This is a very unique, limited-edition, super-special, high-quality and one-of-a kind book. It is a wordless and purely visual experience. This is an artist's book and called: Florae: Inquiries into imperceptible and observable landscapes
The success of my first book?
This is my second artist’s book funded through Kickstarter. The first book was published in 2016 and called How Painting Works. This book found its way into several important artists' book collections: The Smithsonian, The Getty, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, but also was collected by artists, designers, and many others, internationally, too! A limited edition of 150 copies, How Painting Works played with ideas of abstract painting and line drawing and also the tension between an image and a painted abstraction on each page. The wide-ranging color abstractions are actually cut-outs from my paper palettes made during my painting practice (as I mix paint with palette knives onto these paper palettes). These painted cut-outs are also found in my new book, Florae.
What is the new book about?
Florae is about our landscapes; some we see, some we visit, some viewed through microscopes and other devices. It is about the abundant, beautiful, odd and curious plant-like life everywhere. The book’s subtitle, Inquiries into imperceptible and observable landscapes, is a meditation on observing our natural world.
Why do this?
Over the years, I have been ruminating on landscapes, both those I see and those I imagine from description. My family and I take long camping trips into the California wilderness and some of the pages of this book are observations of these stunning deserts, badlands, chaparral scrublands and coastal woodlands. Reading John Muir, who was an astounding explorer of Alaska, California and, most famously, Yosemite as well as a passionate translator of these wild places into essays, I understood his steadfast belief in National Parks as place of awe and transcendence for everyone.
There are other landscapes to consider. While doing research on the color blue, I was surprised to find the very early cyanotypes of the botanist, Anna Atkins, whose ghostly, beautiful, and strangely arresting underwater algae appeared on deep sea-blue photographic prints. I also encountered Anton Van Leeuvenhoek, who, by inventing a rudimentary microscopic lens, was the first person to see microscopic flora. Now, outer-worldly descriptions and images of tiny organisms are everywhere and we know about the microscopic landscapes, both on the outside of us and the inside of us as well.
I re-read Walden by Henry David Thoreau, who lived, alone, in a small hut by Walden pond in the Concord, Massachusetts forest for two years, two months and two days in order to escape what he called a “quiet desperation” that most people experience in city life. What does it means to live in such a landscape? Acute awareness of the natural world. Intense wonder, lucid thoughts and philosophical insights. What comes of all this? Looking at and thinking about these diverse landscapes, I recorded my own observations and visions of flora.
THE BOOK ITSELF...
Florae will be comprised of 80 pages without any text except for the colophon at the end of the book. The book will be a facsimile, that is, the colors will match the original collages and the book will be the actual size (9 x 12 inches) of those same works. The same local expert printing press in Pasadena, which specializes in artists’ books and made my first book, will also make my second book as well. It will be printed in a limited edition of 150 with each copy numbered and signed by me.
Now, I just need your help to have it printed. The pieces have been photographed, the book has been laid out and designed, and it is ready for the press. Since this is the second time I am printing, the timing should be much more accurate. The funding that I’m seeking for this project is to pay for the printing of this book. Printing high quality artists’ books, even in small quantities, is very expensive for individuals with limited means (a.k.a. art teachers). This is the reason for the Kickstarter campaign! Below I have outlined rewards for your donation and ANY amount will be greatly appreciated!!! I hope that you will support this book. Thank you very much for reading this.
