UPDATE - we reached funding! But we have plenty more rewards ready to ship in time for Christmas!
Thanks to the support of our amazing backers, we have reached our initial funding goal and we are thrilled by that! We are not going to stop here, however, as we have plenty of more rewards which can make their way under your Christmas tree in time for the holidays!
Please, help us to spread the word, so we can commission as much work as possible to our lovely knitters! Do share this page on Facebook and Twitter, to your running or cycling club or just to your friends. We will love you for it!
On The Glo - reflective knitwear that lights up your regular winter cover-ups!
We all love big scarves, hats and gloves during the winter. We love a lot less day-glow vests and jackets to keep us visible on dark roads while we cycle, run or walk our dog.
On The Glo was born to address this: keeping you safer on the roads while wearing something that you are happy walking into school, a friend's house or the office with.
All our products are made with a special wool with a reflective thread spun into it: incognito during daylight, they glow in the headlights! Whether you cycle, run, hike or are just addicted to selfies, you will love our super soft reflective beanies, snoods and pom-poms!
We have a good number of products available for Christmas delivery, and we are more than happy to produce a lot more and deliver it to you in early 2016.
Our reflective pom-pom, available in black, grey, white, yellow, orange, pink, red, burgundy, purple, navy, baby blue, mint and forest green. All our pom-poms are detachable, so you can hook it to anything you like.
£5 each - 150 available for Christmas delivery
Our warm reflective ear-band, available in red, burgundy, purple, navy, baby blue, mint and forest green.
£16 each - 30 available for Christmas delivery

If it sounds like a secret society, it is because it is made with our finest yarn, including double the reflective power of NightCap, in a wonderful cabled pattern. The coordinated detachable pom-pom is included and it is available in 6 awesome colours: black, grey, white, yellow, orange, pink.
£30 each - 99 available for Christmas delivery
The TUNNEL VISION
Our soft chunky snood, available in all colours of Halo, available in red, burgundy, purple, navy, baby blue, mint and green.
£45 each - 19 available for Christmas delivery
Our richest snood, made of the same soft yarn as the IlluminHat and available in the same cabled patter and colours: black, grey, white, yellow, orange, pink. Choose grey and no one will ever spot the reflective thread!
£50 each - 42 available for Christmas delivery
Want more? We also have for 2016 delivery:
CAT'S EYE - yes, we are giving reflective power to your four-legged doggie friend via this limited custom reward. Being close to the ground, they are often the ones in need to be seen the most! All colours of the Halo available.
INVIZ HIGH-VIZ - a super special limited custom reward: a high (in)visibility jumper we are going to design with you in any of the yarns available for IlluminHat: black, grey, white, yellow, orange, pink. We will agree on colours and design and we will tailor it to your size!
The On The Glo range doesn't actually glow in the dark: it reflects light, instead. We have harnessed retro-reflective technology for our project. This means that, when hit by car headlights or by the flash of a camera, your beanie or snood will shine back exclusively towards the light source. In other words, the driver will see you shine, but everyone else will not notice it. You will only glow when you need to be seen (or when you are taking a flash selfie!).
The NightCap beanie below is the same in both photographs: in the first, it glows back towards the light source, but in the second, it is illuminated by a streetlight at a different angle and the reflective thread remains invisible.
In the image below you can see our IlluminHat and Tunnel Vision at work: the IlluminHat and Luminaire have twice the amount of reflective thread than the NightCap and Tunnel Vision.
Our yarn close up: can you spot the reflective thread? Once knitted, it becomes much harder to spot, especially in grey.
On The Glo is not just extraordinary knitwear. It’s manufacturing is extraordinary, too! Each item is hand-knitted in the rural Philippines, by a group of women from a traditional community of farmers, whose economy is endangered by foreign commercial competition.
To avoid forced emigration and stay where they belong, these incredible local women have picked up a millennia old tradition -knitting- thanks to a another overfunded KickStarter project, Ricefield Collective, which you backed in 2013. You can read more about our knitters on our website. Picking up where they left, thanks to On the Glo, the communitiy in Ifugao can have a future.
All On The Glo products are available in a range of colours.
