"Book de Tour" will be a collection of my small watercolor and ink paintings from the 2014 Tour de France completed as the race unfolds on my television screen and showing what I believe to be the key moments of each stage. You'll understand my reasoning as each picture is annotated with my interpretation of what's happening and its importance in this high moving game of chess on wheels. I love to work this way because, as I paint, the story’s conclusion is unknown and, the significance of what I record, unclear until the winner triumphantly crosses the finish line. Cycling’s an unpredictable sport and I love to capture and convey its intensity.
Each of the Tour's 21 stages will form a separate chapter in the book and tell the story of this year's race with bold strokes and washes of color as I capture the key moves, lung-searing attacks and counter-attacks, adrenaline-rushing descents, heart-breaking crashes, set amid the glorious landscapes of England, Belgium, Spain and France. It's truly a tale worth telling visually.
Technical Details of Book de Tour
A soft cover 11 inch by 8 1/2 inch 192 page book printed in the United States
Recognizing that the amount of time I spent watching bike racing impinged on the time I could devote to painting, my wife suggested I combine the two – a stroke of genius! The 2012 Tour de France was my maiden Grand Tour and I’ve been painting, posting and selling my post-card sized original watercolor and ink works of WorldTour races via EBay and my site ever since. You can see earlier examples of my work at www.theartofcycling.blogspot.com where I’ve covered other Grand Tours, such as the Giro d’Italia, and a number of major WorldTour races. The Book de Tour project is a natural extension of my cycling-related work to date.
Author and artist: Greig Leach, a professional artist for over 30 years whose work has been exhibited in US, sold around the globe and hangs in international public, private and corporate collections. I’m also official artist for 2015 World Road Race Championships, Richmond.
I’ll be working closely on the project with the following people who are charged with bringing my dream to life and who all share either my passion for art and/or cycling.
Muse: My wife, actress Bridget Gethins, all my best ideas are really hers!
Publisher: Richmond Virginia based Dementi Milestone Publishing, http://www.dementimilestonepublishing.com; a local (to me) family-owned company that specializes in lovingly crafting pictorial coffee-table books including “On Richmond’s Wheel” a historical tale about cycling in our home town.
Graphic Designer: Sid Caldwell Deaghlan, www.sidmade.com another local, who’s eye for fine detail shines throughout her published works.
Editor: Sheree Whatley, a serial blogger whom I first met when she interviewed me for VeloVoices, http://velovoices.com/2014/02/14/the-big-picture-artist-greig-leach/. She’s based, like many professional riders, in the South of France.

Starting with the Grand Depart in Yorkshire, England, I will be creating all of the content, both artwork and annotations during the month of July.Simultaneously, my editor, Sheree Whatley will be editing the text and my graphic designer, Sid Caldwell Deaghlan will be preparing each page for printing. The entire digital mock-up will go to the printer in early August, during which I will be preparing to ship out the rewards to each backer. As soon as the finished printed copies are in hand in late October, I will begin sorting rewards packages and start shipping out in early November. In addition while waiting for the printer to do their work, I will be working with Dementi Milestone Publishing on channel positioning.

Risks and challenges
All endeavors, even life itself, come with risks. But, barring accident or illness, I am confident in my ability to create the necessary quality artwork and accompanying text based on my previous experience with earlier Grand Tours. I have the support of a great team but we all recognize that our greatest risk lies on the production side. Our clear goal is to have the book available to ship to you, my backers, and in the stores by early November. Yes, it’s an ambitious deadline but one with which my publisher is familiar. The artwork and first draft of the narrative will be completed shortly after the official presentation of the winners of the 2014 Tour de France on the Champs Elysees in Paris.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
