The exciting moments of mountain climbers, snowboarders, weekend warriors, and many more deserve to be captured by aerial photography. Most of drones on the market require comprehensive skills in piloting and filming, which is very hard to master for most people. Some products intended to use GPS technology to achieve auto following, but due to GPS inherent errors, it may not work as expected.
With many years of experience in mobile computing, camera sensor, and image processing, we are able to create an easy-to-use, intelligent drone that everybody can operate easily. We do not want the remote controller to bother you when you are in action, we want to totally free your hands, and let you focus on your fun and enjoy the moments.
When we are developing our ideas and building the prototype, we realize that our work will have great potential to influence the drone technology and open up a new chapter in aerial filming. The computer vision technology and android platform adopted in our design will change the way how people operate the drone and take aerial shots.
Mind4 is surprisingly easy to operate. You can control it by using a Mind4 app on your smart phone by simply connecting your smartphone to Mind4 through wifi.
1. Take off and hover
Open app on either iPhone or Android phone, just tap a button and Mind4 will automatically take off and hover. You will see live FPV (First Person View) video on your smartphone screen.
2. Find the subject of Interest
Use pinch or pan gesture on touch screen to adjust Mind4’s position until you or the subject of interest is in the frame of view.
3. Lock subject to follow
- Press “Autolock” button, Mind4 can automatically identify you in view to follow.
- Or manually frame the subject in view by using pan gesture to drag out a frame around the object, such as a person, your pet or wild animal.
4. Start to follow and film
Press “start” button, Mind4 will start to follow you or any object identified while keeping the best angle and distance automatically. Your hands are totally free from now on, Mind4 will do the aerial shots and record every movement you desire.
What’s more exciting, you can combine Mind4’s auto-follow feature with body gesture. You are the remote controller, Mind4 can fully understand and follow your specific command.
- Waving your right hand will tell the drone to come closer.
- Raising both hands will tell it to shoot a picture.
- Pointing to the ground will bring it to land.
You can redefine the meaning of these gestures, or customize your own gestures in Mind4 app.

The Mind4 has a built-in HD camera, acting as the ‘eye’, which is used to recognize and track subjects of interest. To do aerial shots, you can mount either GoPro, or any other camera on Mind4’s gimbal system as the filming camera.
Some drone products use GPS to do auto following, but it has some obvious disadvantages: 1) You have to carry a smart phone or a GPS signal device when you are in action, which is almost impossible in some sports such as swimming. 2) You might lose your drone when the GPS signal is weak. 3) GPS Inherent error could be up to 20 meters, so the drone’s camera may point to a wrong place, which might make you completely out of the frame!
We use a totally different way to design Mind4. Using cutting edge computer vision technology, Mind4 can recognize, track, and follow you or any other subjects of interest autonomously and accurately, always keeping the object centered in the frame of view. No smartphone or GPS devices are required once Mind4 starts following, and no more worries to lose the GPS signal. The drone can always recognize and follow you through its camera.
We want to make Mind4 not only a drone, but a much bigger open platform, with which you can extend its capability. That is why we run Android in Mind4.

So with Android platform, you can search among market apps to find out what most fits you out, or you can even create or customize an app all by yourself. Mind4 comes with a generic auto follow app that can be used in most popular scenarios, and also includes 6 customized stock apps to meet various needs.
Of course, you can always download apps from the market, or even develop your own app to meet your specific needs.
In the heart of Mind4 is our innovative flight engine - the VAPS (vision augmented piloting system) core, which uses computer vision technology to make auto follow easy, accurate, and fun.
The VAPS core is a tiny, low power, but super powerful computing module. Our team’s state-of-art hardware design encapsulate a quad core ARM mobile
CPU, runs up to 2 GHz each, and 2 GB DDR3 memory into this tiny module. This ensures Mind4 has enough computing power for sophisticated target recognition and tracking.
Mind4 has a built-in HD camera with zoom lens, acting as the “eye” of the drone. With the live image feeds from camera, the VAPS core continuously identify and tracking moving object precisely and control the drone to keep in the right position.
Mind4 can accept a filming camera like Gopro or any other camera with HDMI or USB output. These cameras can work in parallel with the built-in camera. Simply mount Gopro and connect the cable, your autonomous filming drone is good to go.

Fail safe: spare flight control system automatically takes over in case the main Android system fails.

Auto mode: when you are in action, you can use this mode to let Mind4 track and follow you or any other subjects automatically using its eye. Mind4 can recognize your body gesture and receive commands.
Manual mode: if you want to enjoy the flight you can use manual mode to control it just as any other drone.

Mind4 is a very comprehensive mechanical and electronic system which combines mobile computing, computer vision and flight control technology together. We are dreaming to bring this state of the art hardware into as many people’s hands as possible, at a very affordable price, so that everyone can enjoy the benefit from the technology revolution.
During the past 2 years we have put great efforts into the implementation of this idea. We have built working prototype that demonstrates the idea is working, including engineering sample of VAPS core module, the camera system, Android platform, and relative software system. Our algorithms can recognize and track subjects successfully and the drone can follow people or other subjects quite well.
However, in order to bring such high end, cutting edge processor and components into an acceptable price range, we need a price breaker in volume. The same thing applies for high speed and high density PCB (printed circuit board) manufacturing and other parts too, we also need to make injection mold of the drone body. $100,000 will make all this happen.

We are a group of engineers and we are all big fans of UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). Most of us worked in world’s top companies such as Ericsson, IBM, Lucent, Cisco, and etc. We have many years of experiences in designing and manufacturing high performance mobile devices, camera sensor and image processing technologies. Among us there are Ph.D researchers who are responsible for designing the core parts of Mind4.
Combining the cutting edge technologies from the above listed areas, we believe that we can bring drone technology to a revolutionary level, while still keeping the drone affordable to most of you.
Risks and challenges
We have put a lot of efforts to design and deliver this great product, and try our best to minimize the risks, which are basically the common ones that you could find in any ambitious state-of-arts projects.
Supply of mobile processors may have impact on what kind of IC will be finally used in Mind4 production. However, we guarantee that whatever IC we use, the processing power will be at same level and will not impact the performance of Mind4 software.
Mind4 will be shipped to you with six stock apps in lead time. The software engineers of our team can develop more customized apps if given more time. We will keep developing and adding more apps into the Brain market.