The Halo, NightCap, Tunnel Vision and Cat's Eye are available in red, burgundy, purple, navy, baby blue, mint and forest green. This yarn is vegan! No wool in this one, for those who have ruled out all animal products! It is still super thick, soft and comforting.
The IlluminHat, Luminaire and Inviz High-Viz are available in pink, orange, white, grey and black. The splendid citrine yellow will be available for 2016 delivery. The Lumenz, instead, is available in pink, orange, white and grey. This yarn is a wonderful wool blend: it is our softest, most luxurious yarn!
The L.E.D. pom-poms are available in all colours.
If you are at all familiar with KickStarter, you will agree with us that our shipping costs are amongst the lowest out there. This is because all On The Glo rewards will be shipped with standard mail, but you can request signed and/or tracked shipment if you prefer. Just add £2 extra to your pledge if you are located within the UK or add £5 extra if your reward is getting shipped anywhere else. Also remember to mention you have purchased signed/tracked shipping in the questionnaire you will receive after the project ends.
Knitting, cycling, crisp winter nights: all things we love. At times one's loves are as they are: separately great. But at other times, we are given the rare opportunity to merge things, and that is when weird and wonderful hybrids are born... After a few years of repairing people's bikes at Hackney Bike Workshop, reflective knitwear was born from the realisation that cyclists often wear all black or dark jackets... and hardly ever a reflective vest. Another thing stuck: the average cyclist wears hardly any of the technical sportswear shops like to sell. Their attire is much more casual: big scarves, hats and gloves during the winter, regular t-shirts during the summer. Any chance to make these cyclist more visible on the road? Winter darkness is everywhere: could runners, children, skateboarders, pedestrians, dog walkers and even dogs be made more visible on our streets? A huge number of yarn and road tests later, the answer is a loud yes. Making it happen ethically, however, was on top of our priority lists. We believe knitting is a craft so we took the hard decision to get all our products hand-knitted and scouted the best people to do it. We are so happy that On The Glo is a reality now, but to make it fully operational and sustainable we need your help. Pledge for our rewards and you will keep yourself safer while helping a community in need.
We thought you may want to hear what they say about us: here are a few quotes from reviews in the publications below.
Below are the publications which have spoken about us so far:
On The Glo would like to thank all those who have been involved in this process so far: all our models, music composers, filming directors and editors, project launch, flier distribution, social media and marketing crew, as well as everyone in the Philippines. You have become too many to mention here, but please receive the biggest thank you from us for helping us bring this project to life.
Risks and challenges
Delays - as mentioned, to test the project we have already started knitting with the women in Ifugao. This is a great advantage, as we have a number of items ready for dispatch and we can estimate well how long it will take to get the rest knitted. All of the items marked for Christmas delivery have already been crafted, so we just need to ship them out to you as soon as you tell us where to, after the project ends in late November and they should be with you well in time for Christmas. Should the project be largely over-funded, our timeline may stretch somewhat, but we will make due announcement in the lucky event this actually happens.
Running out of yarn - this problem is applicable just to what will be delivered in 2016 (as we have already knitted everything for Christmas delivery). In case you guys really like On The Glo, we may hear from our supply chain that yarn has run out in that particular colour and weight. Are we scared about this possibility? Not at all! So far, it has just been matter of waiting a few days for the yarn to come back in stock, so we do not foresee big bumps in the road because of it. In future stages of development of On The Glo, the plan is to source recycled yarn and having lots of backing means we can start on that process sooner. We will work with our suppliers until we can, and we are more than likely to complete the project with them: if the yarn fountains runs dry, however, it will only be for a short while.
Sizing issues - so, you are worried that your coveted IlluminHat is not going to fit. Well, we have tested our hats on a range of heads until we got to the point that not one person came back to say "it's too small/big, I couldn't wear it". Nevertheless, we are offering two sizes for both NightCap and IllumintHat, just in case. Halo also has a great stretch so it will sit snug on your head regardless of whether it is big or small. The children beanies are smaller and knitted with our stretchiest pattern, to allow for a variety of ages (and if you are an adult and you think your head is really tiny, this may be the one for you!). The snoods are just perfect regardless!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
