My name is Claudio and I am a digital sculptor and artist. I am creating a line of collectible mini-bust sculptures depicting characters from fantasy as well as my own interpretations from history.
These busts range in size from 3” - 4” in height and are suitable for display on a small desktop area or shelf. They are made using state of the art 3D printed steel technology and you can see in the video below the actual 3D printing process:
Each bust is painstakingly sculpted in Zbrush, a 3D sculpting application, very much like a traditional sculpture in clay. As you can see from the video most sculptures start off simply as a lump of digital clay!
At this stage I have sculpted the initial 4 characters in the series and have personally funded the prototyping and 3D printing in bronzed stainless steel of the first character: “The Viking”.
I have 3 more busts that are ready to be 3D printed in metal and brought to market. In order to be able to bring these pieces to market and ready for sale I have to print a “proof” in order to ensure that the product meets or exceeds the high quality expectations I’m looking for.
3D printing is a wonderful technology and, as you can imagine, rather expensive - especially when we are talking about 3D printing in steel.
Each bust can cost an estimated $200 - $300 hundred dollars (or more) to print at the 4” scale.
Through this Kickstarter I am hoping to raise funds in order to help alleviate some of the costs associated with 3D printing the initial product sample in order to bring them to market.
As a reward after pledge tiers 1 & 2 I am offering an actual 3D printed bust of "The Viking" in durable white nylon laser sintered plastic printed in different sizes according to the reward tier.
This material can be handled well and has good tensile strength. It has a surface with a slight grainy texture that presents a good level of detail and a bit of translucency.
It is a very nice material to display.
Each pledge is for a different size bust ranging from 3" - 6" in height. The larger the 3D print the more costly it is to make which explains the different pledge donation tiers.
LIMITED EDITION METAL BUST REWARD
The last tier pledge is for a very limited edition of the bust 3D printed at 4" tall in beautiful bronze infused stainless steel. This material is very cool to say the least and presents itself as a true art piece.
I printed a small 3" version for myself and it is one of the coolest things I have ever printed. It has a wonderful expressive surface and weight and It is by far my favorite material! Being stainless steel, it is resistant to corrosion and will last literally forever (well beyond our lifetime in any case).
It presents a great family heirloom to pass down to your children and grandchildren.
The edition is strictly limited to only 10 pieces worldwide. No more will be made in metal at this scale - ever.
Risks and challenges
This project has very little risk as the bust has already been created and has been 3D printed already successfully in both white durable nylon plastic and bronzed stainless steel.
The company behind the manufacturing process is Shapeways in N.Y.: a very reliable 3D printing provider that ships out more than 1,500 3D printed products per month. They are handling the actual 3D printing and I would be shipping them out to you.
I have been working with Shapeways for many years and have never had and problems with their service. They are accustomed to high volume orders. Worst case scenario is unforeseen delays, but this is not expected due to the level of expertise behind the Shapeways team.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
