About

About a year ago I got involved in role-playing games through an internet platform with some old friends who now have children and no longer have time to escape and play their favorite game.

One of the biggest surprises I encountered when we started looking for the best platform is that there are no free platforms adapted to the current times. Most of them support only top views and 2D environments, and those allowing 3D environments are very limited.

Demons and Dices is the result of this search. It is a 3D role-playing game platform where you can join your friends to fight against the worst villain of the known universe, "The Master".

Currently, Demons and Dices implements some features designed for online role-playing games. This section summarizes the game’s main functionality.

Environment

One of the biggest “problems” I encountered when playing online is that you lose the feeling of sitting at a table with your friends. It feels like playing just another video game, while speaking with your friends.

To mitigate this feeling, I included a table, the character sheets and the master screen. I know it’s not quite the same as being in the same room as your friends, but I feel it’s an improvement.

Map

Demons and Dices is currently designed to use orthogonal maps (like the one used in D&D, Pathfinder and other games).

A map, usually an image that comes with the adventure, can be imported into the game and its size can be adapted to the grid defined by the program. This image can be used as the terrain and / or as a base so that you know where the objects need to be placed.

The app supports defining different levels for the same map, in this way, you can define a wizard tower or the deepest dungeon.

The app also allows you to hide upper levels so that you only show where the action is taking place (for example, you can hide the upper levels of the wizard tower so that you only see the level where the players currently are) and allows you to move the whole map up a level (it can be very useful for the master to hide the number of levels in a dungeon from players) or down a level (useful when defining the upper levels of tall buildings, so that you can hide the previously-defined bottom levels).

Library

Once the map image is imported, the next step is to generate the 3D effect and set the objects, walls and units on it.

Role-playing games require a huge quantity of different resources (particularly when adventures are developed in different scenarios with different enemies), so it is almost impossible to define the all the resources they need.

Over the last few months, I have been trying to import the most typical scenarios under which adventures develop, and I know that this is only the tip of the iceberg:

  • Castle: You can build your own castle, with walls, towers and passages.
  • City: You can define the streets of the city where an ambush occurred, a bazaar, a small village near the coast and a smithy.
  • Dungeon: This scenario is used by all campaigns at least once, so I believe that no description is required.
  • Indoor environments: You can define taverns, houses or any indoor environments needed for an adventure.
  • Outdoor environments: Trees, rocks or bushes can be imported to your maps to define mountainous terrains, forests or beach scenarios.
  • Graveyard: Tombs and statues can be used for these environments.

In the current version of the game, you can select from more than 400 resources to define your adventure environment, whether this includes terrains, walls or objects (trees, statues, pillars, etc.).

As there is a large variety of scenarios in role-playing games, there are lots of different enemies defending them. I tried to import some of them to the game, and as with the terrain options, I fully expect that the number of different figures will gradually grow:

  • Animals: Dogs, elephants, rats, horses, snakes, etc.
  • Demons: Our dear red horned friends.
  • Dinosaurs: Allosaurus, Dilophosaurus and T-Rex.
  • Dragons: No game would be complete without bone dragons, drakes and red dragons.
  • Heroes and Villains: Humanoid figures to represent the players and NPCs in the adventures.
  • Monsters: A generic category where you can find trolls, Nagas, minotaurs, earth elementals, etc.
  • Orcs: The well-known green skin humanoid figures.
  • Transports: Caravans, carts, ships and zeppelins.
  • Undead: Skeletons and zombies – the cleric adventurer’s best friends.

There are currently more than 120 different figures in Demons and Dices (for pictures of all of them, go to https://demonsandDice.com/library/)

Note: Demons and Dices has already scaled all library objects, so all you have to do is drag them to the desired position. If the object does not fit in the specific spot or is not correctly scaled, the app lets you move the object in any direction and modify its size as needed.

Light

Demons and Dices has four different light sources:

  • Ambient light: This light source only affects elements outside the map (table, master screen, dice on the table, etc.).
  • Global light: This light source affects all elements of the game and can be used to set a mood for the adventure scene (for example, the tone can be set to red when adventurers are near a lava river).
  • Scenario light: This light is designed to represent the light source of the sun or moon, so the angle of the light source can be defined. It only affects the map elements.
  • Map element lights: Any object of the map can generate one of two different light sources: an omnidirectional light, such as the light cast by a torch, or a directional light, such as that cast by a lantern.

Note: The color of the light can be defined independently for each of these light sources.

The previous features are those already available in the game, but there are not enough to implement a role-playing platform.

The main functionality that is still pending is the online support: In the current version, you can define the map, but you cannot play on it with other people.

This functionality is one of the most complex of the game, and although I am able to implement it, I prefer to hire a qualified person who can define a robust and safe platform. (This is one of the main reasons I am launching the Kickstarter campaign now, instead of waiting until the game is finished.)

