About this project
Hello Beautiful Person!
I'm thrilled to be launching my 4th annual summer Kickstarter project--this time to create a high quality, limited edition deck of playing cards that you can use three different ways to provide hours of imaginative entertainment. If you're just finding out about this project, be sure to look at my updates to see even newer photos as this deck evolves!
If you missed this Kickstarter campaign, no worries! I'll be selling decks while supplies last. Click here for details on where to find 'em!
This deck will be printed by the United States Playing Card Company, makers of the Bicycle Decks. The run will be 2500 decks, and your support of this Kickstarter campaign will help me cover the costs of printing, photography, and the time to create the 57 original pieces of art for the designs on each card face, back, and tuck box.
I've gotten a start on this project so I can give you a taste of how it will look and feel, but my plan is to create all of the artwork this summer to have the decks ready to ship to you by December of this year. As with my past Kickstarter campaigns, I will update you weekly with photos and news on how each component of this project evolves.
Each Bunny with a Toolbelt playing card deck will always include:
- Fifty-two playing cards and two jokers – all with original artwork. This can be used as a traditional playing card deck, or use the animals as inspiration for storytelling.
- Paper insert with information on how you can also use this deck for fortune telling.
- Two bonus cards that form a two-sided butterfly diptych.
- High quality printing by the United States Playing Card Company (USPC) on Bicycle playing card stock with an Embossed Finish.
- 100# paper tuck box with full printing of the pattern created for the card backs.
The backs of each card, and the front of the tuck box will feature my homage to the classic Bicycle blue and white design. Rather than a bicycle rider, my version will be bunnies with tools. Kickstarter backers may choose to purchase prints of this design, and one lucky backer can own the original 20" artwork.
I also hand cut my letters, numbers and symbols for this deck so this tiny detail would also have a handmade touch.
Yes, I will be offering uncut sheets as part of this Kickstarter campaign!!
What's an uncut sheet? It's the term used to describe the high-quality deck as a single piece of 100# paper before it's cut into all the cards. One side of the sheet shows all of the card backs, and the other is the card faces with all of the animals. This would make a beautiful framed piece of art.
Since the figures for this deck are so labor-intensive, it's impossible for me to show you exactly what the uncut sheet will look like at this point. To give the best possible idea, I mapped out how my card deck will as it will appear in the uncut sheet:
My Kickstarter video shows these drawings a bit closer so you can see if your favorite critter is there.
Uncut sheets are highly collectible and I am only offering them for a limited time. If you prefer to choose a pledge level that doesn't include an uncut sheet, I will make them available them for a very limited time via my Etsy site and notify all backers of this when it happens.
I also have pledge levels where you can purchase one or more high quality 8x10" prints of any card face, including the Bicycle homage back.
The two butterfly diptych have their own reward levels.
As soon as I've finalized the design for the deck and sent it off to the printers, I'll mount each original figure on top of a painted wood box that contains two card decks for my top tier backer rewards. Inside the lid will be a signed playing card of that figure, a tiny pad of paper and pencil, and the accordion folded instructions on how to use your card deck for fortune telling. (Please see update #10 for more information on this box)
I have created a limited edition King or Queen of Hearts Bunny design so that backers can pair a handmade piece a deck of cards for a lovely reward at the $45 pledge level, shipped straight to your doorstep. Each Bunny sculpture will be personally made by me, and the bottom will be signed and dated. You can choose from one of five colors:
At the $95 level, I will mount your bunny onto a painted wood box.
Or if you want a playing card-themed homage to your own furry best friend, I can create a King/Queen of hearts version of your pet!
For a little bit more, this figure can also be mounted onto a card box with all the aforementioned goodies inside.
Or if you'd rather just have a simple version of your pet on that box, that can also be arranged..... (please note that the box will be the square one shown in the previous images)
Kickstarter backers can add $10 per additional card deck, $15 per 8x10 print, and $35 per uncut sheet to any pledge level. Just be ready to remind me later on when the surveys go out what you wanted!!
Thank you so much for taking the time to look at my Kickstarter project page. I'm excited to spend another summer in my studio sharing a project with you.
Risks and challenges
This is the fourth major Kickstarter project I will have worked on, and so far have an excellent track record in completing my projects on time. If there are any delays in my anticipated schedule, I will contact backers in October to figure out how to make you happy if you are purchasing this for holiday gifts. I have been making my living for over 20 years as an artist and have shipped thousands of packages in a timely fashion with very little problems. Thank you so much for helping me make this idea happen!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
I love that people have been doing this for the past few years and am scheduling my project to accommodate this. Currently, my plan is to have the cards to the printers in September so that they'll be ready by the middle of November. If all goes well, I am hoping everyone will have their rewards before December even begins.
Yes--you can add $10 per additional card deck, $15 per 8x10 print, and $35 per uncut sheet to any pledge level. Just be ready to remind me later on when the surveys go out what you wanted!!
I make a lot of custom pet figures for people, and have worked out a pretty good system on my website for you to give me all the information I need. (http://www.bunnywithatoolbelt.com/custom-pets)
Once I've gotten past the stage of sending my artwork off to the printers for this project—sometime in September--I'll then be able to focus on creating these custom rewards. Since I will be working in a tight timeline to get these figures shipped by December, I strongly encourage you to get your images together in the meantime that show your pet in a standing position from all angles AND make a list of all distinctive markings that you want to see in your figure. This is another challenging part of my Kickstarter campaigns, so I really appreciate your help in getting me the most accurate information possible.
One of the most challenging parts of letting Kickstarter backers purchase the original work from my projects is the selection process. My best advice to you is to pledge early so you get to pick from a wider selection! I've followed this system in the past, which seems to work: When the animals are completed, I set up a special photo album online and send that link to the backers, asking them to pick their top 5-10 choices. The earliest backer gets first pick, and I move down the list chronologically. I think I'll break down the list into thirds this time so the people who pledged last know what's still available.
In the past, I have posted weekly or bi-weekly updates with photos and descriptions of my progress on Kickstarter projects. Many of my updates are for public consumption, but every once in a while, I'll post something that's just for backers only. These updates are sent directly to your email inbox if you are a backer and haven't blocked your mail from Kickstarter in your settings on the Kickstarter website. (You might also want to make sure your email doesn't think it's spam!) If you never received a confirmation email from Kickstarter, you may not have completed the pledge form, so make sure you do that before July!
I hope to do more alphabet books in the future! I signed with a literary agent early this year and my goal is to find a publisher for these books so I can have wider distribution.
At this point, I think they will retail around $15, and that won't even include shipping, so grab yours at these early bird prices!
Awww....sure, I can do that. Please add $5 to orders for playing card decks or 8x10 prints, and $10 for uncut sheets or handmade art rewards. Unless you want the big card back or the butterflies--contact me for a shipping estimate for those. Thanks!
