About this project
Moa is a fantasy interpretation of the clash between the original inhabitants of New Zealand and the wave of settlers from over the seas. The inhabitants are birds, re-imagined with human traits. Thus they talk, wear clothes and use tools.
The invaders are a motley bunch made up of dogs, possums, rats and weasels. Each mammalian invader has its own characteristics - the dogs are more peaceable, but powerful if pushed to fight, while the weasel is rapacious, attacking whenever possible.
You control tribes of birds, and seek to control as much of the board as possible.

Why should you pledge for this game on Kickstarter? There are several reasons!
The pledge amount is at least 20% off SRP of $50 USD. Some of the stretch goals are Kickstarter promos, meaning they won't be in the games we ship to retail. Our games would not get made without Kickstarter. We run on narrow margins and rely on crowdfunding to help us get each game made. Additionally, Kickstarter is a bellwether that tells us which games should be made, and which should not. (Okay, so far all of our Kickstarters have been turned into games!)
The base Kickstarter version of the game will include components not available in the retail version of the game:
Meet the Birds
The bird 'tribes' are represented by the hands of cards each player is dealt. Different birds provide different talents to the tribe.
The Eagle is a fierce fighter...
Kakapo is a mystic...
And Moa holds the tribe together with a combination of talents...
There are eight different birds in all, and each brings unique skills to the tribe.
How to Play
A draft version of the rules can be found here. It's not pretty yet, but you'll learn how to play!
Moa is played in a slice of New Zealand, broken into 12 territories.
There are two periods in the game; each consists of seven rounds.
Players are dealt a hand of nine bird cards at the start of each period which become the players' tribes. A tribe must last a player for all seven rounds, so careful decisions must be made about when and how to play each bird.
Two new terrain cards are revealed at the start of each round. These dictate which zones players can act in that round, whether mammals appear or attack, or the volcano marker moves.
Actions include various ways for bird tribes to take control of territories.
Birds can be placed into territories with one of the two active terrain types, one bird per icon spent.
Leaders break ties when deciding which player controls a territory. Like other actions, leaders can only be placed into territories with one of the two active terrain types.
Terrain cards can cause mammals to invade territories. Players can wrestle control back by attacking mammal-controlled zones, and take control of the territory by placing their own birds.
The player keeps the mammal token for end-of-period scoring.
Other actions include:
- Buy karakia tile - the player can buy one or two powerful tiles for use in a future round.
- Pass - players that pass can play again in future rounds.

Kickstarter project creators must be extremely sensitive with shipping costs - charge too little and you run the risk of running out of money before you can ship all of the pledges.
We have done several Kickstarter projects, and have formed international partnerships that can provide the best value.
Postage prices increase annually, and we need to also consider freight costs to get the games to our warehouse and fulfillment houses around the world.
The shipping costs in this spreadsheet reflect our best effort a keeping shipping as low as we can for you while ensuring we don't run into financial trouble. Note that these prices are less than our actual costs.
Don't pay for shipping as part of your pledge! We'll provide an avenue for payment after the project has completed.

Risks and challenges
APE Games has successfully run and delivered all of our Kickstarter projects. We have a dedicated staff that works year-round packing and shipping orders. We use fulfillment companies for shipping when we have a large number of orders to ship in a short period of time, usually for overseas fulfillment.
One concern is that shipping prices increase dramatically before we're able to get this game to backers. That would be unfortunate, but it usually happens at the beginning of the year, and this project will ship in the same year.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
