Cult Classic is a card game I created a number of years ago. It is a humorous, light strategy game for 2-6 players, 30-60 minutes in length. The goal of the game is to be the first cult to reach 10 points, becoming the most powerful cult on the block.
The players each take on the role of a fledgling cult leader. At the beginning of the game you have nothing, just your charismatic personality. The game has 6 cult leader cards, each with its own special power and ideological focus.
As the game progresses you may gain cards representing beliefs that your cult adheres to as well as material assets you've managed to get your mitts on. The beliefs may be in line with your leader or completely unrelated - just watch out for contradictions!
All this brings us to what cults care about the most: attracting followers! by carefully selecting your beliefs you can focus your attention on certain types of followers. Do you want to get the loony UFO fanatics like the Geeky Trekkies or perhaps your satirical cult will bring in the Jaded Hipsters? Some of the followers are interested in different types of cults, like the Trippy Hippies. And if you're lucky you may be able to snag a celebrity, helping to lure in more followers!
The cultivation of followers is a major activity in this game, and there are plenty of cards to help you get the job done: You can give out "Free Candy", run a "Late-Nite Infomercial" or "Spread Rumors" about your opponents' cults. In the end only the most cultastic will win!
This game has been in development for many years. I've worked on it off and on. Recently I went through the effort of illustrating the cards and I now have a product that I am proud of! The next step is a thorough testing of the game and it will be ready for production.
If we're able to exceed the original goal of $3000 funding for Cult Classic, I'll be giving extra rewards to backers in the form of 18 card mini expansion packs!
$5000: Temples and Trouble expansion pack includes 6 holy temples, and a few more assets, action cards and cultivation cards! All backers of $20 or more will receive this expansion pack! The $35 backers (Cult Member Double) will receive two expansion packs, and if we reach the higher stretch goals, they don't have to be the same.
$7000: Fanatic Followers expansion pack includes 6 new celebrities and 12 more basic followers to add more flavor to the game. $20 backers will be able to choose between this pack and the Temples pack. $50 backers and up will receive both this pack and the Temples pack.
$9000: Aberrant Aspirations expansion pack includes a new type of card, the Aspiration card. Aspirations give each player a chance to earn extra points by achieving the goals set out on the card. $20 backers will receive their choice of all three expansions, $50 backers will be able to choose two out of the three, while $75 backers will get all three expansions.
Risks and challenges
The major obstacle is getting the game thoroughly tested. I need to make sure all of the kinks are worked out. This means clarifying text on the cards, making the rules crystal clear, and fixing any typos or mistakes that may have cropped up.
I'm asking 10 interested backers to serve as testers - you will get a free copy of the beta game now, a thank you in the rulesheet and a copy of the finished game when it's completed.
The printer I have makes a very good product, so the printing is not going to be a challenge.
