Dawnthorn! There is another Hazelnut Game, And Backers get it for Free!

Dawnthorn is announced! But what is it?

Dawnthorn is a standalone prequel to Hazelnut Bastille, set in the same universe as Hazelnut, but in an 8bit character! It is almost like the game that would have come before Hazelnut, during the NES generation!

Dawnthorn is built in the same engine as Hazelnut, and features many of the same enemies and items, but as totally different 8bit versions! It also features a lot of content completely unique to itself, and an entirely different overworld and dungeon list! The overworld will be overbrimming with secrets to find!

The story focuses on the adventures of the hero who wieled the eponymous sword before the events of Hazelnut, a hero everyone remembers but no one can quite name...

Dawnthorn is projected to be a full length game at around 12-15 hours to complete, and is likely going to be available Spring of 2019! It should come to Windows / Mac / Linux to start, and possibly the Switch and PS4 if it does well enough at initial release!

Best of all, Backers of Hazelnut will get Dawnthorn as a digital copy for no extra cost, if they have backed at 5 USD or more! This also includes the 50 USD tier!

 .

But Why is Dawnthorn?

  • Dawnthorn is a project that we worked on during our down hours working on Hazelnut, in secret
  • It is built in the same engine, and it is a way for us to stress test this engine for a full release, but in a project that requires less work to prepare; this will allow us to make the Hazelnut Release as smooth as possible later!
  • We will have the experience of releasing Dawnthorn to Steam, so we will be veterans at it for Hazelnut's release!
  • Any bugs or engine issues or input issues we catch during the Dawnthorn release can be fixed in the Hazelnut engine so they are already accounted for
  • The project may make a bit of money, which will further help us make Hazelnut as good as it can be, which means everyone wins!
  • The NES is COOL
  • Dawnthorn was the project that Hazelnut was originally conceived to be, before it grew to be what it is today! Going back and making Dawnthorn as it was meant to be became a fun side project!

We can't wait to bring you more info on this imminent release soon, and we are happy to make it available to our incredible Hazelnut Supporters! Think of it as our "Thank you" gift!

Both games look amazing, and I look forward to streaming this when it comes out. Now I saw that it is coming to switch and ps4 if it does well, but can this free to backers version also be able be for the systems, or is the free version going to only be for steam? Hope development goes well!

I'm both exited for you guys as a development company and for the game! You guys seem to very genuine and I hope the game does well for you all. I look forward to playing it when it releases! Thanks for all of your hard work!

    3. Jose R. R. Ruiz on

I love it. To me the game looks more like a GBC game, which I love. Question? Can I choose to wait to get the game free on Switch or just for Mac for me?

    4. Caleb Hughes on

This definitely looks like a cool extra. I'm also hoping for a Switch release as I'm not a PC gamer. Kindof a random thing to say about Dawnthorn that I am loving already though, it bears a lot of resemblance to Link's Awakening and the Oracle games to me, and those are easily my favorite Legend of Zelda games after Link to the Past, so this extra is a very cool extra on top of an already awesome looking game. I'm curious though, was that similarity in Dawnthorn intentional or just how this worked out?

    5. Zack Averyt on

Looks cool, but I'm not terribly pleased with the non-committal stance on a Switch release. I don't have a PC to play this on, and I backed the main game specifically for the Switch version. So please, release on Switch if at all possible, and make that my freebie.

Double posting because it looks like my comment got drowned lol, just really curious:
"Sound's interesting, looking forward to checking it out. As Hazelnut takes one of its big inspirations from Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, does that mean Dawnthorn will take its big inspiration from the original Legend of Zelda since its going NES/8Bit?"

Thanks Aloft Studio's guys! This is for sure a great gift we are all surprised of! :-D :-D
So DT will be realeased for Backers who has pledged >5$ as prequel before HB on Spring 2019.
Do you plan to insert some new Stretch goals related to DT before that date?

    8. Aloft Studio Creator on

"Would being on the two copy tier ($40) get me two copies of DT?"

I like how you think, but every person backing at 5 USD or more gets exactly one copy of DT, for the platform of their choice. Switch will likely be a bit longer in arriving, and is dependent on the game being well-received on PC, since it is costly to do.

"Sorry to rain on your parade but shouldn't you focus on delivering Hazelnut Bastille on Switch and PC instead of starting side projects?"

Yeah I knew someone would ask that.

-Dawnthorn is only 10% as big a project, but it provides us with crucial data that helps future HB planning
-it isn't being started, it is nearly 60% done now; we did the work in off hours when HB couldn't progress due to waiting on certain assets to be complete
-It helps us prepare for the HB releases; knowing what to expect in the full release after having done it before, for the cheapest effort possible will be helpful
-Since it is the same engine, all testing for DT immediately helps us for HB
-Content tested in DT may transfer over well to HB
-It isn't really a sideproject, so much as part of the same project, where we do a lot of the work necessary to prepare HB, but it somehow also makes a game as a result.

I do like the idea of it being bundled with the limited edition. I also think it may be a good candidate to be put into an NES cart. Though that could mean a lot of work.

What if you did another quick Kickstarter campaign (shorter duration and smaller funding goal) that would insure Switch release? It would be optional for all of us who backed HB and, for those of us that are really excited, we can throw more money at you to make sure it comes to the Switch. Because, I'll be honest, I have zero interest in playing it on PC so I probably won't play it if it doesn't.

    15. Aloft Studio Creator on

Ok lots of comments, lol. Let me respond to the things that came up over and over:
-DT should come out for Steam PC first, and if it is well received, we will try to take it to the Switch right after.
-If you want to play it on the Switch intead of PC, you will be able to waitlist for Switch, and in the event the Switch version of DT doesn't happen, you will still get a PC copy
-We are thinking of bundling DT onto the same disc with the HB Limited Edition! Not set in stone yet, but definitely on the table!

This is really good news!! Honestly tho, I just want the Switch version and hopefully, we will get one sooner rather than later.

    20. Lucas Smith on

It would be really sweet if it was hidden in Hazelnut when it comes out.
(the only reason I suggest this is that I would like a physical version of it and that seems like the only way you could get one is by piggybacking onto Hazelnuts physical release)

This is awesome! Kinda like Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon. I just hope it won't take anything away from the main meal, which is Hazelnut. I really don't want that Mighty number 9 story to repeat, where they announced a whole bunch of things at the same time and didn't polish any of them by the release date.
On another note, any chance this will be included in the physical release of Hazelnut Bastille? Please? =^_^=
