My name is Paul Roman Martinez, and
I’ve been working on The Adventures of the 19XX since 2009. I do all of the art and writing for this series, and I self publish it as well! I used to work as a graphic designer at a tiny company, but now my full-time job is writing and illustrating my books. Maybe someday I can hire someone to help me. But until then, it’s just me!
What is The Adventures of the 19XX?
The 19XX is a series about a secret organization in the 1930s trying to prevent WWII from happening. They’ve seen the future and know the horrors of war are coming. Evil groups also know the war is coming, and they are doing everything they can to make sure they win that war. But what if the war is our fate? How can we fight against the inevitable? The series starts in 1933 and ends in 1939. Six books will follow the secret group of heroes known as the 19XX and explore the meaning of fate. Each book is a self contained, high-flying adventure, and future volumes build toward a global showdown between good and evil. Book One and Book Two are already completed and available in this Kickstarter.
Book One in the series was originally released in 2011. For this book, I earned a nomination for the Russ Manning Most Promising Newcomer Award which is handed out annually at San Diego Comic-Con’s Eisner Awards. That edition sold out during my last kickstarter campaign, and since then, I have redesigned the entire book with new artwork, over 10 new pages, a newly edited story, and a new Secret Files of the 19XX. The Secret files of the 19XX was originally designed as a half-letter sized companion book to the main series. The original had dossiers on all the main characters appearing in Book One and was about 47 pages. The newly revised Secret Files has over 84 pages of material. This includes some great illustrated short stories that delve deeper into the origins of the 19XX and some articles about gadgets, machines, and life in the diesel age!

BOOK ONE—Rise of the Black Faun Alpha 1933 Edition
This new printing of the book is standard comic book size turned horizontal. It has a hardbound cover with a debossed cloth wrap-around spine. This is the first 19XX adventure and is a 120-page, self contained story. In this volume, the group welcomes a new crew member who will someday play a very important role. Their plans are quickly derailed by an organization called The Order of the Black Faun. The 19XX then travels across the United States looking for clues so they can prevent the Black Faun from implementing their mysterious plan.

Its retail price when released will be $20.
BOOK TWO—Montezuma: 1934
The second book in the 19XX series takes the group to Mexico. This book utilizes the same hardcover format with a cloth spine. It is 136 pages. For those of you who already own Book Two, I’ve offered the option of a brand new iPad bag instead. If you choose that option, make sure and send me a message!

What's in the Art Book?
This is brand new. I had never thought of doing an art book until several people at conventions asked me about it. And in the course of doing conventions over the last year, I ended up buying a few art books myself from people I admire. I thought this kickstarter would be a great place to release the digital version. If this kickstarter does really well, there is a potential for a hardbound physical edition at 8.5” x 11.”
This book contains a bit of history about how I got where I am today. It includes concert posters, concept sketches, prints, t-shirt designs, and other art. Each section of the book contains detailed facts about the pieces and my steps in the creative process. The book also includes a breakdown of a brand new, never before seen print with snapshots taken at each phase of illustration, from rough pencil sketch to final colors.
The Art of Paul Roman Martinez: Building the World of the 19XX, 92 pages, digital .pdf
If this book goes to print, the retail price will probably be about $30 for a hardcover copy.
Why use kickstarter to raise funds?
I self publish The Adventures of the 19XX series, which means I pay for all costs myself. The first book sold out of its first print run, which is fantastic! But now I need to reprint it. I know I can sell every copy, it just takes time. If I wasn’t sure of that, I wouldn’t be asking you guys for help! That’s why I self-financed my first printing—to make sure this project was something people wanted to see. It is possible to make a living self publishing; the problem is that printing one run of the main book and one companion book costs around $17,000. It may take me a couple years to sell all of those books, but I have to pay for them now! So that’s where Kickstarter comes in. It’s up to everybody here to make this happen! Remember, if we don’t reach our funding goal, then I don’t get anything. So if you believe in this project and want to see me finish the series, don’t be afraid to share this page with your friends!
"In the 19XX, Paul Roman Martinez creates an entire world filled with bigger-than-life heroics, super-scientific mechanics and high-octane fun! Some might call this "dieselpunk," or "neo pulp," but the 19XX is far too original to fall into obvious categories. It's utterly new and completely unlike anything you've ever seen. Read it and love it!"
-Brian Augustyn Writer, Gotham by Gaslight,
"The 19XX is the most imaginative, accurate and beautiful book you’ve never ever heard of. While I have a deep an undying love of the oxymoron called historical fiction, all comic fans who appreciate a well-crafted and meaty (140+ pages) tale of the Great Generation during their heyday will find something to love in 19XX."
-Rob Patey, Ain't it Cool News
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
I am self published and I have no collaborators aside from my wife who helps me edit my text. I have already risked so much to get here, I sold my car, maxed out my credit cards, and quit my job. That means all the risk falls on me, if I don't succeed then it was my failure. If this all works out then it will be because of everyone that has taken a chance on me and my books .
But until the final book gets released I have to pay for a lot of printing. I have to deal with book manufacturers, T-shirt printers, patch makers and hope they all deliver on time. I have to buy a lot of books with no guarantee of ever selling them. After a year of doing shows, selling out of my first printing, and talking to fans I have faith in myself and faith in this project. As a self publisher, every year I will have to risk everything I have to print another set of books. And I'm ready for that risk.
Yes! I cut a piece of cardboard 7.5" wide x 11" high and placed it in the bag. It fit fine. That size is larger than most touch tablets.
Yes! All hardcover books will be signed!
