About this project
Zion Manufacturing Company is a new timepiece and accessory company from Surf-Coast Australia, right on the Great Ocean Road. Zion breeds quality and focuses on building the most stunning timepieces from the ground up, pairing them with accessories made from the highest quality kangaroo leather. Zion’s vision is to develop the finest and most desirable timepieces that tell the story of one of the most beautiful places on earth.
The name ‘Zion’ carries significant weight throughout religious history and is used to describe the ‘Holy Land’ or ‘perfect place’. For us, this perfect place is Surf Coast Australia, our hometown and heritage. Where is your Zion?
Our Zion, the Great Ocean Road is a rugged, winding road that stretches from Torquay, Australia’s surfing Mecca, to Warrnambool, one of Australia’s most important ports during the gold rush of the 1850s and '60s. The first section of the road was built in 1919 by returned servicemen from World War I and joined a number of small bush settlements along the Surf Coast. Today, we know those small bush settlements as Anglesea, Airey’s Inlet and Lorne - some of Australia’s most iconic coastal towns. The Great Ocean Road was later extended to reach Apollo Bay, Port Campbell and the magnificent Twelve Apostles. This beautiful part of the world has developed over time and is regarded as one of the most desirable places to live and holiday.
The people of the Surf Coast maintain a chilled-out lifestyle that is inescapable in this beach culture. In the '60s and '70s, surf brands like Rip-Curl and Quiksilver were founded on the Surf Coast and quickly became icons around the world. Now it's our time. With roots firmly planted in the Surf Coast and on the Great Ocean Road, we have the opportunity to give the world a piece of what the Surf Coast represents now. The Apollo - a unique and exclusive timepiece rooted in the beauty and simplicity of our coastal landscape and culture. A piece of our Zion, for the world to experience. Simple, yet complex.
The Apollo or ‘Handsome Youth’ is the first timepiece from Zion Manufacturing Company. It is simple, yet complex, engineered to perfection. The Apollo combines the complicated, intricate mechanics of the elusive tourbillon movement with a classic, elegant design and a strap made from the finest kangaroo leather.
The Apollo boasts a beautifully elegant case which houses the complex tourbillon movement. The case itself has been designed to complement the gracefully simple dial design, whilst leaving room for the tourbillon to flourish. With a case diameter of 42mm, and depth of 12mm, this watch sits comfortably on the wrist and leaves nothing to the imagination.
The Apollo’s dial is classic and elegant, letting the focus rest solely on the perpetual kinetic force that is the tourbillon. The 36mm, multi- layer dial can be enjoyed through the perfectly crafted, double-dome sapphire crystal, which has been finished with an anti-reflective layer, to avoid distraction. Much like the incredible views that the Surf Coast has to offer, the double-dome sapphire crystal gives the owner access to something equally as amazing, the tourbillon.
The stunning tourbillon movement can also be experienced through the sapphire crystal case-back, which also has an anti-reflective coating applied, yet again, to give the owner ultimate access to the complexity of the beautiful tourbillon movement.
The crown;,often an overlooked aspect of watch design, has been a major focus of the design process. The 7.5mm crown is the perfect gateway to the mechanical heart of the Apollo. Whilst it remains subtle, aiming to avoid distraction from the beautiful dial and movement, the crown is robust and gives the owner total control over the complicated tourbillon movement. Finished with an engraved logo on its convex face, the crown is subtle, yet a beautifully well-designed aspect of the Apollo.
To finish off the elegant design, this timepiece has been paired with our very own strap made from genuine kangaroo leather, sourced locally from Victoria, Australia. This leather is amazingly soft, yet rugged and has 10 times the tensile strength of any cow-hide leather on the market. The 22mm strap will be connected with curved spring bars that compliment the bold case design. The tapered strap finishes with a 20mm deployment buckle, which features a subtle Zion logo. The deployment buckle completes the experience; full circle.
The tourbillon, first created in 1795 by Abraham Louis-Breguet is a complicated and intricate time-keeping system. Initially, it was designed to perform the role of a watch movement more accurately. Since its inception, the tourbillon has become an icon; an example of ingenious engineering and perfect design. The tourbillon movement is one of the most important pieces of watchmaking history, and its exclusivity has caused it to be a distant dream for watch collectors and gentlemen alike.
