How it all started
It all started around 6 years ago when we moved to our new house and finally got a chance to entertain our friends and family. We held many dinner parties serving Uzbek food to groups of up to 30-40 people (friends, friends of friends, people from different ethnic backgrounds). Each and every time, we got the same compliments ….and the same question: We are addicted to your Plov. Why don't you open your own restaurant? Another crucial moment was the day we were driving and heard Jonathan Gold (Food critic for the LA times, KCRW and the first food reviewer to win a Pulitzer Prize) on the radio talking about Uzbek food and saying about his love for plov, “the grandfather of all pilafs". He bemoaned the fact that there was no longer any Uzbek restaurant in Los Angeles and that Los Angeles needs one.
So as an Uzbek family we decided to open our restaurant !!!
In Uzbekistan food has this magic flavor. What we are trying to do is to bring this flavor to LA using only the best meats, organic vegetables and special rice (which is the closest to Uzbek rice we can find in the US). It is the freshness and quality of our produce, combined with our authentic know-how that has made our food such a hit with friends…. and it is this same authentic, delicious experience we want to offer at Samarkand café.
We have a amazing chef, Habiba Musaeva. She has been working in the food industry for more than15 years in Uzbekistan and today in Los Angeles. She will bring all her long experience and her unique "savoir faire" in Uzbek cooking at Samarkand Cafe.

Risks and challenges
New restaurants businesses have always been risky but 6 years of "pop up" events have allowed us to test the Uzbek food concept and build a strong following. Although we will be competing in a heavily populated industry, we have the distinct advantage of being the first Uzbek restaurant in Los Angeles.
Opening a restaurant always comes with challenges: construction permits, licences, and of course finances. We need to raise $120,000 to open our restaurant this SPRING. Our Kickstarter goal of $18,000 will represent 15% of the initial capital. The other 75% is coming from private investors, family and the community bank.
We already are in serious talks with Grand Central Market in Downtown LA who have shown a lot of interest in our project and who have now asked us for a financial commitment in order to secure a commercial space.
