Help us bring the first two story arcs of The End to print in a glorious full colour 208 page graphic novel!
You are all AMAZING. First stretch goal down, and so here's a new, awesome one!
The End is a story about two aliens who come to Earth looking to save its inhabitants from impending doom and wind up off course in the one place that no one could possibly take them seriously--a fan convention! As a result, eight humans quickly find themselves on an adventure that spans galaxies. Will they ever see Earth again? What happened to the Mother Ship, Exodus? Who are these weird aliens who look exactly like humans but with psychic powers? And most importantly, who will feed Victor’s cat while they’re gone?
The End is a colourful, lengthy Sci-Fi adventure that often pokes fun at common tropes in both geek fandom and science fiction movies and books, but tries to maintain a slightly more serious atmosphere. It has been running for nearly three years, and we’re just now getting into the meat of the story.
Volume One will be comprised of chapters One through Ten, as well as Henri’s Origin Story, totaling 196 pages of comics and several pages of extra sketches and bonus art. The earlier chapters have been remastered so that textures, word balloons, fonts and sound effects are up to par with that of the current pages. The End updates twice a week currently, though we’re looking to up that amount to three times a week by the end of 2013, though that may happen far sooner than the end of the year. It can be read online for free here, and if you like you can start from the very beginning.
Randi Brown came up with the original concept for The End and currently illustrates it. She spends her days being a full-time mother in Ontario, Canada. The rest of her free time, and also hours in where she should be sleeping, is spent working on this comic.
Cory Brown took over the writing and world building aspects of The End at the beginning of Chapter 2. His main jobs are making characters sound believable and taking ideas I have, fleshing them out and making them work on paper.
We work very well together in a way that can only be described as through relentless dedication to making each other redo everything ever. We have the entirety of The End planned out, and are hellbent on seeing it through.
We're raising the money to print Volume One of The End. It's a 208-page sewn-perfect softcover book that contains chapters 1-10 as well as a 10 page sidestory about Henri’s origins and several pages filled with extra art and sketches, totaling 208 pages. The goal amount of $3000 will cover the print job for 500 books, shipping, and Amazon/Kickstarter fees. Any extra will be used to purchase a larger run of books, as well as some super secret stretch goals that will only be revealed if and when we get to that point.
So let's get down to what you REALLY want to see, the rewards!
The wallpaper in this tier will be modeled off of the art created for the book's cover. I'm trying to decide between about three cover ideas currently, and will be making a decision over the next week. It will be full colour and large enough that it will scale down to any desktop size. You will receive it as a zip in both widescreen and fullscreen aspect ratios.
The PDF won't be at print quality, but it will be at a higher resolution than the pages were originally posted on the web. It will also contain Henri's side story and any other extras the book will contain. You will receive it and the wallpaper at roughly the same time.
There was a request for a higher tier digital package, and I took a few days to think about what I'd like to add to it. Here's what it will include:
- The higher quality PSD and wallpaper from the $10 digital package.
- A colourful wallpaper of each chapter cover in the book, totaling 11.
- A fancy digital only wallpaper made specifically for this tier.
- A desktop icon set (I am still working on this, but it will be in a style that is meant to look like various Fiah technology and include icons for drives, folders, some common file types, recycle bins and other essentials, and some extras of character's faces, just for fun).
- A set of nice quality avatars featuring some of our best art from various pages, posters and other random art I've done that can be used for pretty much any personal use you want.
- A custom Ethma shimeji that I slaved away on about a year and a half ago. A shimeji is a simple desktop buddy, but with attitude! Tiny Ethma will wander around your task bar, climb the sides of your screen, clone herself, jump around, hang off windows and generally look grumpy at you. I completely forgot that I had made her, and she's been sitting in a folder on my computer for over a year doing nothing. Ethma is compatible with Mac OS and also everything up to Windows 8 (which I am currently running), and requires the latest version of Java to run (it will prompt you when you run her if you need to update).
A large portion of the book has recently been redone with print in mind. If you've read the archives for the first time recently, you won't notice, but we've already put a lot of time into making sure that fonts, word balloons and textures match up with the quality of more recent pages, as well as actually rewriting some of the original pages for a better reading experience. You can see the difference here:
I wanted to focus on Henri, Cassi, Endi and Ethma for this first book since they are the characters you get to know the most.
The back of the bookmark will feature Endi and Ethma again, minus their 'human' disguises, and I'll be adding a picture of it as soon as it is complete! For now, here's the front:
Here is a preview of the charms, now in colour! They should be on black acrylic in full printed colour. They feature Endi, Ethma, Henri and Cassi, who were the main focus of Book One!
This one is pretty straight forward! I'll be adding in a sketch of a character of your choice into your book! We will contact you once funding is complete to find out which character you want.
The sketch will be roughly this quality and I may or may not use more than one colour of sketch pen:
They won't look as contrast-y as these in real life--markers are a difficult beast to scan or take pictures of. If you'd like some samples of other pictures I have coloured in markers, you can see them at the bottom of this tutorial I made.
They will each be on a 9" x 6" 140lb piece of coldpress. We will contact you once funding is complete to find out which character you want.
I will be drawing you a full-body design of yourself as either a citizen of the Ith monoculture, or as a member of the ESI. It will be in the style I use for the comic, and I will deliver to you a high resolution image of yourself that you can use for all manner of things, like tumblr icons or facebook profile photos. The results will look much like these samples here:
We will take the design we made for you and put it in the comic! Will you be working the fungus laden fields of Ith as a member of the Green Caste? Or downing coffee and inventing new tech for the ESI in their R&D department? If you donate for this tier, we;ll have you in a panel or three, depending on what the story calls for. We'll also let you know when it happens so you can brag to all of your friends that you're in a comic, and they aren't (unless they are. That would be embarrassing...)!
We'll take your awesome design and make it into a beautiful coloured one-of-a-kind piece of artwork, complete with a full background and a bit of backstory from Cory about what your role in the monoculture or at ESI's headquarters is! You one of a kind illustration will be on a sturdy piece of 9" x 6" 140lb coldpress and coloured using copic markers.
If you're willing to go all out for us, I'm willing to go all out for you! You will get everything at the $500 tier, and we will work with you to create an original acrylic painting, subject matter up to you (within reason), mailed to you.
I'll paint and ship you a one-of-a-kind acrylic painting of whatever you want (when I say in reason, I am excluding hardcore porn, gore and also photorealism). Size is something we'll talk about once the campaign is funded; I'm fine with big, but I would like the chances of it being damaged in shipping at a minimum. As shipping is going to vary wildly depending on size, I'm not going to charge you shipping at all--you're basically the most awesome person in the universe and I would feel weird about asking for shipping if you've just handed me a giant pile of money.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
I can't currently think of any risks involved with this project--The Hiveworks can handle any unforseen extra expenses we encounter. It will mostly be a matter of getting everything shipped on time, and getting everything drawn and signed. There are plenty of ways to go about both, but the hard part will be making sure we keep to our timeline.
Yes! I forgot to mention that. I've never owned a Mac so sometimes its like I'm not even aware of them. But yes. There will be two versions of the package available for download when the kickstarter is over.
