About our project:
When Xavier Reyes returns to his childhood neighborhood of South Central LA, he sees that the local schools are still suffering from a lack of quality and equality. He witnesses children going to school without textbooks, qualified teachers or the minimum in personal safety. He realizes that something’s gotta give.
Earlier in his career, Xavier developed a program called Charter Launch that guided parents, teachers and community members in their attempt to start their own stand-alone charter school. He sees the gap in equality of education as enormous and he decides to be the change he wants to see. He puts his program to work in his own back yard and ventures to open a stand-alone charter school right in the middle of South Central LA.
Stand Alone Crazy follows Xavier as he sacrifices nearly everything and endures the trials and tribulations of bureaucratic red tape, extreme budget cuts and run ins with Southern California Edison. He overcomes hurdle after unexpected hurdle and he runs out of money and resources again and again. He finally reaches a tipping point when he’s left with only $10 to his name. Could this be his dream’s end? Stand Alone Crazy is the story of Academia Moderna, the small stand-alone charter school he endeavors to start in Walnut Park, Ca.
Stand Alone Crazy is also an exploration of a grass roots community movement that is changing the face of our embattled educational system. There are currently over 5,000 charter schools across America. Academia Moderna is one stand-alone charter school that, against all odds, successfully opened its doors to students who would otherwise fall through the cracks.
We are currently in the final phases of postproduction of a powerful one-hour documentary. We will use all Kickstarter funds to take the film from fine cut to a finished film. Specifically, funds will go towards a sound mix, music composition, color correction and mastering. Your contribution is greatly appreciated. We hope this film will inspire others to be the change they want to see in their own community.