I have planned the functionality that will be implemented over the course of the next month:

Beta Version (Mid 2018)

Before the beta can be launched, the following functionality needs to be defined:

  • Online functionality: To be able to start playing, users must be able to log into the server, share the map and the actions assigned to the figures and enable chat functionality between all players.
  • Rolling the Dice: Role-playing games cannot be played without dice, so this functionality is imperative.
  • Initiative tracker: Knowing the order of play is crucial to combat encounters, so this functionality must be available in the beta version.
  • Fog of War: It makes no sense for a player to see the entire map when the scenario starts, so it needs to be hidden by a fog of war that will lift when players start exploring it.
  • Measurement system: A system to measure the distance between two points will be available to easily check the range of spells and the movement capability of the units.

Release Version (Early 2019)

Although the functionality implemented in the beta version is enough to play online with your friends, the current platforms support a lot of useful functionality that simplifies the game development. I will also define this in the game:

  • Tokens: Although I will try to implement a large number of figures in the game, sometimes the desired enemy will not be available. In this case, the game will support importing an image and using it as the token for the missing figure.
  • Life tracker: During combat against multiple enemies, it is a bit difficult to track the damage to each unit. With this feature, each figure will track its own life, simplifying this task.
  • Character sheets: Importing them into the game will make it easy for all players to consult them during the game.
  • Movement tracker: This feature will allow the user to define the miniature’s trajectory (to clearly define whether or not the figure has activated the trap).
  • Specific dice rolling: In role playing games, there are some recurrent checks (such as attacks or perception checks) that are done multiple times during a session. This feature, together with the information from the character sheets, will support automating the check operations for the most used D20 system.
  • Area effect templates: Calculating the area affected by a spell without a template may lead to heated discussion with your friends. This feature clearly defines the area affected by a spell.
  • Journal: Tracking the history of your adventure will ensure you don’t forget something important.

After the Game is Released

Once the game is released, I plan to keep adding new functionality to the platform (the only reason I am not including this in the released version is to avoid making promises that I cannot keep).

Some of the ideas I am currently reviewing:

  • Magic effects: fireball animation is always a cool effect.
  • Exportable maps: Once you have defined your map, you can export it to create your adventure (currently you can capture the image from the map editor, but I want to improve the quality of the map exported).
  • Deck support: Add your custom cards to the game (to generate random encounters, random looting or random critical hit effects).
  • Rollable tables: The same functionality as that of the deck support, but with tables.
  • Map of the world: Sometimes, the campaign covers a large area (like a country) and you want to show it to the players. This functionality will allow you to define 3D maps for this purpose.
  • Figure customization: As with most games, you will be able to define your character from scratch and add the equipment you found during your adventure.
  • Auto-adjust map after import: One of the most tedious tasks when a new map is defined is adapting it to the grid size. I am working on coming up with a way to auto-adjust the image and offset it to the game grid.

Note: This is a list of my ideas for improving the game experience. The release date of these features has not been defined, and it is possible that some of them will never be implemented in order to keep space for other ones.

Note: Feel free to share any ideas you might have on how to improve the game, and I will consider whether I will implement them.

The game will be released with three different license models:

Note: In the beta version, the whole game and all functionality will be fully accessible. If you purchase any edition that allows access to the beta version, you will be able to host games for your friends with no restrictions (your friends will be able play using a free guest account).

Basic Model

You can play the game free of charge, which means you can host games or join any game created by anyone.

As master, you will be able to define the entire map using all resources available in the library, but you will not have access to the figures (except the one you unlocked in the Kickstarter campaign).

As player, you will only get as selectable character tokens, the figures unlocked by the master, or the one you unlocked.

Note: If you want to use a not unlocked figure in the game, you will have to purchase it.

New functionality may be locked (or only a reduced version may be available). For example, for the Basic Model, the following applies to the released version:

  • Character sheets: Not available.
  • Movement tracker: Not available.
  • Specific dice rolling: Custom dice rolling will be supported, but you cannot use this with references from the character sheet.
  • Rest of functionality At minimum, functionality listed in the previous section will be fully available.

Advertising campaigns may appear during your game.

Advanced Model

To access to this modality, a one-time payment of 149€ is required (109€ if you choose the Monk Edition during the Kickstarter campaign).

This modality permanently unlocks the entire functionality available at the launch of the released version (see previous section for more details). It also permanently unlocks all figures available at this time (except the one added through Druid and Wizard Editions).

Features implemented after the launch of the release version will not be available. If you wish to use these features, you will have to purchase them.

For example, if magic effects are implemented three months after the launch of the release version, you will have to make a one-time payment of X.XX € to use them.

Note: New functionality will be accessible free of charge for one month (to allow players to try it out and decide whether they want to use it).

Advertising campaigns will disappear from the game if this modality is chosen.