For the Apollo, we’ve chosen the 3A00 Automatic Tourbillon Movement, a sleek and classic tourbillon movement that has a frequency of 28,800bph, with a total of 33 jewels. This movement is a modern take on the tourbillon created by Breguet in 1795, and continues the intricate and complex legacy of the tourbillon. When fully wound, this tourbillon will run for up to 60 hours. We recognise that the tourbillon is just not a realistic option for everyone. As well as being expensive, a high quality, beautifully designed tourbillon watch is a hard item to find. This is where we set out to bring the tourbillon to the people, whilst respecting its historic past and exclusivity.
There are many reasons the tourbillon movement is so highly regarded and reserved for only the highest of quality watches. Many of them relate to the complexity of its design and manufacturing. The balance wheel, an ever-revolving pendulum, rotates on its own axis and eliminates the effects of gravity by rotating to all positions within 60 seconds. Rather than 'ticking' like a quartz movement, or beating at a high rate, like a mechanical movement, the tourbillon rotates on its own axis. This eliminates gravity's influence and creates a beautiful show of modern engineering in the process.
(This timelapse video is one full minute rotation of the tourbillon.)
The Apollo comes standard with the exclusive tourbillon movement. When we began this project, the sole focus was creating a premium, extremely well-imagined product. It was important for us to give owners the opportunity to experience the most important piece of horological history ever created. The Apollo gives you the opportunity to take that piece of history with you, wherever you go. In respect to the exclusivity of the tourbillon movement, we have limited the production of the Apollo to just 500 pieces.
Much like the Great Ocean Road, the tourbillon movement required absolute elite engineering knowledge at the time of its creation. Both projects not only needed the perfect design, but meticulous preparation, and the finest of engineers to complete production. The Apollo, the first watch from Zion Manufacturing Company, incorporates the fine engineering of the tourbillon design with a classic, elegant and simple case and dial design, deeply inspired by life on the Surf Coast and Great Ocean Road.
Upon the conclusion of the Kickstarter campaign a survey to will be sent to every backer. Here, each purchaser will indicate which colour option they would like and confirm their shipping address and any other necessary details.
If backers want to a select wallet or extra strap as a part of their reward, they are required to add the value of that product to their pledge amount. For example, when pledging for the First in; Best Dressed reward, the backer would add $129AUD to their pledge of $1379AUD, if wishing to receive a wallet as well as their timepiece. This means that the total pledge amount would be $1508AUD. The backer will then be able to choose the colour of each product via the survey, described above.
Upon the completion of our initial stretch goal, our Rose-Gold Apollo at $115,000AUD, the following stretch goals will be available:
$90,000AUD - Funding Goal.
$115,000AUD - Rose Gold Apollo Released.
$160,000AUD - Free strap change tool with every watch reward.
$220,000AUD - Free kangaroo leather strap with every watch reward.
The Apollo will be shipped free of cost. Please note that you may still be required to pay any fees, taxes or duties that apply to your region. We are legally obligated to declare the full amount when shipping and are unable to mark your product as a gift.
We plan to be executing orders in December 2016. Whilst we are confident that we will be able to execute our timeline efficiently, it is possible that the estimated shipment month may change. We will share up to date information through the ‘Updates’ section of our Kickstarter campaign. Alternatively, we are available for personalised information via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We are confident in the manufacturing and design of our products. Each Apollo watch includes a 2 year limited warranty. For more information, regarding the warranty of your Apollo, please visit our website.
Beyond the 24-month limited warranty, we are pleased to offer a maintenance service throughout the lifetime of your Apollo. This can be completed by request through contacting us at info@zionmanufacturingcompany.

Risks and challenges
There are obviously many risks in undertaking mass production of such a high complication timepiece. Here at Zion, we have spent almost 2 years developing this project, finding the right manufacturing partners, testing protoypes and making sure that we are 100% comfortable and confident in the product that we deliver.
That being said, given the intricate nature of our project, there could potentially be delays in manufacturing time or issues that arise despite our best efforts. In this instance, we will keep clear, open means of communication to our backers, this will include regular email updates as well as social media and via the Kickstarter platform.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
