I am a photographer who is passionate about communicating the fundamental normality and everyday competence of people with disabilities.
This project is very close to my own heart as the concept came from when my father was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Throughout these years I have had first-hand experience with disability and I believe that the connotations so widely considered as fact are incorrect. Capability is a photographic series about the strength and power of individuals with prosthetics or amputations. Questioning the definition of ‘Disability’ and how they are presented within the UK, the project focuses on collaborating with a group of individuals who have either been born without a limb or lost one. This project depicts their amazing capabilities and remarkable strength.
The project will be a collection of stories from each model and showing them with their amputations and prosthetics on display. To make this project a reality, I will be travelling around the UK to each model, spending a day with them to explore their strength through an activity of their choice.
‘Disability’ by definition, refers to a deficiency or dysfunction and as such evokes negative associations. Yet, although all the people portrayed here, lack a limb, they do not consider themselves as less able than others. Each participant asserts that they are just as capable and as strong as any other person.
This project will end up as the first edition of a series of books I will be creating, which will cover all aspects of capability within the disabled community. Throughout the series of books created, a small donation will go to the Air Ambulance on behalf of Natalie Griffiths who was the first model in the series, in which the air ambulance saved her life.
Thank you to all who support this project and the support of the community involved. This is a huge dream of mine to produce photo-books and tell these stories, it's a pleasure to have this opportunity.
Risks and challenges
Due to travelling and post-production, the main deadline of production date and expected delivery is not set in stone and will be as organic at the project itself. I want to give you and the models the best quality books and images but during these times I will keep you all up to date though Instagram and my website.
No matter what, you will receive what you have pledged for and I will ensure that they will be the best quality! Thank you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
