After returning from an extended trip out west, I came back to New York and found that peace and solitude found was often difficult to attain. The pace of life in New York is faster, busier, louder than that among the quiet rolling hills of New Mexico or under the canopy of a Redwood.
There are many distractions in life that enable us to forget to take time out for ourselves. Through this installation I wish to aid others in finding their own peace. I hope that after some time of quiet reflection, they will begin a journey to seek it in their everyday lives. The installation is a space in which all people can come and gather in a moment of serenity. It is something everybody deserves.
Sanctum will be a structure participants will sit inside. Elements of nature will be reflected in every aspect of this piece, including nature sounds playing to aid in the relaxing atmosphere of the space. There will be a rug inside that I have weaved with pieces of fabric that others have written positive, encouraging messages upon. When participants leave the installation, they will have the chance to contribute their own messages which I will then add to the rug at a later time. I would like to begin Sanctum at this event, and then have it continue to grow to help as many people as possible. The first showing of this project will be in downtown Riverhead, NY in August of 2014.
Your help and support is needed to take this idea and make it a reality!
Funds raised will be used to build the many elements of this structure, as well as set the foundation for the project website. $300 is the absolute minimum I will need, anything more than that would allow for better and more versatile materials. The website will be a place where versions of the project will be shown and on display will be the positive messages contributed at each event. I want it to be a place where anybody anywhere can always go for support and inspiration on their journey to inner peace. Any surplus from this first project will be used to build future versions.
Thank you for checking out this project, I hope it speaks to you and you will be able to experience it one day!
Risks and challenges
This project will be a challenge, but it is one I will be devoting myself to 100%. I have the technical skill for most elements of the project, but also have a great support group of friends and family to assist. Things I am powerless to: The weather, which may only offset the premier, I will have to decide an alternate date if this is the case. This is a community backed event, so things may change there as well.
Sanctum is a project that I intend to build upon in the future, so even if things change, it will be shown at a future date.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