Premium Model

For a fee of 7.50 € per month, you will have access to the entire game with no restrictions or advertisements.

This modality will also grant access to the pre-released version of new functionality (at least one month prior to its release to the remaining users).

Note: One of the reason for defining a model based on a monthly subscription is that I do not want to create a game that will stop growing after the Kickstarter campaign is over, and I feel that if players can opt to stop paying for the game, this will be an incentive to continue developing it.

Your contribution will allow you stay informed of the progress of the crowdfunding campaign. You will be able to help us to reach our goal and, once the Kickstarter campaign ends, you will have access to the game’s map editor.

Note: Images and maps generated with this tool fall under Creative Commons licensing. You can use them to illustrate your adventures and campaigns but you must include the game logo and website address a corner of the map.

The first 30 adventurers to select this modality will be able to permanently unlock one of the available game figures for all Kickstarter founders (with the exception of the Scout Edition).

If you select this modality, you will also:

  • Unlock all figures chosen by Hunter Edition founders.
  • Unlock the warrior and the hunter figures
  • Achieve all unlocked stretch goals.
  • Receive the map editor (when Kickstarter campaign ends).
  • Have access to the beta version of the game (mid-2018).
  • Once the game is released, you will receive a free 6-month premium access subscription.

This modality is the basic edition of the game. If you purchase this edition, you will:

  • Unlock all figures selected by Hunter Edition founders.
  • Unlock the warrior figure
  • Achieve all unlocked stretch goals.
  • Receive the map editor (when Kickstarter campaign ends).
  • Have access to the beta version of the game (mid-2018).
  • Once the game is released, you will receive a free 6-month premium access subscription.

This edition is for the people who want to play forever and only pay once. If you select this option, you will:

  • Permanently unlock all functionality implemented when the released version of the game is launched.
  • Unlock all figures implemented when the released version of the game is launched (except those defined by the Druid and Wizard Editions).
  • Achieve all unlocked stretch goals.
  • Receive the map editor (when Kickstarter campaign ends).
  • Have access to the beta version of the game (mid-2018).

Note: Take into account that figures and functionality implemented after the released version is launched will not be included on this edition.

This modality allows you to import a 3D model into the game, by selecting one of models available on websites.

Note: Currently, all figures have been selected from these pages. For a list of the websites that the models are imported from, click here: https://demonsanddices.com/acknowledgments/

The only rules you must follow when selecting your desired model are:

  • The cost of the 3D model on the website must be less than 30€ (we will cover this cost).
  • The design must be royalty free.
  • The design must contain less than 4000 polygons. If the model has more polygons, it will be optimized so that it does not impact game performance (loss in quality).

In addition to importing a 3D model, if you buy this edition, you will:

  • Permanently unlock all functionality implemented when the released version of the game is launched.
  • Unlock all figures implemented when the released version of the game is launched (except the ones defined by the Wizard Edition).
  • Receive the map editor (when Kickstarter campaign ends).
  • Have access to the beta version of the game (mid-2018).
  • Once the game is released, you will receive a free 12-month premium access subscription.

Note: Please take into account that figures and functionality implemented after the released version is launched will not be included on this edition, but you can use them without any cost during one year due to the free premium access subscription.

Send us a picture of the figure that represents your hero, villain or monster and it will be converted to a 3D model which will be imported into the game.

If you choose this modality, please take the following into account:

  • The image of the desired model must be royalty free.
  • Our design team will allow you up to three iterations to reach the final result. You will be sent images of the 3D model after each iteration, so that you can correct any details and customize your desired figure.
  • The design may not be finished in time for the beta version of the game (depending on the number of Wizard Editions selected by founders).

In addition to the created model, you will also:

  • Unlock all functionality implemented when the released version of the game is launched.
  • Unlock all figures implemented when the released version of the game is launched
  • Once the game is released, figures and features added during the next 12 months will be added free of charge to your Advanced Model account.
  • Receive the map editor (when Kickstarter campaign ends).
  • Have access to the beta version of the game (mid-2018).

Note: Please take into account that figures and functionality implemented one year after the released version is launched will not be included on this edition.

Risks and challenges

Although I have the ability to implement the missing functionality, I am not an expert in online platforms so, in order to guarantee an application that is robust and safe, I need some help (this is one of the main reasons I am launching the Kickstarter campaign now). Finding a qualified person is a risk, but since I have knowledge in this area, if I do not find an appropriate person or if this person’s work does not meet my expectations, I will do this work. This means the project will be delayed and the final quality may not be as expected.

The other open point is the resources available at the game. Over the last several months I have been increasing the game resource library looking for website that has free importable 3D designs. I am very happy with the results; however, improving them will require some money (for example, some units aren’t fitted with idle animation). This point does not interfere with the game’s launch schedule, but it will affect the product’s final quality, so this represents a risk.
