We (Patch Somerville and Margaret Hull) have been invited to Léhon, France to participate in an artist residency through the Alfred and Trafford Klots International Program for Artists. The program, run by Maryland Institute College of Art, provides selected artists with 5 weeks of free housing along the river Rance. The two of us, along with 5 other artists, are scheduled to attend June 24 - July 28. During our stay we will create paintings, embroideries, collages and collaborative pieces inspired by the light, landscape and nearby villages of Brittany.
Pane, 5 x 3', 2012
Patch paints mostly in oil, gouache and watercolor. His work reflects the perceptual experience of daily life, with domestic moments usually dominating his subject matter.
Porchswinger, 36 x 45", 2010
In France he will focus on painting plein air landscapes, as well as views from windows. He looks forward to experiencing the landscape of the medieval village they will be staying in as well as the long days and unique light of Brittany that he has heard so much about.
Meet the Neighbors, 13 x 12", 2011
Margaret embroiders on linen. She incorporates abstract and representational imagery. Her work seeks to connect with a memory and emotion that is familiar but perhaps vague, like an object one sees every day but that exists in her periphery and is unacknowledged. Her role as a maker and a preservationist is to tell stories, which are built out of observation and imagination.
A summer in Léhon will provide her a glimpse into arguably embroidery’s most significant cultural contribution to history and storytelling- the Bayeux Tapestry. This opportunity will inform and reinforce her own necessity to tell stories. By locating herself in a historic setting, she will explore the significant influence of place in her work.
Margaret has practiced plein air embroidery in urban and rural settings as a method of sharing her work with others and to challenge her visual perceptions about an environment. She plans to stitch in solitude in the middle of a field, as well as in town, in the bakery or café.
Your contribution to this project will help us cover the cost of airfare to France and travel once we arrive. (The village of Léhon is about 5 hours by car or train from Paris.) You will also help us purchase supplies such as oil paint, linen, and embroidery floss. We will need to ship supplies to Lehon in advance of the residency in addition to shipping artwork that we produce during the residency back to the U.S.
If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact us! firstname.lastname@example.org & email@example.com
