What is "Geek Loves Punk"?
A feature film made by me; a dreamer; storyteller. I have wanted to make a feature film since I was ten years old, and this is the film I was born to make. I just need your help to get it finished. :)
What is "Geek Loves Punk" about?
It's the story of three best friends trying to figure out their lives and their relationships with each other. ELIZABETH, the geek, is a lesbian and an aspiring comic book writer who longs for a girlfriend. Her best friend SOL is a comic book artist who’s real passion is building robots. SOL is in love with EMMA. EMMA is best friends with both of them. She works at the comic book shop and is trying to figure out her purpose in life. A punk named MEGAN walks into ELIZABETH’S life and shakes things up between the three friends.
Elizabeth is an inexperienced nerd who has to venture out her comic book cocoon into the hard and fast world of the punk rock scene in hot pursuit of her dream punk rock woman, MEGAN. Emma admires the purpose in life that Elizabeth has found in wanting to write comics. Emma is seeking out her own purpose in life. She also can take the folks in her life for granted and might need to learn how to appreciate the folks in her life. SOL is the backbone for the two women. He’s always there for them. But, he’s tired of being the sidekick and wants to be the leading man!
This movie is sweet and so are you!
This film also celebrates comic books because I love comics! X-Men comics got me through the not-so-awesomeness of growing up as a kid. I took a graphic novels class in college and it was amazing! So, had to bring the comic book love to the movie.
The movie has the quirkiness and heart of Napoleon Dynamite, the honest dealing of sexuality of Lena Dunham's Girls, and the sweetness Juno.
Haven’t we seen this before?
Nope! This is the first indie film that tackles issues of love, dating, career and friendship in the context of lesbian and geek culture. It's a refreshing look on the trial and tribulations that 20's and 30's-something year olds are facing today.
Plus, there’s tons of great comic book stuff in the film!

Sincerity is making a come back!
I made this movie because I wanted to give an alternative viewpoint on dating than what is normally shown in movies these days. I wanted to bring a bit of sincerity and genuine sweetness to a film. A film that made folks laugh and restore their faith in the good things in life. I felt it was my mission!
I’ve never heard of you. Who are you?
Great question! I’m Julie from Oakland. I'm a caregiver for the elderly by day and a filmmaker by night. I'm also a geek, lesbian and comic book fan.
I also have some creative credits to my name:
1. I was on a reality show on the TLC network.
2. I was a quarter finalist in the 7th Annual International Scriptapalooza Screenplay Competition in 2005.
3. I won a local film festival award with the first short film I directed, Forget Me Not:
4. I won another local film festival award with the second short film I directed, Geek Loves Punk. This is the short film version of what I turned into a feature film:
5. I was interviewed on The Myrna Lim Show:
Anyone famous in your movie?
Kind of! Would you call Silence of the Lambs famous? :) That's right! There's an actor in my movie who was also in Silence of the Lambs!!! You know what that means? You can play the Kevin Bacon game with my movie! YES!!!
Celeste Martinez was featured in a cellphone commercial on television!
Orlando Mendoza is so good looking he was put on a billboard!
Chris Quintos was featured in a very important play in San Francisco.
Eugene Canotal was in a car commercial on television! He played a mechanic!
What will you do with the money?
Great question! I will pay for the following:
- Professional sound edit (at a sound studio)
- ADR (Additional Dialogue Recorded)
- Kickstarter Fees
- DCP (Digital Cinema Package)
- Final Sound Mix (At a sound studio)
- Marketing the film
- Film Festival fees
- Professionally written music
Will you finish the movie?
Only if you help me. Seriously, I need you. I don’t own a yacht that I could sell to finish the movie. I’m a filmmaker/caregiver on a budget. I took the movie as far as I could go without needing the dough. This is as indie film as it gets. Your support would be you supporting the indie film cause. Indie film is about heart and soul. This movie has oodles of heart; just not oodles of budget. Supporting the film means joining a group of artists, dreamers, nerds and sweethearts who wanted to make a film that made folks chuckle and think. Join the cause! Support the film! High fives and hugs for everyone!
So, how do I help?
Click the green button to the right of the video. Kickstarter will ask you for your pledge, which reward you want, and how you want to sign up. Signing up is easy –you can even do it on Facebook. Tell everyone you know about this project. The idea of Kickstarter is to get a million folks to give you a dollar. No donation is too small. The more folks who support the more likely of a successful campaign.
What happens if you don't reach your goal?
Than, I get nothing. Kickstarter is an all or nothing platform. So, reaching the goal is vital. :)
What if you go over your goal?
We would use the money to apply to even more film festivals! We'd use the money to do even more marketing of the film! We'd make a snazzier press kit (many festivals require press kits)! We'd use the money to pay an entertainment lawyer to help us look over distribution offers while we were on the road. Honestly, we'd help make our dreams come true.
I already know the next ten movies I want to make. I'm a sure thing. I'm already in very early pre-production on my next feature.
Geek Loves Punk is not a one time thing. Donating to this movie would mean donating to the beginnings of a production company.
I've dedicated my life to making movies. So, any extra funds would much appreciated and greatly utilized.
Let's dream together folks! Let's make this happen! :)

Risks and challenges
None! The movie is finished! We just need a sound edit and a sound mix! The process has already begun. I just need to raise the funds to pay for the sound! :)
Sound is super important! Think of Star Wars and the iconic light saber sound or Jurassic Park and the terrifying dinosaur roars.
Sound tends to be a subconscious experience when watching a film. However, sound design is extremely important. It adds atmosphere to the film and puts a nice pretty bow on the overall experience.
Seriously, just need the sound done and the movie's finished! :)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
