EVERY DONATIONS WILL COUNT:
The biggest challenge in making Amias will be funding the expenses. Every single contribution, whatever amount you can give, is what matters and will truly support this project. The amount I'm raising on Kickstarter, is a very big and vital portion of what the film will cost; The goal is really to raise £3000, £2000 from Kickstarter and the rest through other activities in the UK & Belgium.
So I'm counting on you, my friends, people I just happen to know, friends of friends, fellow creative minds and strangers, you will be supporting this project for any amount that you are able to donate. I need your individual contributions to get to £2000 and more. The £2000 will cover the renting of equipment, transportation and fees for our cast and crew for a 4/5 days shoot. We still have quite a few small production costs, that I have written down below. I know that whatever amount we raise, we will make this movie, but I need your help! With your support we can create an amazing film!
Needless to say, making movies is not cheap and I can't make it without your help. Nevertheless, I will have a wonderful and loyal crew who will work a lot every day for almost a week straight for free! The money you donate will go towards a variety of production considerations:
Renting equipment (camera, lenses, camera mounts, light generators, etc.)
Props, costumes, possible location fees, art design.
Transportation, van rentals, fuel, cast, crew.
Food, water, coffee for the crew and the cast for one week. (I would love to feed everyone that will be working so very hard to make this film)
Dvd copies, Festival fees, Kickstarter rewards and so on it goes..

THE STORY & CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT:
Amias develops two subsequent relationships, one with Nina and the other one with Ariel. Only when his heart has been broken twice, he realizes he can't run away anymore.
Amias, can be described as “a boy of extremes”, attractive and sensitive; He might seem cold, superficial and selective with first impressions, however he is quite the outgoing type once you get the chance to know him and is the "good boy" at heart. Amias is a comical overachiever who possesses both snobbish and extremely sensitive sides. Moreover, he hasn't got many acquaintances, therefore has more people that dislike him than actually like him, but however, he counts on a circle of friends that sustain him and are always there for him. He has a strong grip on society, he is not that much of the transgressive type, however he likes playing by his own rules, provoking many times uncertainty and uncomfortableness around him. He is famous for his personal style, and can be considered quite the influential type. Generally he prefers to be an outsider more than an insider. His legacy is music, he is quite picky on that, he plays the piano. He is terrible at keeping relationships going and considers his parents his biggest disappointment. He is an agnostic. Amias thinks he might have an on and off going relationship with Nina, and Ariel. As much as he wants them he is not sure what he really wants and therefore is scared of them. Both relations end up breaking his heart.
Nina is tall, blonde, thin, and appears to easily get whatever she wants because of her good looks. Many of her friends accuse her of using her looks as a means to secure that everything goes her way. She is particularly academically skilled, but she is often told that she is not meeting her full potential. She is not so meticulous about her fashion choices and her wardrobe has a bit of everything inside, and she has her own unique effortless way about her. Nina is charismatic, charming, talented, funny and kind, however she is quite the introvert type, she doesn't always act according to how she is feeling and keeps too much of herself inside rather than exposing it. All this contributes to her mysteriousness but often she is mistakenly thought by many to be “somewhat boring”. She has a wide circle of friends of different kinds, however her real friends you can count them on one hand. She loves her family and has an older brother. Nina has a crush on Amias since they were kids, but she quite can't get a strong hold on the relation and lets it slip away, without beginning it or without ending it.
Ariel, has light brown hair, is fair, calm, and has a fixation for black coffee. Sometimes, too much obsessed with how he might look and to perfectly fit in society, he can postpone or forget what really matters to him. On the surface, Ariel seems to be the perfect “Golden Boy”. He cares a lot about the opinions of others and is easily influenced. Yet, he is careful and interesting at the same time, and has the capacity of making people around him feel comfortable. Moreover, he has two lives, a surface one and an inner one and doesn't let many in. He likes being seen as secure and strong and his main requirement is to be liked by everyone. However, he can easily breakdown and close himself up. Therefore, sometimes wants to be alone and likes it this way. He doesn't play any instruments, however music plays an important part in his life. He is great at keeping relationships steady and has many friends. Ariel builds up a strong friendship with Amias, but doesn't quite know how to deal with it, when it takes a different turn.
“ Amias is the film, he has written the film, he is the eyes of the film”
Its a short psychologic drama that will concentrate on the present Amias.
The reality is what's happening now, it begins with Amias running, with intercutting memories. The first ones, the lake scenes are dreamy ones, we see two very similar scenes, however distinct because Amias is with a different person in each sequence. The fragments that we see slide on a parallel line, with the run. The next flashbacks are very sensual ones. You see fingers gliding over a girls back, fingers over a mans back. Making sure we see clearly that it's two different men and the one man is with both. It's not sex, however very spheric images. It all starts very dreamy, very warm. The memories are diverting us on a clear path. However, the strong cuts between the present and the memories are almost violent for us, making us feel uncomfortable when it happens.
What is unclear is Amias running. Is he running away from something, someone, himself, we don't quite understand, does he know where he is going? We never see closeups of Amias's face, only fragments of him because he is broken inside. But why is he reduced to this state? The run happens in a forest, the wild, symbolizing his state of mind, the forest is almost a projection of his mind. There is daylight but its weak, it's like as if the memories are expressing in the forest, doing that through camera and body language, or maybe surrealistic or experimental stuff like melting in the reality elements of his memories. It looks like he's trying to avoid everything yet he makes sure to go near places that make him remember...Everything flashes very quickly through each other, the memories are flowing with the present with an excellent, intriguing continuity that almost make us believe something that is not actually happening at the present moment.
