ABOUT THE SHOW
Sunken Treasure is an 8-episode web series that will bring the dive life of the beautiful Florida Keys to the small screen. Here we find the remains of the 1733 Spanish Treasure fleet, the only live coral barrier reef in the continental United States, and numerous modern shipwrecks purposely sunk as artificial reefs. Though hard to find, some treasure of the gold and silver variety still lies on the ocean floor, however, the sunken treasure we seek is the entire underwater world. As the cast of Sunken Treasure searches for real gold, they come to realize that these elements, and more, are the true treasure to be found while scuba diving.
Scuba diving is an amazing sport with rewards at every turn. Being underwater is the closest thing to experiencing outer space. There is a sense of weightlessness as a diver glides effortlessly through the water, rising and falling with a slight change in breath control. Viewing sea life is like discovering an alien life form from a planet in a galaxy far, far away. Drifting along a shipwreck is like traveling back in time as history is revealed before your eyes. As the cast of Sunken Treasure searches for real gold, they come to realize that these elements, and more, are the true treasure to be found while scuba diving.
From Sands Key to Key West, Sunken Treasure will take the viewer on an incredible journey, exploring amazing dive sites, learning from local experts, and relaxing with the Conchs - those men and women who have spent their lifetime living in the Keys, with more stories and knowledge about the islands than one could imagine.
Sunken Treasure is part documentary, part travel show, part reality, part drama - in essence we are setting out to tell a story in an experiential, accurate, and entertaining way - enjoyable by diver and non-diver alike. Along the way we will share with viewers how to plan their own dive adventure to the Keys without breaking the bank. Our ultimate goal with this series is to spark viewers to action, whether that be as an experienced diver who hasn't been in the water for awhile, or someone who has never had the pleasure of experiencing the dive life.
In November 2014, producer Mike Johnson attended the DEMA Show in Las Vegas. The annual tradeshow brings together the biggest and best names in the dive industry. Here we were able to make some amazing contacts that solidified the idea into a show. Now we are working hard on preproduction - research, location scouting, and networking in the Keys.
We are scheduled to move into production for 10 days in June, then immediately into post production. The first episode of Sunken Treasure will be released August 2, 2015 to multiple online video platforms including Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo, Amazon Instant Video, and more.
Traveling from Sands Key to Key West, we will stop at well known and yet to be discovered dive sites. The Florida Public Archeological Society and the NOAA National Marine Sanctuaries have both agreed to aid in providing information on dive sites of historical and aesthetic qualities, along with providing a local expert to appear in the series for quality discussions with the cast of the show. Between dives we will meet with local Conchs to hear real life stories of pirates, treasure hunts, and what true island life is all about.
In order to make that a real possibility, we are asking for YOUR help! Pulling off a quality production is not easy or cheap. Underwater camera equipment is expensive, and dive gear adds up. So for the love of diving, please take a moment to look through our reward options and help out how you can. Every little bit counts!
Here's an overview of our production budget. This accounts for a 3 man crew and 2 cast members.
Travel - $2,000
Lodging - $4,500
Food - $4,000
Dive Insurance - $800
Scuba Rental Gear - $2,000

Risks and challenges
What would life be without a few risks and several challenges to get in the way? If there is anything life has taught us, its how to roll with the punches. Here's how this applies specifically to Sunken Treasure.
Diving has inherent risks - running out of air, equipment malfunctions, decompression illness, and a laundry list more. However, modern dive "rules" have been carefully considered by globally recognized organizations such as PADI, NAUI, and SSI. Every detail of every dive for this series will be conducted conservatively within these guidelines. This almost nearly eliminates these risks altogether. Dive insurance will cover any accident, ensuring that all cast and crew members make it home safe and sound.
Water, especially salt water, does not mix with electronics. The very ground level of this project involves mixing the two. For this reason we will be using the new GoPro Hero 4 Black camera for all dive scenes. The quality is amazing, yet its cheap enough that it won't break the bank if a housing floods. Several cameras will be kept on standby in case a housing does flood. This will prevent production from coming to a screeching halt. Topside, the series will be shot on a Canon 5D Mark III, a proven workhorse in the unforgiving conditions of nature. All gear will be stored and transported in Pelican cases which protects everything from damage in almost every way imaginable.
Weather is another hazard of working on the water. The day could start out as calm as can be, then without notice open up to a violent storm. High winds, storms, and rough seas all could put an end to production. That is why our schedule is flexible and why we are planning for 10 days.
At the end of the day, the two of us are dedicated to making the project happen! Together our military, global production, and dive experiences have taught us to to think on our feet and never give up!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
