About this project
Coming this spring...
Kid Beowulf is a gateway drug to the classics! – WIRED
Using a blend of humor and soap-opera filled plot twists, the cartoon-style illustrations are lively and contain lots of visual humor. – School Library Journal
Kid Beowulf is filled with magic, intrigue, betrayal, and all the other good stuff that makes for a good story. – Good Comics for Kids
The Kid Beowulf series was originally published by Portland based publisher, Bowler Hat Comics: book one Kid Beowulf and the Blood-Bound Oath was released in 2008 and was followed in 2010 by Kid Beowulf and the Song of Roland. Unfortunately, in the middle of production of book three, Kid Beowulf and the Rise of El Cid, Bowler Hat Comics ceased operation. For the last year I have tried to find a home for Kid Beowulf with a new publisher, but too many are hesitant to take up the series mid-stream; which is a shame, because the book is done--and it just might be my best story yet!
My name is Alexis E. Fajardo and I'm the creator and cartoonist of the graphic novel adventure series Kid Beowulf. Inspired by the epic poem BEOWULF, Kid Beowulf follows the adventures of 12-year-old twin brothers Beowulf and Grendel as they travel to distant lands and meet fellow epic heroes therein. Similar to Bone, Asterix, and Avatar the Last Airbender, Kid Beowulf is a fun, action-adventure series intended to introduce readers to the great epics of old and inspire them to read the originals.
The goal of this Kickstarter is to fund the third book in my Kid Beowulf series, Kid Beowulf and the Rise of El Cid. This softcover book has a full color, wraparound cover, is 240 pages (BW/halftone interiors), with final dimensions of 7" x 9". It will match the dimensions and high production quality of books one and two, and sit handsomely next to them, completing the first trilogy in the Kid Beowulf series!
Kid Beowulf and the Rise of El Cid, is based on the Spanish epic poem, El Cid and chronicles the adventures of a young, principled, knight named Rodrigo Diaz and the challenges he faces as he becomes the hero called "El Cid." While Rodrigo rises, Beowulf and Grendel fall, finding themselves down and out in Spain, desperate for some quick cash and a way back home; along the way they are hounded by old enemies and bad choices and will have to choose between being practical or being principled. Kid Beowulf and the Rise of El Cid is filled with all-ages action, adventure, humor, and intrigue!
The cartooning is classic and the storytelling is straightforward, if you've never read the original epics Beowulf, The Song of Roland, or El Cid, it won't matter--my books are made to be read by everyone and enjoyed on all reading levels. Kids who have never read the epics enjoy Kid Beowulf as much as the professors who teach it. For me, writing and drawing Kid Beowulf is all about exploring these legends and mythologies I grew up with and introducing them to a new generation of fans. Each book works as a prequel and leads the reader to the original epic it was based on. There is no greater way to make these dusty epics accessible than wrapping them in the most approachable art-form there is: comics!
Kid Beowulf has received wide acclaim from all kinds of fans including kids, adults, teachers, librarians, and creators alike. WIRED calls Kid Beowulf "a gateway drug to the classics" and the San Francisco Chronicle said it was "a bloody, gutsy series!" The series has been featured in the School Library Journal, The Diamond Bookmark, and most recently cited in The Parent's Guide to the Best Graphic Novels.
I've been working on Kid Beowulf and the Rise of El Cid since 2010 and now that it's done, it's time I got it to my loyal (and patient) fans. Hopefully with your help and with Kickstarter's I can do this--and maybe we'll even get a few new fans along the way! I'm offering a variety of rewards, from PDF downloads, to hard copies, to limited edition Kid Beowulf sculpts! Please take a look and don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions.
Throughout the Kid Beowulf Kickstarter month I'll be posting updates here, as well as my twitter account (@lex_kidb) and the Kid Beowulf facebook page. If you like what you see then please consider contributing to the cause and spreading the word. Your support is greatly appreciated!
Risks and challenges
The risk to completing this project is minimal as I've worked very hard this past year and a half to complete the book BEFORE bringing it to Kickstarter. And the book is DONE! The final draft is currently going through a rigorous editorial process and once it has been spell-checked and edited, it will be ready to print! The books will be printed in the United States and general turnaround time for this quantity is about 4-5 weeks. Once I receive the books, I will start filling orders! I've placed a delivery date for March, 2013, but pending that I receive the books sooner from the printer it's possible they could ship as early as February. I will keep all backers appraised of the production process and delivery dates as I receive them.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
