Created and written by artist/filmmaker, Asif Mian, the story of The Golden Goose centers around an immigrant family living in present day Queens, NY. Teenager, Gilad Ghibran, and his Uncle discover that Gilad’s blood has an effect on people when it is ingested - creating a hallucinogenic high. They decide to seize this opportunity and secretly make pills out of his blood and sell them.
I have always been Inspired by the Greek storyteller, Aesop, and his famous fables... specifically The Goose that Laid the Golden Eggs. This fable is a classic tale of greed: a man has a magical goose that lays golden eggs, and he eventually kills it after he is overcome by his greed for more gold.
Like the goose in the fable, Gilad is slowly sucked dry of his life force by Sadiq in order to make the blood drugs for money.
Coming from a visual arts background, a comic book was a great way to visualize the story while introducing the characters, mood and tone. Working with the amazing illustrator, Tory Sica, we created a full color, 30 page comic that debuted at Comic Con in 2015 to considerable buzz amongst the film and comic industries.
I immediately started working on the next draft of the feature film script, but I soon realized I needed to get this project out into the world as a short film.
Framing it in a modern context, the short takes place in present day Queens, NY - an immigrant working class borough of NYC.
I was born in Jersey City, NJ to Pakistani immigrants, and then raised in Astoria, Queens. I am using the immigrant communities of Queens as a backdrop because I know these people and places firsthand and think they are greatly underrepresented in film. Goose is a modern day tale where race, religion and morality are weaved into this story about Gilad's unique blood.
Much like my other work in music videos, short films and commercials, The Golden Goose is gritty, beautiful and dreamlike. I am inspired by the work of filmmakers like Stanley Kubrick, David Lynch, and Jacques Audiard and their ability to place the unreal within reality. Gilad's special blood creates a 'what if' scenario, that warps the world around him.
The future goal is to get the short film accepted to premiere film festivals , expose it to larger audiences, and greatly help our chances in finding funding towards the full feature film.
We are planning a 3 day shoot on location in Queens, NY.
With my experience in music videos, commercials and film, there are many amazingly talented cinematographers, production designers, editors and visual effects artists that I have worked with.
While many are down to help us make a truly unique film, money is still needed to cover costs for securing a location, equipment, art department, cast, crew and post production. It is a lot!
We need m$ney for:
- Cast + Travel + Lodging
- Location and Location Permits
- Film Crew
- Art Department
- Set Design, Materials & Construction
- Hair and Makeup
- Production Expenses
- & all the other things that go into a making a short film!
Alongside Asif, there is a team of experienced producers that are lending years of experience and connections to insure the best crew, planning and actors possible. Producer Jason Taragan (Paul Blart Mall Cop, The Truth About Lies), Producer Andrew Geller (Finding Sofia) and Producer Sara’o Bery (The Fashion Fund, Deep Time) are dedicated to seeing The Golden Goose fulfill its great potential.
MAKING IT HAPPEN!
The short film script is ready and casting is underway. We are assembling our crew and scouting out locations. We are making this thing! But we need your support!
