To Be Brave: Ending Body Shame is a painting series inspired by interviews of women with histories of eating disorders, sexual assault, and body shame. They are women with idiosyncrasies all their own, but with similar stories of violation and survival. By addressing my own experience of body shame in my previous work, I was enabled to hear, and now tell the stories of other women and discover the difference between victim and survivor. For these women to both tell, and show me their stories has been an incredibly brave thing.
So far, I have twelve women signed on for the project, many interview and modeling sessions done, a blog documenting the process, and three paintings very near completion. But I need some help to make the other paintings possible.
The money I am raising at this stage will be dedicated to three things: wood, canvas, paint. Your contributions will make the creation of eight more paintings possible.
Money raised beyond the $750 mark will go towards: renting space for the show, paying performers, and print materials/promotion. I want to engage poets, dancers, writers, researchers, and other artists on the topic body shame, and have them present their findings at the show.
This is an important topic that affects many people. Please contribute and help this project continue. If you have any questions, email: firstname.lastname@example.org
Risks and challenges
Creating the canvases will be a simple task once I have the materials. I have the skill to create them and a studio space to do it in.
The larger challenge moving forward is getting word out about this project, and finding other performers, artists, and researchers to engage with the topic of body shame. I am reaching out, and interest is growing around the project. But, again, I need your help. Spread the word!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
