the game board is used for moving player pieces and following path of play. The interaction around the board game is what makes xPirate more entertaining and family oriented.

The integration allows families to use multiple devices on the game board such as an iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and iPad Mini. Game setup is done on the device, games can be saved and player information can be saved. One of the great things about having everything managed through the mobile device is that players of all ages play with different levels of complexity or difficulty. Adults can play on high complexity while a 6 year old could be playing at a low complexity. They are playing the same game but the game play is easier for the low complexity player. The medium and lower complexity settings also allow for faster game play if all players are playing on the same level. This is called “Multi-Complexity” game play. This is one great advantage offered to families with differing aged children. Games can also be transferred from one device to another via the “Bump” app.

Marketing Strategy:

Getting the word out isn’t easy! If a tree falls in the woods and there is no one around to hear it, how does anyone know the tree fell? Simply stated, EXIM Games needs to let the world know about xPirate and what EXIM Games is all about. Word of mouth only goes so far and without a large organization promoting a product, it can be hard to reach your target market. EXIM Games has relied on word of mouth in the past, blogs and some online retailer representation but this has not helped xPirate to be well known.

Exim Games has launched a strong PR strategy to make the masses aware of the xPirate Game. Exim Games has embarked on a 4 month Best Products media blitz in the past with the nationally recognized firm, Orca Communications (www.orcacommunications.com) made up of all former members of the media. These Best Products campaigns have brought renowned editors, producers, and reporters unique and innovative products for over a decade. Quality PR brings exposure, bragging rights, and gravitas to a company that is second-to-none. It is far superior to advertising as it comes with an inherent sense of a 3rd party endorsement. Orca will also be pursuing many online outlets that will provide back links to EXIM Games and therefore increase overall search engine optimization (SEO).

Online retailers are another area of focus for EXIM Games. This has been a way to get the exposure for xPirate on different online stores. This online exposure, along with the www.eximgames.com website has been the main source for sales and promotion so far. EXIM Games needs to expand its presence and with the help of Orca Communications and the online exposure, EXIM Games will gain more of a following. At this point, xPirate is already offered on Amazon, Sears and a few other reseller sites.

The Chicago Toy and Game Show (ChiTag) is a great place to showcase a board game like xPirate. This November will be the second year that EXIM Games has been in attendance. This is a way to get exposure to customers, retailers and the press. xPirate had its first debut at ChiTag in 2011 with some great exposure, but that only last so long. This show is great but an expensive way to get exposure.

Apple iTunes store is of course a key area of focus for xPirate. This is where the app is downloaded and can be promoted. App promotion through this medium will help to sell more games and get more exposure. In-app purchases for upgrades or additional game offerings are also a potential with Apple iTunes store. There are many ways to promote xPirate and all of these are being looked at for consideration as EXIM Games moves forward.

Team Qualification for Launching Business:

EXIM Games’ team is made up of 4 key partners, with the majority of ownership being women, as well as partners including the following: web development, app development, public relations, legal and accounting. This infrastructure of support is what enables EXIM Games, as an organization, to remain strong. The team also holds MBAs from Wright State University and the University of Dayton. EXIM Games is family focused, with team members having children in the younger age group. The families have been involved and enjoy being part of this great game, xPirate. Strong family and strong teams are what make EXIM Games successful.

Investment needed in EXIM Games is around $150,000 at a minimum to start with. This is needed to cover additional app development cost for xPirate and other new games. The main focus for the funds will be to extend our Media Campaign on a national basis. We will hire the right firms to expand our marketing development. Our initial limited media blitz was extremely successful and has provided us with the knowledge that if we can expand the campaign the results should be the same just on a much larger scale.
