About this project
The Roman Empire
The Roman Empire was the first of its kind.
The city of Rome, when it became a Republic in 509BC, had a population of just under 350,000.
But eventually, it extended its reach to occupy all of Italia.
Then over a period of time, by 117 AD, Rome ruled an empire that spanned, at its greatest extent, from Britannia and Hispania in the west, to Egyptas and Babylonia in the East.
To expand its Empire, the Roman Army conquered foe after foe, country after country, its methods professional and effective, yet brutal, killing and injuring thousands of both civilians and soldiers alike, enslaving those that they spared.
I have chosen the 1st Century BC period of the Roman Empire to write about, where i will bring to life the strategy, the tactics, the soldiers and their equipment, and the brutal battles they fought to further the aims of their Emperor. It will be a Roman trilogy that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
An Empire that spanned over a thousand years.
Using its military, Rome quickly conquered its neighbours on the Italian peninsular. Further military campaigns ensured the subjugation of the Huns, vandals and Germanic tribes.
The Punic Wars, and the conquest of Carthage and the fall of the Carthaginian Empire, led the Roman Empire to expand its reach to the Iberian peninsular, modern-day Spain and Portugal.
But they didn't stop there. Then came Greece, Macedonia, Gaul and by 117AD, the Roman Empire spanned, at its greatest extent, from Britannia and Hispania in the West, to Egyptas and Babylonia in the East.
During the late Republic, there were several civil wars in ancient Rome, involving well known people such as Julius Caeser, Pompey, Mark Antony and Octavius. But the expansion continued.
But Rome's invincibility wasn't to last for ever and major territorial loss began in 376 AD. The Gothic War was seen as the watershed in the history of the Roman Empire. This was the first in a series of events that saw the collapse of the Western Roman Empire. 530 AD, saw its end.
Book 1. Legion X - Equestris (working title)
In Gaul, Caesar took over 800 cities and towns by storm, subdued 300 tribes, and in successive pitched battles against a total of 3,000,000 men he killed 1,000,000 and took the same number prisoners - Plutarch AD 45-120
As soon as this project has reached its target, and with the majority of my research already complete, I will finish writing the first book in this new exciting trilogy. Legion X - Equestris will be published by December 2017. You will be the first to read the exciting start to this new trilogy.
I am very fortunate to have commissioned a superb Historical Illustrator to illustrate my book covers. I will share with you the progress as the first cover is sketched out, but here is a taster to show his capabilities.
The Illustration will be a Triptych, in colour, that will be used to provide the front covers for all three books in the trilogy. At this stage, Matthew is exploring the shape and pose of a Legionnaire, with his Montefortino helmet, Gladius (sword) and Scutum (shield). When you look at some of Matthew's other work, you can see why i am so excited by having him work alongside me.
Matthew Ryan lives in England and works as an Historical Artist/Illustrator. His work has mostly so far specialised in the medieval period but his love of history covers many events and times and he is keen to turn his paint brushes and pencils to working on part of the Roman period for this trilogy. He has worked for various clients as an illustrator, on TV shows such as Tony Robinson's Walking Through History, to Museums and Visitor Centres such as The Tower of London (for the Agincourt 600 Year Commemoration), his artwork as been used on record album covers and of course he has produced various work for publishing clients. His art portrays both the action and drama of military history along with an accuracy and authenticity that's backed up by his genuine passion for the subject and his study from original source material. As well as working as an illustrator Matthew's work already has quite a fine art following, his original work is very sought after as are signed prints of his artwork.
Below is one of his fabulous illustrations to whet your appetite for the book cover to come!

The book cover will evolve during the period of this project and I will share with you any updates.
The first cover for any new trilogy is always an exciting prospect. If you look at the covers for all of my other novels, you can see that they are striking in themselves. But for my Roman trilogy, they will be at a new level.
Part of the excitement for me, is sharing the creation of this project with you as it progresses.
My next Project - Book 2 & 3 (Titles to be determined)
Can I achieve this?
My credibility as an author has already been proven, having already written 10 novels. Many have been Amazon best sellers in their category and 'The Blue Effect' was an Amazon #1 Best Seller.

Risks and challenges
Writing any novel, particularly between 90,000 and 100,000 words long, is a challenge. Writing a trilogy, is naturally an even greater challenge. But, I have already successfully written, and published, 10 novels.
What the support of this project will allow me to do, is to write full time. As I currently work full time, there is naturally a conflict between allocating time for my job and time to do what I enjoy most, and that is writing.
The successful culmination of this Kickstarter project, will allow me to switch to writing full time sooner and allow my readers the opportunity to read the start of this Roman trilogy and many other of my new books in the future.
I am considering writing a trilogy covering World War 1, The Israeli Six-Day/Yom Kippur War, North & South Korea and even Science Fiction. They are well within my capability and my research is always in-depth. My recent novels, 'Cold War Redux 1 - Duplicity' and 'Cold War Redux 2 -Deception', involved numerous visits to the Ukrainian frontline with Russia, to ensure my research was accurate.
Your support will allow me to continue to write at pace, entertaining thousands of new readers as well as those who already enjoy my novels.
By supporting me, you will share in this exciting adventure.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
