I'm Ilene Winn-Lederer, Pittsburgh-based illustrator and writer, posting this Kickstarter campaign on behalf of The Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators, the second largest illustration society in the US. As a founding member, I am excited to announce the upcoming launch of our 20th Anniversary Exhibition, The Art Of Facts: Uncovering Pittsburgh Stories. This juried array of original artworks and fine art prints by forty of our members will be on display from July, 2017 through January, 2018 at Pittsburgh's Senator John Heinz History Center located in Pittsburgh's famed Strip District.
PSI began in 1997 with informal monthly gatherings of professional local illustrators and fine artists who wanted to become illustrators. And wow, have we grown! As a nonprofit 501.3c organization, PSI now offers workshops, scholarships, and exhibition opportunities throughout the year for our members. All of our exhibitions are open to the community, providing social interaction and insights into what we do as illustrators and how we bring ideas to life.
Our free, informational monthly newsletter via our web site at http://www.pittsburghillustrators.org/ highlights PSI’s activities and showcases members’ current work projects. We host well-known guest lecturers from across the country as they present their expertise in our trade. We welcome illustrators young and old, offering regular portfolio evaluations and career advice.
We are very excited about this exhibit and look forward to sharing it with you!
The Senator John Heinz History Center is Pittsburgh's premier showplace for cultural events, art exhibits, dioramas and artifacts reflecting its long history and that of Western Pennsylvania. The Heinz is an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. Annual attendance at the museum attracts over 100,000 visitors. The Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators 10th Anniversary exhibit, Pittsburgh RECAST was held there in 2007 and attracted over 200,000 visitors, adults and children alike.
Art Of Facts | Uncovering Pittsburgh Stories is a word play on artifacts. PSI created this exhibition in response to two intriguing challenges: to showcase our profession as we celebrate our 20th anniversary and to deliver a creative solution to the History Center’s mission to communicate the historical significance of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania to visitors from near and far.
Art of Facts | Uncovering Pittsburgh Stories is a complex exhibit that has taken more than two years for us to plan and implement. By knitting together art and design with journalism and narrative writing, we have created a body of work that visually documents the factual and anecdotal histories of Pittsburgh and our region. It is a groundbreaking educational opportunity for all of our visitors - especially for young people seeing the exhibition on school field trips.
Although the time requirements and expenses involved are quite considerable, we are a 501.C3 non-profit organization and must depend on private and corporate funding to make it happen. While the History Center has been very supportive towards our efforts, we have mounted this Kickstarter campaign to fund just one component of the show: a high-quality catalog to accompany the exhibit for our patrons and visitors.
With your generosity, we will create a 120-page full-color publication that will be a keepsake. It will encompass all of the artworks in this unique exhibition while providing detailed descriptions and information about each of the illustrators.
We are offering you choices from a slate of rewards for your contributions to our campaign. These gifts are listed within eight tiers ranging from $5.00 to $5,000 and can be seen in the column at the right side of this campaign page. All contributions are greatly appreciated and are tax-deductible!
The funds raised for this project will cover these expenses:
1. U.S copyright © registration and ISBN number (Library of Congress registration)
2. Book design and production set-up
3. Printing, Binding, Promotion and Distribution (for Museum visitors and campaign contributors)
Here are some examples of promotions that we have produced for past exhibitions and events:
A selection of artworks that will be featured in Art Of Facts | Uncovering Pittsburgh Stories may be seen in the slideshow above.
Thank you so much for taking the time to learn about The Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators and our very special exhibition today! We look forward to working with you to make The Art Of Facts: Uncovering Pittsburgh Stories an intriguing and memorable experience that will resonate for many years to come!
