MAUZ allows users to control computers and media centers with a kinetic three dimensional computer mouse – connected to one’s smartphone. MAUZ app will support interaction with programs using motion and visual gestures.
On the leading edge of Human Interface Device (HID) innovation, MAUZ offers advanced features and simplicity of use. The MAUZ app automatically pops-up once the user plugs the device to the smartphone, prompting control of computer, media center, etc.
Bottom line - MAUZ is a 'Minority Report' interface powered by your smartphone
WE'RE PRESENTING THE MAUZ AT 2013 CES.FEEL FREE TO DROP BY AND MEET THE TEAM! BOOTH 74013 AT THE VENETIAN, LAS-VEGAS, NV. JAN 8-11, 2013
CONTROL COMPUTERS AROUND YOU
Full computer mouse interface - right click, left click and scroll functions. All you have to do is connect MAUZ to your smartphone, wait for the MAUZ app to launch and that's it. Simple as 1,2,3.
If a TouchPad is what you desire - simply tilt the phone and the app will change from a computer mouse to a TouchPad interface
CONTROL USING GESTURES - MOTION GESTURES
Get rid of those old school notions - use the z-axis and employ different movements to interact with your computer programs in a whole different way.
3D Navigation - Works similar to a Wii controller for your computer - just move the phone around to rotate your design work / flight simulator / whatever else...
Program gestures to fit your need - World of Warcraft enthusiast? Slay that dragon with a swish of your MAUZ; an avid PowerPoint user? Create a gesture to align objects to the left; devoted web surfer? Create a gesture to move back and forward between your pages - Whatever your poison is... create a gesture for it.
BE THE CONTROLLER - VISUAL GESTURES
MAUZ is changing the game or at least the way we play games, watch TV shows, control computers and listen to music... with a simple hand movement you can do so much. MAUZ responds to how your hand moves above the phone's camera, if you have to align objects to the left just signal to the left and if you want to zoom in/out or pan the earth in Google Earth simply move your hand back/front and sideways to see that ball rolling!
The MAUZ visual gestures are pre-programmed to interact with different computer applications. A swish of the hand to the right can mean the next song on your playlist or change the color of an object in Photoshop. You can also customize them to your own needs.
The MAUZ visual gestures are powered using Nanocritical's SDK - for more information please visit www.nanocritical.com.
Specific computer applications require us to frequently act in different ways.Well... we're making it easier, faster and more efficient for you. the MAUZ app identifies the application you're using and offers customized shortkeys to assist with your most repeated activities.
FOR YOU DEVELOPERS - OPEN SDK!
MAUZ will offer developers an open Software Developers Kit (SDK) to allow packages for 'front end' computer applications (e.g. Skype, Photoshop, Explorer, etc.). These packages that will include pre-defined motion and visual gestures and dedicated shortkeys will be offered through the MAUZ in-app store.
SHOWCASING THE PRODUCTION READY PROTOTYPE
So I've created a single shot movie to demonstrate some of the basic functionalities of MAUZ. Please try to ignore my questionable narration skills and focus on my mediocre charm... :) ENJOY
Risks and challenges
Creating a hardware product from idea to inventory is not a simple task. We know... we've been doing so for several years now. Spicebox has been operating for 2 years developing, manufacturing and fulfilling mobile accessories. Our CTO - Ori - has been developing hardware products for more than 9 years and has stayed for long periods of time in China as an 'on-field' manager vis-a-vis Chinese Contracted Manufacturers (CMs).
Right now MAUZ is past the 'production ready prototype' stage. This means what's left before we can actually sell units are two broad steps -
1. Pre-production - the creation of tooling and molds for the mass-production of units. This stage is an expensive one and its length generally depends on the number of iterations required before we can announce that a mold is ready to produce inventory in mass amounts. Since the level of complexity isn't exceedingly high we expect to have between 3-5 iterations each taking 1-3 weeks. That said, we did have instances where we created a product after more than 12 iterations. If we see more than 3-5 iterations are required we will need to shorten the time in between each iterations and we'll do so by sending our CTO and R&D Manager both industrial designers with extensive experience with pre-production in plastics and electronics to our manufacturing partner in Shanghai thus eliminating the 7-10 days it takes to ship and receive each iteration.
2. Production and fulfillment - the creation of inventory depends on the availability of affordable components. The cost per unit is highly influenced by the cost of goods used for the creation of each MAUZ unit. The availability of components is seasonal (for example in April inventory is being accumulated for the Xmas shopping season) and like any commodities pricing is directly correlated to demand. We will order the 'bottlenecked' components the minute we gain sufficient funding to ensure the MAUZ project goes live (not at the end of the campaign necessarily) and if needed we will cut on our margins and purchase more expensive components.
Last the MAUZ for the iPhone 5 is not in its 'production ready prototype' stage but on an earlier stage due to the availabilty of relevant components, mainly the new connector. While we learned a lot with the development of the iPhone 4/4S unit we feel we must emphasize the level of certainty in meeting deadlines is lower just because the amount of work is more significant.
We hope to exceed expectations with regards to fulfillment and quality of MAUZ but there are always unexpected things along the way. We've embedded extra time to deal with the unexpected and we will inform you of any development good or bad in this process.
