I’m making my first lullaby album and I’m so excited to invite you to join me in this creative adventure!
Who are you?
I’m Laurie Berkner. I’m a singer/songwriter and I write and perform music for you - kids and parents! Sometimes I play solo and sometimes I play with my amazing band. We’ve been featured on children’s TV networks and have many fun CDs and DVDs out already because I have been lucky enough to do this for a number of years now. But I couldn’t have done it without your support and your love of the music. You inspire me by letting me know how much my songs have had an impact on your lives and you share my music so I can continue to make more!
Why are you making a lullaby album?
Because you asked me for it! I’ve had requests to write a lullaby album for years, but it never felt like the right time. Now that has changed for me both professionally and (especially) personally. Since my own daughter was born I’ve had a chance to sing lullabies to her every night. I rediscovered how special and intimate that time just before bed is, and experienced the strong connection and feeling of safety that songs can create as our children fall asleep.
What’s the album going to be like?
I’m so excited about this album! I'll be recording some traditional lullabies that I remember from my childhood, a few of my earlier songs that I've re-worked specifically for this album, and new lullabies that I’m busy writing right now! Some of the songs will feature only me and some will have the band playing and singing as well. I've also noticed that some of the songs seem more like something a parent might sing to a child, and others seem like songs that children might sing to themselves or along with their parents. I wonder which songs you'll find yourself singing?
Why am I producing the album through Kickstarter?
I know how excited I feel when I have a chance to be a part of something I care about from the beginning. I'm hoping you feel the same way and would like to share in this process with me! Kickstarter seems like a perfect way to do that.
Also, over the past couple of years I’ve noticed how helpful Kickstarter has become in the music world - especially in the indie music world - to involve fans in what we are doing as artists. For a smaller operation like me (I’m my own record label), and because I want to keep in close contact with the families who listen to my music, Kickstarter provides a great structure for me to start a conversation about the album while I’m writing and funding it!
I also think it will be fun to be able to offer personalized products and experiences to fans who may not be able to see me in concert. Kickstarter makes it really easy to do that - and it’s much more exciting to offer these things along with writing an album!
Where does all that money go?
It all goes into making the album. It goes to musicians, the recording studio, the engineers, mixing, mastering and making the packaging art.
And if we are lucky enough to get more contributions than we need, we’ll use that extra money to make music videos to go along with all the great lullabies. I would love to take these songs and make them into something your kids can see!
What’s in it for me?
This is one of the best parts! I’m so excited about all the fun things that I will be able to offer you. The band will be joining in on some of the great rewards too! There will be personalized signed CDs that go out before the general public gets the album, opportunities to contribute to the CD artwork, opportunities to sing on the album, private mini concerts, Skype sessions and so much more! And if you don’t see something in the rewards column that you wish were there, let us know! We’ll be adding new rewards throughout the campaign and we’re always interested in hearing what you want.
I’m also going to have a weekly Video Journal where you can see all that goes into producing the album. I’ll share songs I’m working on, take you into the studio during rehearsals and recording sessions, give you a sneak peek at how the artwork is coming along and much more. You’ll be with me through the entire process.
When do we get the lullaby album?
The download of the album will be available by the end of 2013. We will be shipping advance copies of the the physical CD in April, 2014, two weeks before it is available in stores. (The months between recording and shipping leave time for us to print and manufacture the CDs.) Whichever form you decide to get your copy of the album in, you will definitely be receiving it before the general public!
I’m so excited about this album and about sharing it with you from beginning to end!
Risks and challenges
While it is always possible that we may face unexpected obstacles in making this album, I am happy to say that I'm very confident in myself and my team and expect to be able to tackle whatever comes our way. I have been doing this for many years and my small, but very capable team has already helped me produce several successful albums (as well as other much larger projects).
Also, communication and transparency with my fans has always been one of the most important things to me. The biggest potential problem I can think of would be If something were to extend the length of time it takes to produce or release this album. In the very unlikely event of this happening, our fans would absolutely be the first to know. And using the many resources I have developed over the years, we would of course do everything in our power to solve that or any other problem that comes up.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
I would LOVE to hear from you. If you have a question about anything please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org or send me a message right here through the Kickstarter page.
Of course! One family needs to be the purchaser of the reward, but if one or more families want to go in on a private visit or such that is fine. Just make sure that the total number of kids at the visit/reward doesn't exceed the maximum. But sharing in a reward is a great way to lower the cost and let a few families share in the fun!
If you have more than one child in your family, but only purchase one CD reward, YES, I'd love to sign the CD to all of your children. At the end of the campaign my office will send out an email asking for information needed to fill your reward. When asked how I should sign the CD just include all the names.
My office will be contacting all of our backers via email to get any information we will need in order to fill your rewards. This might be your mailing address, child's name, etc. If you purchased a visit you'll be contacted so we can start working out the logistics.
All the information to fulfill your reward will be gathered after the campaign is over. The Kickstarter platform is not really set up to receive that information, probably because it's only necessary to do so if the project reaches its funding goal. When the campaign is over it's up to the creator (in this case, me) to take care of working out the details and fulfilling all the rewards.
YES! The best way we have found for a backer to choose more than one reward is to sign up separately for each reward. Just use another email address (some people have used their spouse's address or a work email), pledge the amount necessary to receive the second (or third etc) reward that you want, and choose it.
I've posted the Video Journals here on the Kickstarter page as updates. Just click on "Updates" at the top of our page. Remember, because the Video Journals are only for backers, YOU MUST BE LOGGED IN TO ACCESS THEM.
Yes! I will keep posting weekly Video Journals until I'm done recording the album. After that, when there will be less to report on, they will become less frequent. Even though the campaign is over, the Video Journals will continue be posted here on the Kickstarter page - as the page will stay up indefinitely.
