We are on a quest to educate the next generation of small scale organic farmers! Our education center currently accepts students from all over the world who want to learn the art and the business of small scale agriculture. We recognize that as the local food movement grows, we’re going to need more local farmers. If we want to feed everyone from local sources, it will take upwards of 30 million farmers. Currently, we only have ½ million. Our mission is to create more farmers and build a sustainable national food system.
The Living Farm Education Center wants to expand its current facilities by adding a two acre orchard and perennial food garden. As our newest “classroom", this new undertaking will help teach our students the value of diversity, better preparing them for their own farms, and building a more resilient food system for everyone.
The orchard will cover two acres around our education center. It will include fruit trees, nut trees, asparagus, rhubarb and raspberries. Eventually, the fruits of our collective labor will help to feed our students, nourish our local community, and begin to mend our broken food system. The trees and plants will need to be ordered this fall to be planted in the spring. We have the motivation, the know-how, and the muscle to care for the new trees and plants.
It is our sincere belief that our students will go on to use the skills they learn here, and to teach others, so that eventually our nation will be able to feed its citizens in a responsible, sustainable manner.
