Terre is a new, art-filled, independent magazine about natural wine, heritage foods, and the cultures surrounding them. That's the very short version. Read on for much greater detail.

WHAT IS TERRE?

Terre is a literary, art-driven magazine that will take on a fresh exploration of terroir--a French concept that encompasses climate, history, and people--through art, photo, and text. Terre will highlight small producers of food and natural wine around the world, and the communities around them. The magazine will have a strong visual component, showing the work of artists and photographers in the food and wine space.

We will not review or score wines, or promote products, but rather tell their stories in a colorful, thoughtful way. Terre will take you into vineyards, farms, kitchens, creative studios in a way that no mainstream publication currently does.

We chose print as our medium, rather than web, because we want to allow writers and artists to have time to really investigate a subject, before producing something. In our pages, we will showcase the work of serious writers and artists around the world. The magazine will be fact-checked and proof-read, and otherwise guided with utmost editorial integrity.

The first issue will accept a small number of ads that fit into our values and aesthetics.

Terroir is on our tables each day, and in our wine glass. Below are more details about what the magazine's first issue sets out to cover.

ISSUE 1: FORGOTTEN GRAPES

Our first volume takes natural wine, and the diversity of wine grapes, as its starting point. Organic, biodynamic wines made without chemicals have been made since the first vineyards were planted, but in the Twentieth century there was a wave of modernization, and most winegrowers began using chemicals in viticulture, and manipulating wines in the cellar to make them more profitable. The result was a serious loss of quality wine, and also a destruction of vineyard land and grape diversity.

Natural winemakers are a small minority of the wine world who keep things small, work organically, and don't use chemicals (like artificial yeasts, or like the colorant MegaPurple, both of which are extremely common) to mess with their wines. Many of these winegrowers are keeping forgotten heritage grape varieties alive, and this is a subject that Terre wants to highlight in its first issue. We will cover the subject of viticultural diversity--including New World hybrid grapes--through various approaches, including winemaker-written articles. We'll do it all in an approachable way that any person can grasp. Terre is not an academic magazine; we want the best quality writing that exists out there.

In future issues, the culture of natural wine will remain a primary focus, and we'll expand our coverage to include terroir-driven spirits, coffee, cheese, and foods.

There may also be some odd-ball articles that don't directly tie to terroir, like something about chef's fashion, for example--I mean, let's have some fun here. It's an indie mag, right?

This will be a limited-edition, print-only magazine. Writers around the world with different backgrounds (winemakers, importers, cheesemakers, etc) will contribute stories that have literary quality and which transport the reader to remote corners of the world. Handmade artwork & photography from a vast array of contributing creatives/makers will accompany.

We will publish two issues per year, launching the first in late 2017.

The money we fundraise here will cover the costs of (a) layout, (b) printing and distribution to a stockist near you, (c) paying our talented contributors, (d) a spirited gathering to celebrate our first issue. Any leftover money, as well as revenue from wholesales to stockists, will roll over into future issues of Terre.

WHO IS TERRE?

Rachel Signer, publisher, editor (with guest editors)

Rachel is an itinerant writer focused on documenting the culture of natural wine and innovative chefs, these days dividing her time between Brooklyn and Paris. Her work appears in Vogue.com, Vice MUNCHIES, Wine Enthusiast, Wine & Spirits Magazine, and elsewhere. A champion of small producers and big questions, Rachel envisions Terre as a place where writers and artists can shed light on the many complex questions around wine and food. On Instagram: @rachsig. Erika DaSilva, art director

Erika is a self-taught illustrator painting primarily in gouache. Her work is inspired by 10 years in food and wine in New York City and abroad, and focuses on the community surrounding food and those who serve and grow it. She painted the cover image and made our Terre wine tote bags. Instagram: @crown9studios. Also see: erikadasilva.com.

Risks and challenges

Starting an indie mag is about bringing something to life, from a mere idea; we're doing this with only our creativity! We're doing it because we see a wide open space in the media landscape, and we feel we are equipped to dive in there. While we launch Terre, we'll be balancing other jobs to have income, and none of us have personal wealth to fund this. Your support is the only way we can make this print magazine become a reality.
