Spaceman Adventure is a strategy board game for 3 or more players. I designed the game in 2012 (you can read about the design process in a four-part series I wrote). The game was on the back burner as I worked on Cult Classic, my previous Kickstarter campaign. Now that graduate school is over and I have some time, I'm ready to get Spaceman Adventure off the ground! I'm raising money to hire an illustrator to provide excellent retro sci-fi art for the game and to make the first order of game copies.
The bizarre alien planet of Tronoe-17 has just been discovered to be rich in valuable power crystals. Both the Galaxia Federation and Solari Alliance have sent expeditions to the surface to collect these rare treasures. However, the planet is inhabited by the Slimezoids, a mysterious alien race. Do you have what it takes to reap the rewards in this thrilling space adventure?
Well, that's the story. The game is based on what is called a "bimatrix game" where rewards are displayed in a table and one player chooses the row while the other player chooses the column. But this game has a whole lot of twists to it. Firstly, players have an opportunity to change the rewards in the game. Secondly, players get to choose from multiple characters who all earn points in different ways. Your strategy must depend on what you know your opponents are doing, what you think they will do, what you think they think you will do, and so on...
Every round of the game, play begins with a game board like this:
Red Commander secretly chooses whether to play in the alpha or beta row while Blue Commander secretly chooses the column. Players reveal their choices and each player earns points equal to the number of spacemen of their color. However, first players get to choose and play cards which modify the game board - add or remove spacemen, move them around, etc. Then players get to choose their role: Blue or Red Commander, Gambler, Saboteur, Mountain King, etc. Each role earns points in a different way after the commanders have chosen their strategies.
My artist has already produced some great work which will be giving the game that retro pulp comic feel and I'm excited to raise the money to fund all of the illustrations. Here are a few he's done so far:
The Produced Game
Backers above the Space Cadet level will all receive a copy of the game when it is finished. The game components will be:
- 1 10"x10" game board
- 1 deck of 50 cards
- 15 of each: blue and red spacemen, green aliens (wooden)
- 30 of each: purple and white crystals (plastic)
- 1 rocket (round leader token)
- Game rules & box
The deluxe version of the game will include plastic figures to replace the generic wooden meeples!
Risks and challenges
The work that needs to be done is primarily illustration and then graphic design for the cards and game board. Delays can occur of course, but I am trying to budget time to allow for some of these inevitable delays. The game itself, though, has been tested and re-tested and I'm very happy with the game itself - it is a lot of fun!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