Until we get to the moment of silence. The cliff..symbolizing he can't run anymore, he has to face everything. Amias falls..backward, not forward. Hits his head. Black. Rewind to the two memories at the beginning. Now we see what Amias didn't show us previously, what he kept from us. So we pick up exactly from where we were left with the memories. The memories start to fade to cold, to a kind of conflict, a fight, we don't really get what's happening, but the situation has become totally diverse and uncomfortable. Now we understand why he is running, why he is in this state.
However, no matter what, in this lapse of time, meanwhile he is “unconscious” he sees that no matter how it ended with Nina and Ariel, he is “loved”.
Amias, talks about overcoming something that may seem so common, yet its so different and individual. The cliff has no real personal meaning, but everyone can interpret it in their own way. Sometimes hitting your head can be the best of things that can happen to you..!>.<!
Amias is a 5 page short film. Its a psychological, romantic, dramatic, thriller drama..In a way its both a very brutal and tender film, it lulls you into beautiful almost idyllic passages. However, it suddenly, elliptically slams you in another dimension, maybe a dimension that is real, but we as an audience prefer the other.
Amias is running through a forest, the frames are faster. Furthermore the woods, tall trees, that surround Amias or simply he passes by, all work in favour of making it look like an extremely fast and breathtaking edit by intercutting the sequence. All this is emphasised of course by the precise, linear and building sound and music that matches perfectly with the structural composition of Amias's way of running. Moreover, from the way Amias runs we manage to get a feeling that he is running from something or someone or himself. In addition, it works perfectly with the colours of the surroundings as it captures the light from the “external”, putting him even more in attention, whilst he is moving in a dark area. The cinematography is hard, brittle and abrupt. The forest is cold and gloomy. He is wearing a hoodie and a pair of shorts. Amias comes up to a lake, you see it in the background,the water is still, the colours are blue and cold, the whole scene makes us feel uncomfortable and uninvited. The depth of field is strong and a telephoto lens will enhance that. At one point Amias and the background seem all squashed together. Moreover, we have an intercutting between scenes with wider aperture and scenes with less wider apertures.
In the lake scenes frames are slower, the image is slightly overexposed and we have less depth of field. The scenes are lit with 18K and 12K PARs. Making it look like hot summer sunlight. Moreover, we could let light go four to five stops over-exposed. Furthermore, filtrations behind the lens made from a black silk stocking contribute to softening the look a bit. The lighting is a perfect match of daylight, thus meaning a combination of sunlight and skylight together with artificial lighting. The light is both hard directional and soft directional at the same time. It has shadows that are strong and diffused at the same time. The peculiar thing about the scene however, is that there is always a very imposing backlight behind our two characters, rather than providing only direct lighting, which the key and fill light give. The purpose of the backlight is purely for modelling Amias and Nina/Ariel, it provides this idyllic definition and subtle highlights around there outlines. This also helps to separate them from the background and give a three-dimensional look. Moreover, It highlights their edges so incredibly well, that it creates a kind of rim or halo around the head and especially the hair while at the same time separating them from the background. As a result it tends to make them look more angelic or ethereal. This continuous glowing feeling to both of them, contributes to a dreamy feeling. The faces are lit with a 4K and another lamp bounced off of foam core through silks, so skin tones are natural looking and the audience can see the light in the character’s eyes. The skin tones are beautifully lit, almost melting with the surroundings.
HOW WILL IT BE DONE:
The film will be shot in Belgium. Why Belgium? My producer Kate Maveau and DP Quinten Prinsen live there as possibly all the rest of my team. Plus we made some calculations and the price to rent out equipment would be actually cheaper, oh and British Sterling is totally kicking Euro's ass. The actual filming will take place on the last week of March 2013, meanwhile auditions will be in Mid February. Moreover, since this year for some strange reason they decided they're going to move the clocks backwards on the 31st of March 2013 instead of the 24th, we are going to make our own time! All the crew is going to move their clocks backwards 1 hour for the days required, this will give us additional daylight for shooting. The Forest and Lake shots will be possibly shot in Zoniënwoud or Hallerbos Forest instead for the lake Donkmeer, Cliff shot will be possibly Fondry des Chiens (Ardennes), meanwhile indoor shots possibly Brussels or Gent. I am planning to shoot on the best possible camera we can get our hands on with your help. We are currently deciding between RED and ARRI camera systems. This film is a huge stepping-stone for me as a filmmaker. It gives me the chance to make my first real film, and share this amazing story and this amazing film!
Risks and challenges
Money: The biggest challenge is going to be raising the money to make this film in a short amount of time. It is an ambitious project and the amount I'm raising here is only a portion. However, a very large one of what the film will cost, so there is a chance I will run out of money. In that case, I will take out a loan or borrow the money from a personal investor. Either way, we will get this film made, because we have to. Help support this film and spread the word about AMIAS.
Weather: Since we are shooting at the end of March in Belgium and a lot of the filming takes place outside, the weather might be a big obstacle. We need at least one completely sunny day! Hopefully “Jesus Christ” will help us on that!
Crew: Actors getting sick...but if this happens we will face it with onwards and upwards faces, push the shoot a week forward until the actors have sufficiently dosed up on enough vitamin C to last them a lifetime. Creating a film and putting the right team together is the toughest of things. Everyone has to be in tune to play a masterpiece. The biggest challenge is making sure that every single person that is on my team plays the same tune as me!
